Interesting year. For me, it's the earliest for which I have 100+ viewings, and it also is tied with 1963 for having the highest average rating. Not so shabby. I think it probably doesn't get quite as much respect overall as 1934 (L'atalante, It Happened One Night) or 1939 (too many obvious titles), but any year with the Marx brothers, Laurel and Hardy, and the Fleischer brothers at or near their peak is hard to beat, and when you add all the great stuff from France and Japan, some great experimental work, musicals, and a big ape climbing the tallest building in the world, well, discussions of all-time best are silly.

1. Duck Soup (Groucho, Harpo, Chico, Zeppo, and Leo McCarey trying to keep up)
2. Lot in Sodom (James Sibley Watson/Melville Webber)
3. Velikiy uteshitel / The Great Consoler (Lev Kuleshov)
4. Snow-white (Dave Fleischer)
5. Hallelujah I'm a Bum (Lewis Milestone)
6. Sons of the Desert (William A. Seiter)
7. Zéro de conduite: Jeunes diables au collège / Zero for Conduct (Jean Vigo)
8. Baby Face (Alfred E. Green)
9. Betty Boop's Penthouse (Dave Fleischer)

10. Keisatsukan / Police (Tomu Uchida)
11. The Old Man of the Mountain (Dave Fleischer)
12. Kimi to wakarete / Apart from You (Mikio Naruse)
13. Tôkyô no onna / Woman of Tokyo (Yasujirô Ozu)
14. Footlight Parade (Lloyd Bacon)
15. Design for Living (Ernst Lubitsch)
16. Dekigokoro / Passing Fancy (Yasujirô Ozu)
17. Dancing Lady (Robert Z. Leonard)
18. Fétiche (Wladyslaw Starewicz)
19. Busy Bodies (Lloyd French)
20. The Invisible Man (James Whale)
url it
HM, many of which could easily replace any of the bottom 10 - it's that good a year

Berkeley Square
Dezertir
Dinner at Eight
Employees' Entrance
The Fatal Glass of Beer
42nd Street
Gabriel Over the White House
Gold Diggers of 1933
Hijôsen no onna
Las Hurdes
I Heard
Is My Palm Read
King Kong
Lady for a Day
Mother Goose Land
Mystery of the Wax Museum
Nakinureta haru no onna yo
Nieuwe gronden
Okraina
Parade of the Wooden Soldiers
Popeye the Sailor
Popular Melodies
Quatorze juillet
Taki no shiraito
Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse
La tête d'un homme
Twice Two
Wild Boys of the Road
Wild Elephinks
Yogoto no yume

Not as thrilled with Ekstase or Ganga bruta as many, I guess, though I did like them.

Should give a re-watch to some of these, particularly King Kong and Okraina

As yet unseen: Bombshell; Christopher Strong; Counsellor at Law; Daigaku no wakadanna; The Emperor Jones; Female; Going Hollywood; I'm No Angel; Koi no hana saku Izu no odoriko; Ladies They Talk About; Lady Killer; Man's Castle; La maternelle; L'or des mers; Picture Snatcher; Queen Christina; The Son of Kong; State Fair; Topaze; Turn Back the Clock; Xiao Wanyi and many others, some undoubtedly golden

Ah, sorry.

For some reason I thought it was the 12th today. Silly me. It was my birthday on the 11th, so I don't know how I blundered on this. Wasn't drunk or anything. Strange feeling to have...
That's all, folks!

Hi, everybody. I am dealing with an issue with the spreadsheet that calculates the results, so there may be a delay in posting the results. Most likely I will finish this weekend.
