Mmm don't think I'll watch any more today before the poll ends so here goes:

1. The Tales of Hoffman (Powell/Pressburger)
2. The Tragedy of Othello: The Moor of Venice (Orson Welles)
3. Journal d'un curé de campagne / Diary of a Country Priest (Robert Bresson)
4. Bakushû / Early Summer (Yasujirô Ozu)
5. Ace in the Hole (Billy Wilder)
6. Hardrock, Coco and Joe: The Three Little Dwarfs (unknown)
you'll all hate it but I can't help myselfShow
7. Guernica (Robert Hessens/Alain Resnais)

8. Meshi / Repast (Mikio Naruse)
9. Der Verlorene / The Lost One (Peter Lorre)
10. M (Joseph Losey)
11. Scrooge / A Christmas Carol (Brian Desmond Hurst)
12. The Browning Version (Anthony Asquith)
13. He Ran All the Way (John Berry)
14. Rabbit Fire (Chuck Jones)
15. The Red Badge of Courage (John Huston)
16. Pandora and the Flying Dutchman (Albert Lewin)
17. His Kind of Woman (John Farrow)
18. The Day the Earth Stood Still (Robert Wise)
19. Fröken Julie / Miss Julie (Alf Sjöberg)
20. Pool of London (Basil Dearden)

HM: love 'em, but maybe not as much as I "should" - and they don't need my help: An American in Paris, A Place in the Sun, Strangers on a Train

HM: might deserve a place, but need to see again: Bellissima, The Man in the White Suit, The River, Sommarlek, The Steel Helmet, A Streetcar Named Desire

Plenty of other excellent films from this year also of course, too many to mention, and still a great many to see, especially from France, Italy, Japan and Mexico. And more noir of course!

COMMENT: One of the greatest years ever for British cinema IMO, with five films making my list including the top spot, and several other contenders; an excellent year for Japanese cinema, like the rest of the decade, though I still have much to see. Overall, though a great year (like every year :P but especially this period) this strikes me as just a wee bit thinner in some important areas than some other years in the immediate postwar era. While Ace in the Hole and a few other films noir make the list, I don't think there's quite the depth there that the previous few years provided, nor are the top few as great as those of, say, 1954 or 1958. Science fiction as a major popular genre really takes off this year but again, I'm not as enthused as many people are over even the best films of the year. Musicals and westerns have no hold on my list - there are good candidates, but little that really hits it out of the park. Maybe what it all boils down to is that in this very America-dominated decade, this is one of the lesser years for American cinema, particularly the popular genres - which have always been Hollywood's strong point. At least that's my take at the moment.

Great year; for British cinema in particular (as Ale alluded to, and I haven't even seen the P&P), but also for Ava Gardner. I'm looking forward to the results!
