Year by Year Polls: 1967

#1

Post by gromit82 »

Welcome to the Year by Year Poll!

This poll is for the year 1967.

These polls are fairly simple. We work our way through film history selecting a different year each time, and you list your top films from the given year. Depending on the number of voters, the poll usually produces a list of around 50-90 films and is a great way of finding recommendations. You can also list other films outside your top 20 as honorable mentions or runners-up.

The Rules

- You can vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 films.

- Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies, and TV mini-series are all eligible, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

- We use IMDb dates for consistency, so a title should be listed on IMDb as 1967 (unless a specific film has been otherwise declared eligible).

- Your ballot can be either ranked or unranked, but for ranked ballots, your list must be numbered. Partially ranked lists (where a certain number at the top are ranked, and the rest are unranked) are allowed. Please make sure that what you mean to do with your list is clear.

- IMPORTANT: Along with a list of the titles from 1967, please include the corresponding list of bare IMDb urls for the same films. Your ballot cannot be counted if the IMDb urls are not included. (And if you list only the URLs but not the films' titles, you'll significantly reduce your fellow voters' enjoyment of this poll, so please make sure to include both titles and URLs.)

- Please note, you must post your URL list yourself rather than having someone else do that for you.

The Scoring

For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive a number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each succeeding title receiving one fewer point. So the top title on a list of 20 films will receive 20 points, the next 19 points, and so on. If the list has only 10 films, the top title will receive 10 points, the next one 9, and so on. If there are 5 films on the list, the top film will receive 5 points, the next one 4, etc. You get the idea.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot if it had been ranked. If there are 20 films on the ballot, this means each one would receive 10.5 points.

When we conducted the 1966 poll last year, I observed that El Dorado was changed by IMDb from a 1967 film to a 1966 film during the voting period and received no votes in that poll, and I recommended that it be eligible the next time we polled 1967. So I am declaring it eligible for this poll.

Sergey Bondarchuk's Voyna i mir / War and Peace is not eligible in this poll. It's listed as a 1965 film by IMDb, and it placed 18th in our 1966 poll last year.

I'll include any other eligibility rulings in this post if needed.

On a separate note, Teproc has agreed to join Rufus-T and me in helping to conduct these polls. Thanks, Teproc! We will bring him into the rotation soon. However, we can always accept more volunteers; many hands make light work.

Incredible year indeed. Maybe the best ever for Russian cinema, Godard was at a peak, Japan was producing some unique new wave things... WoW
I want to rank Mouchette in this, but I need to rewatch it first... always a shoutout to Bresson though, even if he's a tough nut to crack for me!

Question for anyone: Any thoughts on why the 7 hour Voyna i Mir film is listed as a 1965 release, but parts III and IV are listed as 1967 releases? Should I vote for the 7 hour complete film, or just the last two parts on my list?

My personal opinion on this: IMDb has been mighty stupid and unclear with this entry to their database and I would just stick to two doubtlessly eligible titles - 1967 has plenty to offer!
Because chances are the votes are "wasted" as this might be viewed as a 1965 release to the rest of the community, even if it's technically not correct. (Did we have a poll for 1965 before?) Would you vote for it as your favorite film in an all-time poll - one entry - or would you give up 4 spots for each part? If not the latter, maybe they don't fit that good for a Top 20 here either.
I personally try to stay away from inconclusive cases. So many proper, easy features to pick from .. ;)

Sorry, but I would think that Sergey Bondarchuk's Voyna i mir / War and Peace should be ineligible for this poll altogether. When we polled 1966 last year, it was at the time listed as a 1966 film by IMDb, and it placed 18th in our poll.

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5197

I might reconsider if there is significant objection in favor of making War and Peace eligible, but otherwise I would say that neither the complete film nor any of its parts should be eligible this time around.

I appreciate the input Torgo and gromit. I’ll leave parts III and IV off my list—I would only have an interest in voting for the complete film. Glad to know it made the list once already in the 1966 poll :)

The Year by Year Polls haven't done 1965 since we moved to ICM Forum. Our predecessor poll on the IMDb Classic Film board, then run by OldAle1, covered 1965 in a 2015 poll.

ICM
September Challenge: ImageImage
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

2 BONNIE AND CLYDE
3 YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE
4 COOL HAND LUKE
5 HURRY SUNDOWN
6 THE GRADUATE
7 POOR COW
8 BELLE DE JOUR
9 THE PRODUCERS
10 TWO FOR THE ROAD
11 IN COLD BLOOD
12 THE DIRTY DOZEN
13 ACCIDENT
14 WAIT UNTIL DARK
15 THE WHISPERERS
16 BAREFOOT IN THE PARK
17 THE ROAD TO CORINTHE
18 THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE
19 TONY ROME
20 HOUSE OF A THOUSAND DOLLS

DELIBERATELY EXCLUDED - THE JUNGLE BOOK - a) not seen in full for some 53 years and b) because DIsney were beastly to Scarlett

will add URLS later

HMs - REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE: HOMBRE; TO SIR WITH LOVE; IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT; GAMES; YOU;RE A BIG BOY NOW; WELCOME TO HARD TIMES; LE SAMOURAI, THE INCIDENT; HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING; POINT BLANK; DUTCHMAN; WEEKEND; and THE TORTURE CHAMBER OF DR SADISM

PREDICTIONS?

I;m guessing BONNIE & CLYDE or THE GRADUATE, with LUKE, the Bunuel & Melville doing well.

OBSCURITIES

Image
Preminger's much derided Deep South Melo - I think it was included in a Medved Bros GOLDEN TURKEY AWARDS book or somesuch. I saw it circa 1973 on UK TV debut and loved it - my Sunday Times Movies on TV book being the only critics to like the movie! - - Strong cast, great Hugo Montenegro score, Preminger in command of widescreen, one of Fonda's best... I suspect the liberal use of the N word is a problem for some... but the old imdb discussion board was riddled with posters from rhe area that said people did - and do - express the attitudes of Burgess Meredith here.

Image

Early Ken Loach - maybe his first in color, from Nell Dunn book about blue collar Dolly Bird getting involved with another man whilst her hubbie banged up. Donovan soundtrack makes it an irresistible slice of 67.

Image If you thought THE FATHER was the last cinematic word on dementia and ageing think again... Edith Evans won BAFTA and Oscar Nom,.... so not really that obscure... but not on any other lists :ermm:

Image

Jolly White Slave Melo with Vincent Price and Martha Hyer running a magic act in a Tangier tourist trap as a front for kidnapping nubile young women to populate the local bordello. There are, at best, twenty "dolls", but one of them is Maria VENUS IN FURS Rohm herself (Aka Mrs Harry Alan Towers). Has had Australian DVD release in different edit to the one that got US Video release - former is longer but latter has the irresistible theme tune from Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers.

STINKER OF THE YEAR - I can't think of a film I enjoyed less than WOMAN TIMES SEVEN

I;m guessing BONNIE & CLYDE or THHE GRASUATE, with LUKE, the Bunuel & Melville doing well.
 @ b)

As of now, Le Samourai has twice as many votes (!) as The Graduate - bigger advantage than I thought. But enough votes are yet to be cast ..
It could well be that for the 60s & 70s, the highly established names of European cinema - of whom some fall into the arthouse category - have an easier time to win points against the American dominance than for contemporary polls. In our forum, I mean.
