iCM Forum's Favorite Movies of the 1980s
2nd Edition

Nominations
Image

The 1980s; the decade many of us were born. It was the decade of the end of the Cold War and rise of laissez-faire capitalism, glasnost and perestroika, Reagan and Thatcher, Michael Jackson and Madonna, greed and coke, MTV and Ninja Turtles, AIDS and Live Aid, Nintendo and IBM, the mullet and shoulder pads, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Tiananmen Square protests. Plus many more wars, elections, coups, crises, trends, disasters, deaths, births, sport matches, inventions, etc. Which can't all be mentioned in this very brief recap, that isn't meant as a comprehensive nuanced history lesson on the 1980s, but as an OP to chose our favorite movies from the 1980s (again).

Last edition:
:ICM: Top 250
:imdb: Top 250

Results thread Nominations Thread

DEADLINE = 3 NOVEMBER 2021
  • Nominees must be from 1980 - 1989 according to imdb. Which means the year in brackets next to the title, not the release-date in your country. IIMBb will be leading in this, but with good argumentation exceptions can be made
  • IMDb- or iCM-lists are accepted. (If you can't make one of those, ask another user to help you out.)
  • Lists can be any length.
  • Shorts, mini-series and TV-episodes from anthology series where the episodes are unrelated, are allowed. Tv-series aren't allowed.*
*A mini-series is 16 episodes or less, not multiple seasons, and not planned to be longer but canceled, and is intended as a single unified work and not episodic.
  • Each nominee can only be named once (of course)
  • Lists can be ranked or unranked or partially-ranked. In a partially-ranked list, the top X films are ranked and everything after that point is unranked. When not specified I will consider a list as ranked.
List length last time was 250 and half-life 50, which it will be again unless there is good reason to deviate from it.

Some help:
1980s movies you rated on imdb
1980s movies on a imdb list (replace X with the list id)
Participants (27)
Please check if your list is stated, ordered and linked correctly. And is set to public. For iCM lists you can also set it to "Friends" and befriend me. Don't edit your post, but make a new post or at least notify me of the edit in a new post.

For once, I'll post my list early: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls061676979/ (fully ranked)

It hasn't been updated since the last poll 5 years ago, so there will be many changes when I update it later this month.

Great number 1 film! I'll be adding it (high) on my list. I think we can get it in the Top 250 this time.

We’ll see if it shows up in 500<400, otherwise I don’t have too much faith 😅

No real surprises or remarkable contributions I'm afraid.

I'll maybe fiddle with it depending on what 80s movies I see between now and 3 November

Good intro! Perhaps Chernobyl, Gorbachev and Boris Becker deserve a mention too. Here's my updated list:

With the prowess of having only 5 American movies in the list, two of them being by the outcast Stanley Kubrick...

A modest list, few surprises i think, but all of them are massive favs. But i haven't seen much from the eighties though. All ranked.

The 80's were my 20's and a time when I not only made a deep dive into the history of cinema, but also made a fair number of short films with a friend who was a graduate film student.

In the past, I have had a relatively poor opinion of the films made during the 80's (compared to the 70's and 90's), but that is in part because many of the more interesting ones were not available to watch at the time they were made, and I am still catching up on what I missed (mostly foreign indie films that seeded the best of the 90's).

I made this list awhile ago, and may add 20 films (to reach 100), but I am also happy with it as it is despite what is missing: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls500728412/

Did you intentionally vote for the Beetlejuice cartoon, or did you mean to pick the film?

Thanks, I fixed it. I didn't notice that the movie Beetlejuice didn't come up under that title, but under Beetle Juice.

I'm gonna be an early bird here as well, I made a lot of effort on the 80s this year, but won't have time to again before the poll closes, as I'm concentrating on the 2009 poll. I put a big wriggle on to make sure I had 10 films from each year of the 80s that I ranked "excellent", and all 100 of these are ranked "excellent", my top rating.

List is ranked, 1st top to 100th bottom
