Boy Meets Girl (1984 - Leos Carax) - I watched this 0 check movie last night and was blown away, yet it does not appear to have made the top 1000 even. Maybe people assumed it was an official check? Any love out there for this movie. I will be voting for it next time for sure.

Such an essential question. I tend to think that it's worthwhile trying to understand authorial intention but that to give this intention primacy when it comes to interpretation is to make a bid for objectivity when the experience of all art is subjective. Once art is shared, understanding is no longer under the control of the person who created it.
So, if I can see something amazing in that little scrap of paper on the floor, it becomes amazing, at least to me, and if I can sell the idea to the right people, it can become as valuable as my ability to sell it.

Of course, it's not easy to interest a great many in a scrap of paper, no matter how you try to convince people to imagine it, but it is fairly easy to captivate an audience by stimulating certain neuro-receptors, and you don't even need much creativity, imagination, or skill to do so.
Abandonment of intent is often the spoor of the imbecile, but sticking to intent too rigidly is often the spoor of another type of imbecile. Maximise the available richness, know when an artist's subconscious got the better of their conscious, or where they produced a prism through which can shine divers and wondrous lights.
One thing I love about reading interviews with Eric Rohmer is that in almost every situation where an interviewer provides him with an interpretation or asks about an intent, he well say something akin to "I didn't do it consciously, but it is possible" or "That was not my interpretation, but it makes so much sense" or even "That could very well be true" - in one interview, I believe it was after A winter's Tale the interviewer even spotted something which Rohmer didn't know he had added - the interviewer mentioned similarities to a writer, and Rohmer got really interested as he had been re-reading him and realized that motifs/styles had snuck in. I do think there is something very interesting with directors who make their films in such an open way (but then Rohmer often made films to disprove an idea he himself had, or present the best counter to it - so everything being true makes sense for him).

I think we can appreciate films in many different ways. Intent is one, and it is great and can be very, very clear - like the Wachowskis clarifying hat The Matrix is a trans metaphor - yes, obviously take that onboard as the intent, or a intent - but then there is also the area of what can be read into a film - or how it CAN be understood - or how a film has actually been understood. These are every bit as real, and exploring why a film was read X way, is also intriguing - as is finding utterly outlandish but possible interpretations - it can be a really fun intellectual exercise - and I suppose that is the beauty of art - i.e. that there are so many contexts and frameworks you can assess them by,

Sorry for bump but..

1. By far the greatest list of this forum (lol). Proves that more people should delve in unofficial films. The list also has a lot of variety instead of arthouse and classics saturating an entire list. Many of my favourites made it
2. I think this is one of the few lists where so many of my favourites made it. It's sad so many are unofficial but I seem to tend to have an eye for unconsciously watching the best of the rest (lol). I'm not trying actively to watch unofficial films, but I don't really care about my rank or whether a film is official or not. Seems like chances are higher i'll like a film when it isn't official, because many classics, well-received films by critics and mainstream blockbusters with commercial success are all filtered by the very concept of this list. Not that I hate them, but a lot of the time i don't get the love for it.

Great work!

I just looked at my own list. 8 films have become official - 1 is on the Pinoy Rebyu list, 1 on the ICM most favorited, and 6 on 500<400. So your thesis seems to have some credence.

One of the forum's most interesting polls, too bad I just missed it this year.

117/250 checked (almost all in the Top 25) & 292/1000 - exceptionally high for me! Probably because of ..

.. yep. It's where many of the great 2010s films end up. Our taste, when added together, also isn't too bad. B)
