Voting Rules:
- You must watch both films before you vote.
- To vote, post which of the two movies is your favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)

Voting deadline = Oct 1st
Countdown till deadline

The country that ends at 1st place proceeds to the next round. The ranking of the match will be decided using these rules:
- Movie with most votes wins.
- In case of a tie the match will have a 3 day extension.
- In case there's still a tie then, the next voter decides by sudden death.
Here's a quick summary of how the tournament worksShow
We start with 32 films from 32 countries. Each country has a manager who determines which movie will be watched. In the first round the countries are divided into 8 groups of 4. From each group the countries that end up at #1 and #2 proceed to the next round. In the 2nd round the 16 remaining countries will be divided into 8 matches of 2. The managers pick a new movie. The winner of each match proceeds to the next round. This continues till the final.

A pretty unequal quarterfinal by the look of it.

Indeed. I still think Nachts will triumph but this certainly looks interesting. I don't remember any manager ever voting for the underdog. Not 1 on 1 for sure.

2. Al primo soffio di vento 5/10

Just watched Al primo soffio di vento. Definitely a film made with chaotic energy. It starts out okay but becomes more random and the sound quality doesn't fit well with what is on the screen while some of the closeups and farther away shots don't really work well for the scenes that comes directly before or after. I was expecting Nachts, wenn der Teufel kam to be better than it actually was when I originally watched it. I don't remember much from it but I rated it higher than the other film so I'll rank it first.

Both are beautifully shot, but I had a hard time relating to both of them. The German one had annoying characters though, so Italy gets the vote.

I didn't really enjoy either of these films sadly. I watched the German entry a few months back when I was perusing the 500<400 for films to watch and it sounded like something I would love but it left me cold.

I'm not opposed to the contemplative cinema of the Italian entry and there were many beautiful shots, yet its lack of a strong narrative made it difficult for me to connect with the film or to take much from it. This was my second Piavoli film after Nostos: The Return, which also failed to ignite my interest, and I guess his style of film-making just isn't for me.

Thanks to the managers for their selections, although neither film impressed me I'll still be happy to see more from either country based on the previous picks in the tournament :)

Tough choice!

I usually love Piavoli's movies but "Al primo soffio di vento" is my least favourite of his.
@filmbantha: Imo "Il pianeta azzurro" and "Voci nel tempo" are much better than "Nostos" and "Al primo soffio di vento" si I encourage you to persevere in Piavoli's filmography. There's a much stronger and idiosyncratic vision in the first two. Of course don't expect any narrative

On the other side, "Nachts, wenn der Teufel kam" is a very classical studio movie with a tangible American touch. There's the usual romance that's very annoying and that diminishes the strength of the political views, but it was interesting to watch though

Maybe it would be useful for me to rewatch the Italian entry before the deadline but I probably won't have the time so:

1. Nachts, wenn der Teufel kam 5+
2. Al primo soffio di vento 5

1. Deutschland (NACHTS) 7
2. Italia (SOFFIO) - it'd be more interesting to have this paired with Vedreba or even Rembetiko but of course we can't have nice things like that.

1. Germany - 7ish
2. Italy - 4ish

Al primo soffio di vento was dull - it put me to sleep. When I woke up and finished the film, I found the sound design quite unpleasant.

Nachts wenn der Teufel kam was better, but it wasn't great. For a thriller, the stakes never felt raised - there was no tension sustained driving force behind the plot. Surprised it won so many accolades, but maybe it's because voters at the time felt the need to strongly condemn Nazism.

This is actually the story line of the film; a man falls asleep on a dull afternoon and gets assaulted by "unpleasant" images and sounds. Of course what is unpleasant is all subjective, even in the company of Erik Satie, African drums and the gentle sounds of the Italian night.
Never thought my selection would have such of an effect on someone, thanks for sharing !

After seeing the film, I agree, but it is tagged as a thriller on imdb, so I suppose I went into it with certain expectations.

I like to call it early :P

Not a lot of managers have voted against own movie, especially recently. Without that, Deutsch world have had a 6 pt lead.
I voted against my own movie in 66% of matches where I was manager, but almost in 100%.
However in one of them the top movie was my favorite of all world cups.
