Year by Year Polls: 1978 (CLOSED)

Welcome to the Year by Year Poll!

This poll is for the year 1978.

These polls are fairly simple. We work our way through film history selecting a different year each time, and you list your top films from the given year. Depending on the number of voters, the poll usually produces a list of around 50-90 films and is a great way of finding recommendations. You can also list other films outside your top 20 as honorable mentions or runners-up.

The Rules

- You can vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 films.

- Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies, and TV mini-series are all eligible, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

- We use IMDb dates for consistency, so a title should be listed on IMDb as 1978.

- Your ballot can be either ranked or unranked, but for ranked ballots, your list must be numbered. Partially ranked lists (where a certain number at the top are ranked, and the rest are unranked) are allowed. Please make sure that what you mean to do with your list is clear.

- IMPORTANT: Along with a list of the titles from 1978, please include the corresponding list of bare IMDb urls for the same films. Your ballot cannot be counted if the IMDb urls are not included. (And if you list only the URLs but not the films' titles, you'll significantly reduce your fellow voters' enjoyment of this poll, so please make sure to include both titles and URLs.)

The Scoring

For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive a number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each succeeding title receiving one fewer point. So the top title on a list of 20 films will receive 20 points, the next 19 points, and so on. If the list has only 10 films, the top title will receive 10 points, the next one 9, and so on. If there are 5 films on the list, the top film will receive 5 points, the next one 4, etc. You get the idea.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot if it had been ranked. If there are 20 films on the ballot, this means each one would receive 10.5 points.

In the forum header the deadline for this poll ends on Jun 22nd. I think that's a typo...
I have one or two to see (hopefully) and then I'll post my list.

Meh, I don't think it's going to do that well - I'm not sure I've read anything really positive about Bakshi or that film over my time here. It certainly won't be on my list - it's probably in the bottom quarter of my viewings for the year. Alas at least two other films that I'm not at all fond of are going to do quite well, one of them at least will be top 10, probably top 5 - and it's on your list

All I can say is thank Azathoth for the horror films this year which may help to keep the mainstream films I dislike from dominating too much.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Hmm, another pretty strong year (especially for horror flicks), looking through all my ratings. I'll come back with a list after a few specific re-watches and the like. Hopefully most of our participants here make time for the cartoon rabbit movie, which will almost certainly top my own list :P

Who needs Bergman, Malick and Ruiz when you can have a film as devastating as this?

Predictions. The Malick i guess but reckon MIDNIGHT EXPRESS was a crowdpleaser- DEER HUNTER was the big prestige gong winner that year but don't get impression it is loved. Not seen The Bergman

Enjoying the unexpected love for GREASE Tell me more, tell me more! :D :whistling:

Obscurities:

FEDORA - no Billy Wilder film is really "obscure" but this one certainly needs some love.
Image

It has had great Dual Format Masters of Cinema release
https://platekompaniet.no/globalassets/ ... roductPage

TIME OUT says it far more eloquently than I can:

A shamefully underrated film, Fedora is Wilder's testament and one of the most sublime achievements of the '70s. Only superficially does it resemble Sunset Blvd., since time has moved on; appropriately, Fedora is about a star's disastrous attempt to make time stop, and a washed-up producer's efforts to cope with Hollywood's inexorable new generation. Atmospherically set on Corfu, it explores the basis of cinema: realism, illusion, romance and tragedy - in a word, emotion. It's not a flashy film, let alone a cynical one, and it has a narrative assurance beyond the grasp of most directors nowadays: finely acted, mysterious, witty, moving and magnificent.

I kind of think the movie's target audience is to be found among our band of posters here so if you have never caught it please give it a try - you'll get the jokes  ... a taste for the outre , a penchant for Hollywood on Hollywood and a fondness for wildly implausible plot might help. A dazzling Chinese box of a movie and a beautiful score.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW9cPHD1UmA Always the actress!
Another Wilder "waxwork" to treasure
Image
I think I may love FEDORA and her entourage now even more than these :D
Image

REMEMBER MY NAME Moody early Alan Rudolph with great role for Geraldine Chaplin and Alberta Hunter soundtrack. An Arthouse hit at time it seems sadly forgotten
Image

NEST OF VIPERS Sumptuous 1930s dark tale of class, lust, betrayal and murder against the backdrop of the rise of Fascism

Image

GRAY LADY DOWN tense crippled submarine flic got lost in the disaster movie shuffle
Image

THE DAIN CURSE - forgotten but rather stylish Dashiel Hammett adaptation with James Coburn the tec and Jean Simmons on hand.Image
