A few additional notes:

One ballot could not be counted because no URLs were provided.
One ballot had 21 films and 21 URLs listed, with two films ranked at #13. Consequently, only the top 12 films on this ballot were counted.
One vote for Nuit et brouillard (1956) was not counted because it was not for a 1960 film.

Thanks for hosting, Gromit.

I hit my personal goal of 100 total watched films from 1960. So, yay me.

Already underway with 1951.

Ha, also had the same goal, and just made it - 1960 had been the year with my lowest viewing total between 1933 and 2018 a couple of months ago. 1951 I have 130 seen and not nearly as many "big" films left to see so I doubt I will put as much effort in there as I did with 60 or 74.

Anyway thanks also to Gromit. Some minor disappointments for me - not enough love for the musicals from Hong Kong or India that made my top 5, and I continue to be somewhat underwhelmed by the winner, as my as I love Hitch generally. Peeping Tom does a lot more with a similar theme I think. Oh well, disagreements are half the fun.

I just noticed that only 4 of the top 20 are USA films. Surely that's a record for the YbY polls.

Damn, hadn't noticed that. Although #1 is American of course. I suspect several other years in the 60s are pretty close though.

In addition, there can't have been many years where the average performance in the poll of the Oscar Best Picture nominees was so poor.

Well it's one of the less-inspiring Oscar lineups if you ask me - and I guess, our voters in general. The Apartment is widely considered a major classic (haven't seen it in a long time myself - liked it but would have to see it again to think about voting for it), Elmer Gantry a minor one, perhaps verging on major, and the other three... I don't think any is really considered a bad film on the level of Greatest Show on Earth or Crash, but I look at the list and I'm thinking "those 3 films were nominated for BP? Really?". And I like The Alamo, but it wouldn't even make my top 100 westerns from the golden era for the genre. Maybe not even top 200.

Did anyone else vote for Aki tachinu, a.k.a. The Approach of Autumn, a.k.a. Autumn Has Already Started? It was a late add for me --watched it the night before the deadline. I think it's top-tier Naruse; wonderful use of urban landscapes and characteristically builds to a resonant climax that doesn't topple into sentiment. The child actors are excellent --I wonder if it's not more well-known because they are the forefront and the major stars aren't in this one.

(It would have made my Zero Official Checks list had I seen it in time, and it will surely make my 500<400 list.)

Out of my 100 from 1960, it was #25. I agree with all your points, jeff_v. It was very enjoyable Naruse.

Side note, I had watched the entire thing in SD only to find out immediately afterwards that there's an HD version.
Don'tcha hate when that happens?! :pinch:

Yeah it was one I didn't get to either. Whole bunch of Japanese films from 1960 and I could have watched just those but I didn't go that direction. Meh. Naruse's star continues to brighten regardless.

sorry I didn't get back with my links but I had that CoronaVirus thing and have been out of the game.

I think I predicted most of the biggies although I had No idea LE TROU was so feted. If it is the one I think it is I rated it about a 5/10

And I'd forgotten about the Bergman. I guess it is time I finally saw an Ozu

Never heard of 17 & 18

Thought SATURDAY NIGHT etc would do better.

INHERIT THE WIND I found pretty tedious but I don't much like courtroom stuff and don't much care for Tracy (March I adore).

The one I really think neglected is Kazan's WILD RIVER, a beautifully made study of tradition vs progress with wonderful performances from the 3 principals (Clift, Remick, Van Fleet), stunning colour cinematography and a haunting Kenyon Hopkins score. I believe it was Kazan's favourite of his own films and Remick's favourite of her own too - and its not hard to see why.. I can't believe anyone who watches it will conclude otherwise so I suspect it is unseen. If you have never done so please check it out. It is a quiet, neglected gem.

Image

I didn't get a chance to give any detail on my "obscurities" so here goes:

LONG NIGHT OF 43 - powerful look at Italian WW2 politics with betrayal and adulyery the main ingredients and British Belinda Lee in full Magnani mode (she was killed in a car crash soon after)
Image

THE ADOLESCENTS a sort of low key , provincial DOLCE VITA with Catherine Spaak as the innocent corrupted and C Marquand & J Sorel amongst the corrupters.

INTRIGE A TAORMINA - jet set frolics on a yacht Belinda Lee again plus Elke Sommer & Sylva Koscina amongst the eye candy.

MISTRES OF THE WORLD - Dieterle helmed attempt to replicate old adventure serials from 20s & 30s - there is 2 part 3hr official German release dvd with No English subs but the dialogue isnt the thing here - I got the dubbed telescoped 1hr 45 min UK release (ioffer your best bet) and watched that prior to the full version and it is pretty easy to follw the latter. Martha Hyer , Carlos Thompson, Lino Ventura, Sabu and Micheline Presle as the titular villainess. Enormous fun for a dull lockdown afternoon if you can round it up.
Image

Revving up for 1951 and the year containing my pick for the three most romantic minues in cinema history

While the most likely suspect probably won I think this is a very exciting and varied list. Seen 58 out of 66 on the main list, and Iout of the 8 I have left I see some very interesting films, especially the top 2: Elmer Gentry (#37) and The Ninth Circle (#54).

Can you add the extended list on ICM as well? I see several interesting films on it, like Valurile Dunarii (already have it), Nacht fiel über Gotenhafen (watchlisted), Krotkaya (never heard of), Voskreseniye (never heard of ...), and many many more.

BAD FILM !!!!!!!!!!!

I almost reported you for that Ale! :ph43r: :circle: :whistling:

I'd personally rate it better than 8/13 of the top 20 i have seen in our poll - and among the best half dozen of 52 (SUDDEN FEAR my top pic). Obviously someone should have taken a polo mallet to Betty Hutton but Chuck is sexy and authoritative The definitive "take charge" guy (l) , Gloria sassy and amusing, and Jimmy touching and convincing, the train crash a real bobbydazzler, the production values as high as a big top, the animals are all cute and all in all its a great no brainer for a Saturday night. DeMarvelous! :D :guns:

Yes - its one of my favourites

I think my number one word is discombobulate, but snollygoster and parsimonious are up there too with the all time greats. Fecund is a favourite. Lollapalooza is a real bobbydazzler as well esp when used by Rodgers & Hart

From THOU SWELL
Thou swell, thou witty, thou sweet, thou grand
Wouldst kiss me pretty? Wouldst hold my hand?
Both thine eyes are cute too, what they do to me
Hear me holler, I choose a sweet lollapalooza in thee

is that a rhyme to die for or what ?

I like making them up too
Fumblegusset is my best effort so far - a sexually inexperienced or incompetent young man.

No surprise for Psycho topping the list. Looks like I am the only one voted for Sons and Lovers.
