Yes, that's it. He used to get shit for it on the more conservative-taste-oriented Classics Board on the IMDb - and it rarely helped his cause - but I think here it's considered a bit more acceptable to maybe not bother to choose Lebowski or SPR even if you like them more than some of your more obscure picks. Although given how much Angel has seen and the eclecticism of his taste, perhaps most of the establishment favorites most years aren't his anyway.

I do the same thing myself to some extent with some years - I'm sure others do as well. If I have a few films vying for placement I'm likely to pick something less well-known, and hope perhaps a few others are thinking the same way. It's not as if these polls or any of our polls have some earth-shattering importance and we all know about the most famous films for a given year, so why not maybe at least allow some slight chance that others might see something on your list or even the final list that they don't know about. It's about exploration much more than defining the "best" to me.

That said the obvious winner of this year will probably be on my list, because I just haven't seen that much that I'd really want to promote from this year, so unless I get cracking and see a lot of things in the next 10 days the Dude will make another appearance, takin' er easy for all us sinners.

Maybe you only think his taste is eclectic... how can you know when at the same time you say he has never honestly listed his favorites in these polls?

Possibly. But I don't think he picks films he dislikes. The point is more that I don't believe his taste is just a mirror of TSP or whatever is on the most official lists. I guess that's a low standard and by that way of thinking most of us have "eclectic" tastes. But I'm just blathering.

Well, the main reason for doing this is that I don't find any pleasure in voting for those (so well-liked) films. On the other hand, in years after 1960 I tend to appreciate very few of them so I kill two birds with one stone. :P

Hello and thank you for hosting, Rufus.

I'm going to go with a fully ranked list, as I have a strong and distinct affection for each one of my first 12 titles (in approximately the order presented here). Unfortunately - when it comes to the bigger films that crop up in the second half - the memories are not as fresh, as it's invariably been such a long time. Still, I've arranged them roughly in order... Oh, and I decided to leave out 'Saving Private Ryan' - as I could most certainly do with re-appraising that one.

1998:

01. Site Visit (1998, Maïa Cybelle Carpenter)
02. Silvercup (1998, Jim Jennings)
03. L'école de la chair (1998, Benoît Jacquot)
04. Hydromancy (1998, Gerda Johanna Cammaer) *no IMDb entry*
05. Talk of Angels (1998, Nick Hamm)

06. Yours (1998, Jeff Scher)
07. La petite mort (1998, Yves-Marie Mahé) *no IMDb entry*
08. The Mask of Zorro (1998, Martin Campbell)
09. La classe de neige (1998, Claude Miller)
10. Idea (1998, Miguel Coyula)

11. Sliding Doors (1998, Peter Howitt)
12. Terminus paradis (1998, Lucian Pintilie)
13. Savior (1998, Predrag Antonijević)
14. Lola rennt (1998, Tom Tykwer)
15. Ronin (1998, John Frankenheimer)

16. Out of Sight (1998, Steven Soderbergh)
17. Gods and Monsters (1998, Bill Condon)
18. Buffalo '66 (1998, Vincent Gallo)
19. Twilight (1998, Robert Benton)
20. Apt Pupil (1998, Bryan Singer)

*sigh* I meant to get to more stuff, and do a couple of re-watches here, but just haven't been able to do it. This is the weakest year from my strongest period of film viewing, with the lowest number of films seen for any year from 1982-2001 at 112. And the lowest number with a high rating (8+) for this period - and a lot of films that seem a little questionable (often because barely remembered). And a lot still to see though not so many that stand out as OMG I KNOW THIS WILL BE GREAT! Maybe it is just a bad year for me. Anyway this is what I have -

1. Inquietude (Manoel de Oliveira)
2. The Big Lebowski (sum guys from Minnesota)
3. Xiao Wu (Zhagnke Jia)
4. Alone. Life Wastes Andy Hardy (Martin Arnold)
5. Palwolui Keuriseumaseu (Jin-ho Hur)

6. Beloved (Jonathan Demme)
7. Wandafuru raifu (Hirokazu Koreeda)
8. Los amantes del Círculo Polar (Julio Medem)
9. Misulgwan yup dongmulwon (Jeong-hyang Lee)
10. Secret défense (Jacques Rivette)
11. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Terry Gilliam)
12. Sib (Samira Makhmalbaf)

13. More (Mark Osborne)
14. Zhao xiansheng (Yue Lü)
15. Hai shang hua (Hsiao-hsien Hou)
16. Fucking Åmål (Lukas Moodysson)
17. Gasman (Lynne Ramsay)
18. Serafin Geronimo: Ang kriminal ng Baryo Concepcion (Lav Diaz)
19. Divorce Iranian Style (Kim Longinotto/Ziba Mir-Hosseini)
20. Last Night (Don McKellar)
