Thanks for the beautifully-presented results, Rufus. Really pleasurable to look through them and see what landed where.

I think the Haneke is a very fitting poll-topper. Glad to see the Lanthimos in the Top 10 as well.
That's all, folks!

Thanks Rufus.
Very surprised that the Basterds didn't get Nr. 1.
Although interesting that one of the oscar-nominated films, the golden bear winner and the golden lion winner not made the list.

Thanks for the great job as usual Rufus. Was I the only voter for Black Dynamite? Sure looks like it. Y'all need to drink some more of that fine Anaconda Malt Liquor and think about your votes real hard...

Anyway, pleased that the Farhadi did so well, and in particular that QT's abomination didn't top the poll. Lots of catching up for me to do for this year - 5 in the top 20 unseen, most of the rest.

Haven't seen Das Weisse Band, A Serious Man, A Prophet, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Kynodontas, Antichrist, The Secret in their Eyes, Bad Lieutenant and Amer out of top 20.

Didn't vote for Inglourious Basterds, so About Elly (which was my number one) is the highest i voted for. I also voted for Enter The Void, Fish Tank, Mary and Max, District 9 and Castaway on the Moon that made it into the top 20.

I bought Das Weisse Band two weeks ago because it was mostly for free since I mainly wanted to buy Color out of Space & Parasite and out of the ones available, The White Ribbon was the most interesting to add for free (3 for 2). So i certainly intent to give it a watch (and actually every movie inside the top 20.)

Nice to see the top 2 aligning with my ballot. Kind of surprised/disappointed about the relatively low finish for Les herbes folles - Wild Grass though, notwithstanding its relatively strong rankings on TSPDT this poll reinforces my impression that it's a hidden gem. My experience with post-1980 Resnais is fairly limited (3 films) but very positive. Definitely want to check out more of his later stuff.

Thanks for the hard yards on the presentation Rufus!

I've seen the top 45 films on the poll, not something I can usually say on one of these lol. Highest unseen is yet another Woody Allen film about an old guy in a relationship with a youngster. I'll punish it down in the not too distant.

Spare a thought for me in your hearts, my two lowest rated films of the year are in numbers 1 and 2. I regard them as duking it out to see which can be most crass, although to be fair I haven't built up the fortitude to see The Human Centipede yet. We get to #12 before I find a film to be enjoyable and #20 till a favourite pops up. Has ever a set of results left a greater feeling of loneliness?

I will try and watch all the films in the results although Insomnius' number one is probably permanetly unobtainable.

No Jennifer's Body?? :mw_confused:

Just watched it today myself, and it would have landed on my list had I seen it before deadline. Just seems like the kind of subversive cult film that could at least garner at least a few votes... but oh well...

When I watched Jennifer's Body, most people agreed it was crap, although maybe with an ironic/fun edge to it. All of a sudden, during the last few years, it's deemed cult and a brilliant satire (with Megan Fox, really?). I am almost curious to reconsider my rating, but .. nah, that rewatch has a 0,5% probability to happen. Culters gonna cult.

Subversive and cult isn't really how ICM forum works :P There's 101 films in the tabulation, most of which I've seen, the only 2 that fit that billing are Amer and Final Flesh. Both well out of contention.

Hm. I'd reckon some would call Valhalla Rising, Mr. Nobody, Symbol, Trash Humpers, maybe The Limits of Control cult films to a certain degree. Enter the Void is probably both.

95 Eccentricities of a Blonde-Haired Girl / Singularidades de uma Rapariga Loura Manoel de Oliveira 16.5 3 4 1,707 :imdb:
interestingly this won my poll back in 2014. Seems to be pretty much forgotten now.
In my experience, de Oliveira's films don't come available too often. I've seen two of his: I'm Going Home (2001) on MUBI years ago, and The Strange Case of Angelica in a 2010s critic poll retrospective last year. I'm aware of many other films he directed, including Eccentricities of a Blonde-Haired Girl, and am definitely interested in seeing more but would need someone to point me in the right direction.

It made my HMs ... I think someone voted for it. I was pleasantly surprised - the reviews were not encouraging.

Thanks for hosting, Rufus!

Really exciting to see The White Ribbon come out on top, I had not expected it. Do we have a previous version to compare this list to? Would be very interesting to see.

All of a sudden, during the last few years, it's deemed cult and a brilliant satire (with Megan Fox, really?). I am almost curious to reconsider my rating, but .. nah, that rewatch has a 0,5% probability to happen. Culters gonna cult.
Probably because it's some kind of horror version of Promising Young Woman that appeals to letterboxd because of it's theme i guess. It kind of got popular or cult since letterboxd culture arose, like when the tumblr kind of people found their way to it. Haven't seen it tho (yet).

I think some scenes from that movies with Megan Fox are often in memes, esp. on sites dominated by women i have noticed.

I feel like Jennifer's Body has been a cult film ever since a few months after its release actually, though I never felt compelled to watch it.

I liked it. It was #14 on my list for this poll. The marketing team promoting it did a TERRIBLE job, which I think I led to the poor reviews. I didn't watch it until a few years ago, long past its cultural impact, and I thought it was a cool subversion of some common horror elements. Oddly feminist messaging, too, which I appreciated.

I've also found his films difficult to track down, at least searching in common U.S. sources for films. For what I think is considered a fairly major director, it is surprising. I will say "Eccentricities..." is available on Prime video for me, with a "MUBI subscription". Same is true for "...Angelica". Criterion Channel has a couple of his now, which I think are recent additions: "Francisca" and "Porto of My Childhood". Kanopy only has the former.

Thanks for flagging all of this. I also have access to Francisca on both Kanopy and Criterion, with Porto of My Childhood also on the latter. MUBI in Canada has Visit, or Memories and Confessions. No luck on Prime though.

Yes you were the only voter, I made my own spreadsheet given my interest in the year. zzzorf voted for 9, but this was Shane Acker's animation.

Nine, was a commercial disaster, and received extremely poor reviews and rates from both the public and the critics, were you expecting ICM Forum to buck the trend?

I am trying to see every single film from every ballot in the poll so I will watch it at some point.

As matthewscott8 pointed out, you were the only one voted for Nine.

Interestingly, I saved the ballots from the 2009 CFB year-end poll hosted by zetes, but for some reason I didn't saved the official result. I think I did the performance tabulation for that year. zetes apparently didn't save the results from 2009 and 2010 in the thread that listed the result of the year-end poll. If I have some chance this month, I'll tabulate it based on the scoring back then and add it to the OP. Just by looking at the ballots, Nine appeared in 5 ballots if I counted correctly. You and another poster voted #1. Many did vote for Penelope Cruz for her performance.

Personally, the movie didn't do it for me. I wasn't a fan of 8 1/2 to start with, so it didn't help. Other than a few exceptions, this century has been very lean on musicals.

Cheers Rufus - Yes I was aware it was no crowdpleaser but was surprised I was a lone voice - I thought I recalled it was a bit more liked by imdb1 posters.

I rewatched at weekend too late for the recent poll and would have demoted it a bit more -t was ~3 in my recent ballot. Nice art/set direction, period detail, game cast... but only one real belter among the songs.

The phrase I was responding to was "subversive cult films", Trash Humpers does indeed fit that billing, I missed it on my scan of the list. My own definition of cult, excludes widely well received movies, if everyone is into it, it's a religion not a cult, that takes out Mr Nobody, Symbol and Enter the Void (high IMDb ratings). Limits of Control and Valhalla Rising were not well received by audiences, but also don't have crazed followings. I try and be empirical about this as possible. If you want to see what a cult film looks like, go take a look at the IMDb vote spread. If a film is poorly rated but has a big spike at 10/10, that's a cult film. Also, except for Trash Humpers it's hard to think of these movies as subversive. Korine's film was so subversive he couldn't even find any old people to cast for it and had to put young people in old person masks.

NWR is about as cult as you can get... Recently had to deal with another person hating on NWR because he's using synth tracks over & over again... I've told him it is to compensate for the 99% of other filmmakers making acoustic scores nowadays, and the use of strings when people are sad. I really don't get why electronic scores are so controversial... (or even something else that feels new), there are so many good choices. The only criticism that is valid is that all electronic soundtracks today are somehow synthwave tracks. Filmmakers never heard of ethereal wave, glitch, IDM, shoegaze, drum&bass. They're so rarely used. Music choices in movies are extremely controversial and predictable. And than we're going to criticize the ones who at some point innovated it, i don't get it. "every post-Drive movie is the same" is the same they say... Like there were only 3 movies, how many filmmakers have unofficial trilogies. Secondly, you haven't watched them if you say such thing. Completely different. Otherwise, i'd like all three of them equaly, which is absolutely not the case. Now i only 100% love The Neon Demon and so far TOTDY which i'm currently watching.

I'm frightened that at some point what he does will not work... But in TOTDY i started to realize that everything he does, simply works.
