My only two new favourites from this World Cup are from...Germany (Unter den Brücken) and Poland (Duze zwierze) so that was a coherent final match for me

By the way, Klaus becomes the first from this 8 to reach final four.

Congrats to klaus and many thanks to joachim for taking us through the process smoothly.
Best discoveries to me were Dorogoy tsenoy, Vedreba, A Drifting Life and Davandeh: thanks for bringing these !
I like the game but I havent really enjoyed as much (new) stuff as previous season - 6 was probably my average rating overall so not a good payoff. I was also disappointed that another WW2 B&W 50s movie won. I would favor an all-21st century edition or lowering number of checks (alternatively de-escalating it as we progress), see what more fun it brings. Anyway I would probably not participate as much, or only as manager if we restart straight, but let see how it settles by next WC.

The poll has ended. Thanks to the 11 participants who I hope all watched all the movies:
Die Brucke won 6-5 from Amator
Lonesome beat El Sur by 4 votes while only beating it by 4 stars in 1st round as well.
It beat the other two movies by 3 votes.

Spoiler
My favorite Nobi came last.
2 of the 11 voters each assigned points to a single movie in winners round (5-0-0-0).
If I were to scratch out their votes, it wouldn't change the outcome at all.
Another participant voted two movies 0, including Amator. With their vote scratched out too 3 movies would have been split by 2 votes.. with Giornata and Amator advancing to a tie in final round. Amator would probably win the tiebreaker by having a 1 star advantage.
1 of the 8 voters assigned maximum points to one movie in runnersup round (5-0-0-0).
Only one another assigned 0-votes.
They didn't affect the result. El Sur beat the other contenders 4-2.
5 of the 11 (w/o me) and 4 of the 8 (w/ me) didn't use the opportunity to assign a maximum vote to a movie.
Nobody at all has assigned a maximum scored tie (5-5..) to multiple movies. But some have done so at a lower score (4-4 or 3-3..) without using higher stars.
Someone has assigned a 3-way tie @ 3 stars with another movie scored 4. Pretty modest. I like that.
Fun.

Was there any plan for a new season of the World Cup (or a different kind of cup)
Not yet, but it's been just a few months. Do you think there's enough interest for it already?

speaking for myself, I think I want to focus on another two months of challenges and the ICMFFF preparations, but I am not against already preparing for another round of world cinema kicking off around May. No idea how much interest there is at the moment; either in a regular cup or in a sometimes proposed cup limited to a continent or genre(s).
Another suggestion would be to wait after the Central Asian challenge in July (so starting in August), in the hope some of the countries there can be picked up broader exploration in the Cup too...

For me, that's never a problem, but I'm worried about low participation considering how little time passed.
But I see no problem if it starts, say, in October, coz it gives you plenty of time to focus on other stuff people have watchlisted.

I'm in whenever it starts. Since the last one was only my first I'm not burnt out on the idea yet but I understand others have been involved in all of them and need a break. I'm happy to wait if it is the group consensus but I would prefer to get started sooner than later, even if it is just a couple of months preparing for it (as in watching movies to make our first round choices)

I like the idea of it being a bi-yearly gig. I do enjoy the world cup, but it can be taxing at times. I'd be on board to have preparation start again in the fall, with the cup beginning sometime over the winter holidays.

And then you're quickly put down from heaven when you realize that nobody, if few, really gives a damn about your movie.sol wrote: ↑February 28th, 2021, 6:02 amThat's me at the end of every Country/Region Challenge.Nathan Treadway wrote: ↑February 28th, 2021, 5:36 am The sooner, the better.
I have films I want people to see!I keep thinking "I really should be Manager for this country/region during the next World Cup".

For example, you could give your recs during any of the region challenges, and people would still watch whatever they feel like or looks more accessible. And NOT what you have already checked and recognized as worthwhile.

Yes, I did get off-put when everybody kept complaining about my selection during the last World Cup, but I think I did myself a disservice my selecting a film that nobody else had seen. I have a few films in mind for next time that I have been tried, tested and approved by multiple other users.
Regarding your second paragraph, I don't believe that I have complained about anybody seeing or not seeing my promoted films in the current Benelux Challenge, or disliking them if they have seen them. I don't expect to entice everybody to see a certain film when I promote it during a challenge, but the ability to promote is one of the cool extra benefits that I get from hosting a challenge, so I'm not going to stop doing it, even if I only average one new fan per promoted movie.

I just got that feel that anything that I cherish other people don't, and vice versa. Which is same with music, as I noticed (I wouldn't go into further details now, but imagine you never fancied more than two songs made post-2000 - then you can't help but ask yourself, is it something wrong with me. or it's just the outside world, losing creativity). And not only here on film forums, but in day-to-day life as well.sol wrote: ↑February 28th, 2021, 11:36 amI'm not sure what you're getting at.Mario Gaborović wrote: ↑February 28th, 2021, 8:40 amAnd then you're quickly put down from heaven when you realize that nobody, if few, really gives a damn about your movie.![]()

I guess the way you grew up affects one for good.
So choosing a film on most official lists does seem most reliable... but is it what we REALLY want?

That's not what I'm talking about. My top candidate that I have in mind for Australia is on zero Official Lists but has been favourited at least one other user and seen and liked by at least two more. It's films like that which I have in mind. Still obscure but tested and liked by others.Mario Gaborović wrote: ↑February 28th, 2021, 12:05 pm So choosing a film on most official lists does seem most reliable... but is it what we REALLY want?

I can understand that a part of the regular participants wants to have a bit of time to breathe. I'm only a returned irregular participant so my opinion might not be high priority anyway. And personally I am sometimes (often?) not voting in a round because it's too many deadlines for me (and I always have to watch the whole group even if I'm not interested in all of the movies so I don't watch any of them in the end - although I figure the majority of regulars prefers that)hurluberlu wrote: ↑February 28th, 2021, 8:57 amMore or less my feeling too.Fergenaprido wrote: ↑February 27th, 2021, 10:51 pm I like the idea of it being a bi-yearly gig. If the larger World Cup is bi-annual that could give some opportunity to have a smaller/slower regional cups (or leagues) in the in-between years, maybe also with themed rounds that force the choice of different types of movies than usual. If it was for example an Asian/European/American with 12 participants (main cinematic countries + maybe some countries grouped together/regions, to make themed rounds easier and to not "rob" the small countries of their few promising WC movies) and a league system with 3 rounds à 2.5-3 months (or two groups with 1.5 months time each). Round themes could include something like: genres movies, comedy-only, 2010s/last 5 years only, lower check threshold, a free-for-all round, an additional shorts round. That would be 36 movies over the course of a similar timeframe, the league system would allow for partial participation, the film choices/tournament system would be potentially different enough to either be refreshing enough to work against WC fatigue or to have the regulars not feel compelled to (fully) participate.

I would try to participate, but with everything I'm attempting to watch at the moment, a World Cup might come as a strain. I can't speak for everyone, but I would definitely be more likely to watch the films if they were official checks.
