Year-by-Year Polls: 1950 (Nominations)

#1

Post by Rufus-T »

Welcome to the Year-by-Year Poll!

This poll is for the year 1950

These polls are fairly simple. We work our way through film history selecting a different year each time, and you list your top films from the given year. Depending on the number of voters, the poll usually produces a list of around 50-90 films and is a great way of finding recommendations. Lots of people will also list other films outside their top 20 as honorable mentions or runners-up.

The Rules

- You can vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 films.

- Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies, and TV mini-series are all eligible, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

- We use IMDb dates for consistency, so a title should be listed on IMDb as 1950.

- Your ballot can be either ranked or unranked, but I will assume it's ranked unless otherwise stated. For ranked ballots it makes it easier if you use a numbered list.

- IMPORTANT: Along with a list of the titles from 1950, please include the corresponding list of bare IMDb urls for the same films. Your ballot will be deemed disqualified if the IMDb urls are not included.

The Scoring

For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive a number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each succeeding title receiving one fewer point. So the top title on a list of 20 films will receive 20 points, the next 19 points and so on. If the list has only 10 films, the top title will receive 10 points, the next one 9, and so on. If there are 5 films on the list, the top film will receive 5 points, the next one 4, well you get the idea.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot if it had been ranked. If there are 20 films on the ballot, this means each one would receive 10.5 points.

Could we get a check on whether Variety Lights is eligible? Most sources list it as 1951 but some list it as 1950 but I can't quite find a proper citation for this.

June Challenge: Image
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Rufus-T is the one who will make the official ruling on this, but if it were up to me, Variety Lights would definitely be eligible for 1950. IMDb lists it in 1950, and when we polled 1951 last year, it didn't receive any votes, which implies to me that it probably wasn't listed as being from 1951 then either.

I'm not qualified enough for this and better wait for those 20xx polls. Just checked my 1950 ratings: a half of them are noirs. B)

Yes, the sources that I checked indicate it as a 1950 films. The film had its limited release December 1950 in Italy. It is listed as 1950 on IMDb. So, I would consider this film qualifies for this poll.

Fair enough - I just couldn't find any info on this "limited release". Thanks for the clarification!

Many noirs are great. You are still welcome to participate if you change your mind. You don't need to see a lots of film from the year. All you need is 5 films, or more.

1950 was the peak of the classic noir with over 30 studio-productions... so there will be no better year-by-year poll to give this genre some credit ;)

There are 64 films from the year on the TSP noir list - and that's by no means "complete"; I'd say the number of films that are often considered noir from the year is probably closer to 100, or even more when you count in all the foreign productions (particularly from the UK, France and Mexico). So even if half one's seen films from the year are noir, that could still be a pretty respectable number - as I think it is for me, with 56 noir out of about double that number of total features.

Reminder for me to do this. Just checked my ratings and I have nearly 50 films from this year rated 8/10 or higher on IMDB. Gonna have to work to narrow that down!

Yes, I do see some sources indicate 1949. The criteria we follow is the IMDb. If IMDb list the film as 1950, then the film would qualifies. So, "Begone Dull Care" is qualified for the poll for that alone. There are time when a film is not listed as 1950 but may be a 1950 film. In that case, one may request for consideration. Otherwise, we keep it simple by following IMDb listing.

Was gonna say the same thing... I think it was filmed in 1950 but only released in 1971/1979. So I'm not sure what the verdict is on that.

I think there are two versions... The better, shorter one with the looped "It Came in the Night" soundtrack was released later, but this one's pretty great too as I recall, and listed as 1950 on IMDb in any case. Don't remember what soundtrack was used though...

According to Wikipedia the only two versions were 1971 (16 min) and 1979 (7 min) - filmed in 1950 but only actually completed in 1971 for the first time then re-edited in 1979. So I'm not sure why it's listed as 1950 in IMDb (and also there's no actual listing when you go into the release dates section).
