I always feel like this is a film I should love more. I saw it when it was new in the cinema, and remember thinking it was really, really gorgeously shot - and Dorota Segda is really, really gorgeous also - but that was about it. Watched it again 10-15 years ago and my opinion was unchanged, but it seems to have gained a bit of a reputation over the years and I wonder if there was something I was missing both times I saw it. But then I wasn't too crazy about the other two films from Enyedi I've seen either, though to be fair those were both in poor-quality rips. I think around the time this came out, there were a lot of films from Eastern Europe, particularly Hungary, showing up and playing in cinemas in Chicago, and for whatever reason this didn't measure up. I wish that [urhttps://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/hol+volt+hol+nem+volt/]A Hungarian Fairy Tale from about the same period were better known (though I should give it another viewing also). At least Béla Tarr has managed to find a foothold in the film culture.
First experience at a retrospective of 90s films and I was, on the contrary, astonished, both visually and thematically!
But, yeah, considering that I admire, though eternally attached to On Body and Soul, it's possible she was a one-hit-wonder (but what a wonder with that Century, at least in my eyes, heh :woot: ) / I'll eventually watch 1-2 more from her (plus, I think Hungary -maybe not in terms of filmmakers' popularity, beyond Tarr's- has been more or less present in the cinematic, non-mainstream field - remember Taxidermia's appeal? at least where I live, it had a cult run both in cinemas and dvds tehe )
Apart from the explosion of interesting cinema from Eastern Europe in the 1960's that led to many filmmakers escaping to and working in the U.S., the entire region has been given scant attention by cinephiles (except for the fairly recent Romanian wave, and a few standout filmmakers like Tarr and Kieslowski), even after emerging from the Iron Curtain.

Why is it that when the "NO IMAGES IN QUOTES" rule is fiercely violated for half a page it's always you three guys? :P

I don't know about others, but I do it cuz I'm a rebel.

But seriously, I forget about it because the images don't work for me and like someone else mentioned, I'm not going to take chances with changing my settings. I'm too stupid to do it safely.

There have not been much interest in all the great directors from Nepal, they are like 1000x better than Yoshida & Costa combined! But nobody cares? It is a shame that cineastes won't broaden their horizons. All it takes is to travel to Nepal and attend their clandestine theatrical screenings, in order to appreciate their visionary 5D film-making. :folded:

Then you're part of the problem, not of the solution.

.. this seems like one of the more known ones: Loot (2012). Then look at the "recommended" titles below, they're mostly pure-Nepalese productions (and not made by Australians or Brits and all that).

Exactly.

Also. When you think about it, a film should be viewed on a glacier surface. The great masters from Nepal understands this. Yet all these supposed great directors in this thread uses a screen? How stupid. :folded:

Clearly we need to make 2022 our official Year of Nepal here at the icm forum, and I'd also suggest that we disallow any voters in next year's 500<400 poll who submit lists with less than 50% Nepalese cinema. I personally vow to only watch Nepalese films in the cinema over the next year, even though the nearest place showing such features is several hours' yak ride away.

Ah, damn, I honestly thought this would make the top 2 cut and break the boring duo.
Alas, maybe Shura will dethrone them.

A magnificent farewell, as it stands, for Red Angel, Masumura is a master craftsman on taboo topics, expertly transcending the dynamics (and pathos) of gender roles right in the heart of war machine.
Wakao is one of the most astounding performers this planet has ever given birth to.

I personally vow to only watch Nepalese films in the cinema over the next year, even though the nearest place showing such features is several hours' yak ride away.
Never seen such flagrant yakphobia on ICM before.

Honestly though, I adore both of them (Carriage a bit more, because Oguri has even better stuff in his sleeves), the same way I was also impressed by (but didn't love) Sundays and Cybele, but seeing only two-three films dominating the first spot for years in a row...it does get kind of boring, no?

cinewest wrote: October 12th, 2021, 5:35 pm Apart from the explosion of interesting cinema from Eastern Europe in the 1960's that led to many filmmakers escaping to and working in the U.S., the entire region has been given scant attention by cinephiles (except for the fairly recent Romanian wave, and a few standout filmmakers like Tarr and Kieslowski), even after emerging from the Iron Curtain.
Just to clarify, you mean former East-Bloc Europe, correct?

Very few of the key filmmakers escaped to the US. The only one I can think of is Forman. Jasny ended in Germany. A few others ended in exile, including Tarkovsky - though that was later. Most of the others stayed, and either disappeared from the limelight, kept working as before or scaled down before returnibg with comebacks in the 80s. We did see a clampdown on artistic forced in the late 60s with repercussions lasting over the 70s - though you can still find many notable films from this period - including Tarkovsky in his prime.

I don't think there is much of a debate that emerging from the iron curtain was generally a negative for cinema - at least from a cinephile perspective. The way the state studios pushed money into talent, even with their restrictions, lead to an onslaught of greatness it would be very hard to see today - Romania being the key exception - though there is still some interesting stuff coming out of Russia - and there are plenty of films from the ex-Eastern Bloc countries that make it onto the festival circuit, but nowhere near the counter in Latin America. LatAm is showing a lot of promise right now, Argentina in particular developing a really robust mainstream and arthouse cinema with international success and exposure. The Argentinian New Wave clearly had an impact here as well.

10. 1150 points
8. 1250
7. 1330
5. 1450
4. 1550

Ever breaking up the Top 10 would be so tough if they weren't sorted out by the 400-check-threshold (quite a few are SO close to it).

Just to be clear, there is no such rule - though as Peaceful mention above, it is "good practice" unless we are discuss the visuals.

I was always inclined to repeat the images in every post myself, to add exposure, but the argument re: loading time is solid, so I will be more careful in the future myself. (although it is very frustrating, if only all could have good Internet connections)

It seems a decent few top 10 films are likely to actually cross 400 votes by next year, with As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty, Przesluchanie, Red Angel and Muddy River essentially being guaranteed to leave the list. Even Carriage to Vienna is at 358 checks and getting closer to "graduating". It really feels incredible how these small, ignored films were discovered and slowly built into the forum Canon - even if the effects are small elsewhere.

I sort of like/am indifferent to that Forum Canon denomination, though, yes, agreed on all fronts regarding exposure for many of those films.
My main issue (as always  ) is the lack of suspense on the first 5 spots, or, at the very least, when it comes to who's who in first and second position for an insane amount of years. While I respect the idea of a few selective films highlighted more properly, seeing very few changes in "crucial" spots doesn't make it that interesting, excluding the ICM site members' factor of rarely caring to explore them / kind of shocking, to be honest, that even after several number 1s for both Muddy River and Carriage to Vienna, they still haven't managed to "graduate", like you said! It's not like they're top 200 or 400, they're 1 and 2 :circle:

(which is why I'm curious in seeing every top 500 list -its first 10 spots in particular- ever since the beginning of this poll / even willing, as I mentioned, to "scorn" my own would-have-been choices :D )
