Year by Year Polls: 1933 (Closed)

Post by gromit82 »

Welcome to the Year by Year Poll!

This poll is for the year 1933.

These polls are fairly simple. We work our way through film history selecting a different year each time, and you list your top films from the given year. Depending on the number of voters, the poll usually produces a list of around 50-90 films and is a great way of finding recommendations. You can also list other films outside your top 20 as honorable mentions or runners-up.

The Rules

- You can vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 films.

- Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies, and TV mini-series are all eligible, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

- We use IMDb dates for consistency, so a title should be listed on IMDb as 1933.

- Your ballot can be either ranked or unranked, but for ranked ballots, your list must be numbered. Partially ranked lists (where a certain number at the top are ranked, and the rest are unranked) are allowed. Please make sure that what you mean to do with your list is clear.

- IMPORTANT: Along with a list of the titles from 1933, please include the corresponding list of bare IMDb urls for the same films. Your ballot cannot be counted if the IMDb urls are not included. (And if you list only the URLs but not the films' titles, you'll significantly reduce your fellow voters' enjoyment of this poll, so please make sure to include both titles and URLs.)

The Scoring

For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive a number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each succeeding title receiving one fewer point. So the top title on a list of 20 films will receive 20 points, the next 19 points, and so on. If the list has only 10 films, the top title will receive 10 points, the next one 9, and so on. If there are 5 films on the list, the top film will receive 5 points, the next one 4, etc. You get the idea.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot if it had been ranked. If there are 20 films on the ballot, this means each one would receive 10.5 points.

May Challenge: Image
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

watchlist
I'll try to watch at least 6 more titles to get my ballot up to 20 before the deadline. I know for sure 'Glad Rags to Riches' with Shirley Temple isn't going to be among them; I'm undecided whether I'd rather do a non-stop no-sleep solo marathon of the entire 50 hours long m.c.u. (at least until the ward's staff wake me up and force me to go to some group therapy or something) or attempt to get past the first minute of that abomination. At least thanks to Pynchon's reference in 'Gravity's Rainbow' and my neurotic naging memory I can now soothe myself with the lyrics "Some day I'm going to fly / I'll be a pilot too!" Oh dear. Congrats Carmel, you failed and managed to embarrass yourself once again. Go back to watching dry paint.

1933 is a year I can't make even a decent top 5 for, so will skip this one. Due to me having seen too little, not because of the quality of the movies.

There are a whole lot of Japanese films from this year with several that I've seen list-worthy or close, and with more to see it'll be part of the Japanese challenge for me and I'd guess some others. Just a thought.

Hey, everybody. This is a reminder that there is one week left to vote in this poll. If you haven't included your list yet, or haven't included the URLs yet, please make sure to do so.

To repeat, unlike most of my other Year by Year Polls, this one will be closing on a Wednesday evening (U.S. time) -- May 12.

I could make a nice Top 10 (out of, um, 12?) which would consist of exactly the most popular and acclaimed films from that year and nothing else.
Yeah a contribution like this is worthless for a poll, let the experts do this.

I kind of treat these polls as challenges since I don't participate in the challenges. Use them as an excuse to catch up on films from that poll focus. Means I get more of a chance of bumping up my list.

I could make a nice Top 10 (out of, um, 12?) which would consist of exactly the most popular and acclaimed films from that year and nothing else.
Yeah a contribution like this is worthless for a poll, let the experts do this.
Should I withdraw my entry then? I'm only an amateur film enthusiast and admittedly only ranked movies that were popular or acclaimed enough for me to be aware of.

I apologize. I realized soon after doing that post how it sounded like a request. It was just a way to phrase my feelings about what I, myself, can contribute to such a poll. I just don't feel qualified for that.
Of course everybody is free to send in only 5, 7 or 10 titles, no matter how many you've seen.
