For the third forum rankdown, we'll be ranking the top 100 films in the They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? top list, 2021 edition.

If you would like to participate, please sign up in this thread! I'll cap the participants at 15 for this go-round, but if we don't get 15 signups we can go with however many are interested.

Rules:

We'll use the same rules from Rankdown II, with one change that will hopefully speed up the final round (see below). Shoutout to Onderhond and cinewest for contributing this idea in the previous thread.

This time around, the game starts with our standard one cut per participant per round structure. Players will still start with 2 vetoes.

Once we reach a round where not everyone can make a cut (example, 13 participants and only 12 films remaining) OR we reach a round where there are no vetoes remaining and there is one more film than there are participants (example, 13 participants and 14 films), we will enter a NEW ballot phase. During this phase, each participant will submit a secret unranked list of films they wish to CUT (exact number of cuts tbd). The 5 films with the fewest votes to cut will proceed automatically to the final phase of the game, a public vote out that will work the same as our second game.

In addition, vetoes will be in effect for this round, with a twist: if a player wishes to veto a cut, they must do so before the cut films are revealed. This will balance the power of a veto advancing a film to the final phase to join the other 5 with the risk of wasting a veto entirely. It is a high-risk, high-reward play, which should make things interesting.

In the final phase, every participant will publicly vote for a film to be cut. The film with the most votes in that round will be cut. If there is a tie, we will have a vote-off specifically between those two films. As in the last game, vetoes will still be in effect. If a player saves their veto all the way to the final round, they can veto a cut after all participants have voted. That will cause the film with the 2nd most votes to be cut instead.

FAQ:

What is a rankdown? A rankdown is a game where participants start with a given list, and then take turns knocking a film out of the running. They can base their decision to cut a film on whatever criteria they choose. The only rule is that when they knock a movie off the list, they have to explain their decision. The game proceeds in order, with each participant choosing a new film to cut, until we reach the final round. In the last round participants will publicly vote for one film to cut each round. This way the champion isn't decided purely by one participant.

Vetoes each participant will have vetoes they can use along the way. If one of their favorites is knocked out, they can veto that choice and it goes back in the pool. The film will also be protected from being cut by the player who made the cut in the subsequent round. However, any other player can still cut a vetoed film at any time! To start, everyone will have two vetoes that can each be used once per game. Use them wisely!

How many people can participate? Somewhere between 5-15 usually works best. It's definitely subjective and arbitrary, but that's part of the quirkiness of a rankdown. If there are too many participants, it winds up becoming just another popularity contest. By keeping the pool of participants small, it allows for some truly surprising results.

Somebody cut one of my favorites! What should I do? Use a veto if you have one! And feel free to talk about why you love the film that just got the axe. This is a game that is intended to spark discussion, but don't take anything personally, or too seriously. It's just a silly game!

The core of the game is to make cuts of your least favorite movies, so that by the end we have movies that are presumably liked (or at least, not disliked) by the most people. This game is obviously more fun if you've seen all or almost all of the movies in the list, and if you're familiar enough with them to pick out your least favorite each round.

Personally, I'm at 94/100 seen on this list, and I'm trying to make that 99/100 in the near future (100/100 if I can get over the hump of watching Greed on YouTube )

I love Greed and have seen it twice I think - on film and on VHS, both at least 20 years ago; time for a re-watch one of these days I guess. It's probably in my top quarter-third of films on the list. I feel like I've seen lots of negativity around it here over the years though and I wouldn't expect it to be one of the last films standing.

Oh, I may enjoy the film a lot. I'm just getting spoiled by watching so many films on the Criterion Channel, so I'm becoming a bit of a quality snob and turning up my nose at the low-quality Youtube upload.

I didn't even think to check how many of the films I'd seen... I just assumed I've seen most of them. Turns out I've only seen 72/100. I have 19 of the remaining 28 on hand so could watch them to hit 91. I currently have 8 favourites and 1 dislike in the Top 100, so I have my clear priorities, but perhaps I haven't seen enough to participate this time?

I've also got Greed left, and I've put it off because there are a couple of versions out there and I can't figure out which one I should watch. I actually have a handful of films like there where I have 2 or more different copies, and instead of spending time to figure out which one to watch, I just watch something else instead.

It will be the penultimate round. Yes it's probably going to take about a month to reach that round, just based on the pace of previous games.

After every round there's a period where people can veto cuts.
You have a couple of options then. You hope others veto the film you want to save, you can see your darling die, or you can be a hero and save your loved one.

I’m cutting Pierrot le fou. Godard does not click for me, and this was my least favorite of his movies in the top 100. I couldn’t get into the story, nothing that happened made any sense, and really I just wanted it to be over after a while.

I am sad to see Playtime cut very first I may have to use one of my vetoes already, I love that movie.

There's only one film on the entire list that I'm even borderline negative about, though probably about a third are films that I don't like nearly as much as the critical mass that put them there. The fun - or maybe I should say "fun" comes in people's comments, I feel I learn more about where people are coming from in their individual tastes, and also maybe a bit more about the general attitudes towards specific films. Sometimes it's obvious though if you've been around long enough - I'm not at all surprised for example that Playtime is an early cut, much as I love it I can see how it could alienate even a lot of "serious" film people. It certainly alienated general audiences!

Is there a point to being strategic in this, in the sense of not eliminating films you think are likely to be vetoed early on? I have one clear dislike on the list, and then a bunch of films that are just okay, but I think the dislike would improve upon a rewatch, so maybe it's unfair to pick it now. Plus, I can almost guarantee I would be forcing someone to waste a veto so early on, which seems kind of cruel. Maybe I'll finally rewatch it.

Anyway, for now, I'll just pick a not-so-great film.

Another good question. After every round there is a 24 hour cooldown period to give everyone a chance to veto any cuts. Once the next round starts you can no longer veto a cut from the previous round, and all those cuts are finalized.
