iCM Forum's Favourite Films on Zero Official Lists

Image

It's time to showcase your favourite underappreciated gems!

The rules
· Films, mini-series, episodes from tv anthology series are all allowed
· Films that become permanently official between now and the deadline are NOT eligible (i.e. through new list adoption, being added to Criterion or TSPDT Noir list, etc.)
· List can be on imdb or icm
· Fully ranked, partially ranked, or unranked lists only (will be considered ranked unless specified); group-ranked lists will not be allowed
· Half-life will again be 50, unless the submitted lists drop drastically in size
· Final list will again be 250, unless the number of participants drops drastically
· Films that switch between official and unofficial each week because of imdb list updates are eligible
· Films from 2019 & 2020 are not eligible, just like how we do it for the 500<400 list.
· Note: Since the entire Cremaster Cycle is an official check, the individuals 1,2,4,&5 cycles are not eligible (3 is separately official as well).

Deadline for submissions
Friday, July 31st, midnight PST - this gives you just under three weeks to put together a list.

Why participate?
· It's an official poll, and everyone loves official things here :P
· It's a chance to showcase films that you think should become official
· It's going to be so unpredictable, so the entertainment value should be high :D (even though we've run this poll twice before, many films have become official in the meantime, so it's still somewhat unpredictable, especially in the lower regions)

All of your checks sorted by # Official Toplists and then sorted alphabetically - you'll have to go to the first page of 0 official checks to see your list.

Quite easy for me, since I have a ranked Top 625 of ICM. For people who have something similar, export the list, sort by official toplists, remove the 0+s, remove any 2019/2020 entries and import the result into a new list.

Image

A pretty long list for me this time, it seems 64.3% (with another 12.8% being just on one list) of my personal favorites are unofficial. Bit hard to recommend one single film from it, but why not give Woman of Water [Mizu no Onna] a go. Mysterious, unique, beautiful, criminally underseen and very arthouse-friendly.

I think you mean remove everything but the 0's? or remove the 1+s?

Took a quick gander at your list and saw Clockers there - I should give that and Crooklyn second chances; I remember liking them, but not thinking they were anything special, but that was when they were new. But that reminds me that Jungle Fever also is on 0 official lists which I find pretty astonishing.

Clockers and Crooklyn happen to be two of my favorite films of the '90s. I still haven't seen Jungle Fever though.

Another weird one is Dog Star Man. You think with its revered status in film history it would be on...something.
Edit - It's on 7 official lists. But it came up on my list of films with 0 official lists? Or this might have something to do with how there are separate pages for the full film and the different parts. Anyway I took it out, hopefully that's the only mistake.

Anyway, a fun list to make, since it gives us a chance to promote some films we think are highly underseen or underrated. (Something in the Air! Mean Creek! Mystery Road!)

Not having an iCM account and hence having no adequate way to see which ones of my favourites are eligible would somebody be able and willing to offer support in my creating this list?

A year or two ago the Dog Star Man and Histoire(s) du cinéma parts were both combined into single entries, and the single entries are the ones that are used for the official lists. I though that was long enough ago/publicized enough that I didn't mention it in the OP like I did with Cremaster (which was only changed a month or two ago). I can add them to the OP if it helps, but yes, none of the individual parts of either film/series is eligible.

How did you create your list for the 2015 version of this poll?

I think the easiest way would be to provide an imdb of the films you're considering, and then someone can import that to icm, filter out the official checks, and then send it back to you so you can update your imdb list.

Yeah, in 2015 I sent my unfiltered favourites (IMDb) list to joachimt and he did something to that effect. Would be cool if somebody could help me with that again.

Well, this was one of the hardest lists ever. I decided to do mine from scratch to make sure I didn't miss anything. Ranked, but super loosely after the first 100-200. I don't want to think about how long this list would be without TSZDT being official. I included shorts and mini-series this time, but some are arguably TV series so I'm just going with IMDb categories and I'll remove them if needed.

I mostly am redoing mine from scratch also; I did a list 2 1/2 years ago but stupidly put it on IMDb - which I still like for lists generally but is useless for things dependent on # of checks or official lists - so I thought, I'll just transfer that over. But 2 1/2 years is a long time when it comes to changes in Official-dom it turns out. Loads and loads of films I would have missed because they've dropped out of official status in the intervening time, esp. from 500<400, DTC and TSZDT. So now I'm pretty close and am looking at everybody else's lists which are giving me some good things I might have missed. I guess that's one of the curses of being a high rater and liking too much  hard to keep track of all the stuff I want to be on there.

I really hated The Butterfly Effect but I've had numerous discussions with people over the years whose tastes are closer to mine than yours who just love it, and I've developed at least a little desire to see it again. I mean, I love the basic idea and it's pretty hard for me not to enjoy anything to do with time travel, time paradoxes, alternate realities, etc... but... Ashton Kutcher. Sigh.

I don't think so either. If I do ever re-watch it, it will probably be alongside some other films with similar themes/plots; crap films are typically more interesting when you can do comparisons with other (hopefully better) films at the same time.

At the time I saw it (age 13/14) I hated Kutcher but found the film and the time travel stuff really fun. But then a few years ago I watched a short clip and it was just so bad. The acting was bad, the dialogue was awful and it was weirdly edited/paced. I couldn’t believe it was the same film that I remembered. I honestly think I’d probably hate it now but I’d need to rewatch it to change my rating. Based on what I saw I can’t imagine anyone liking it but idk maybe out of context it doesn’t work.

Yeah I kind of figured that but it’s pretty annoying for stat purposes :P and also since almost nothing in that list would be something I would actually want to find via keyword search, except maybe to filter them out.

I didn't see it brand-new, think I saw it maybe 3-4 years after it came out. I vaguely remember liking Amy Smart in it, but maybe I just thought she was hot, or maybe she's just less bad than the other actors. Kutcher I remember being just HORRIBLE. It's funny, I have a bit of a soft spot for That 70s Show - because it's a closer mirror of my growing-up experience than probably any other sitcom (time/place-wise anyway) - and I used to think Kutcher was just playing a dumb character on that show, which was appropriate - turns out he's kind of like that in real life, and just can't act to save his life outside of his small comfort zone.

I have so much to choose from and so many ways to approach this (major favorites, very hidden gems, quirky outliers, guilty pleasures) that I first filtered it in various way before even starting to make a selection. I also ignored 2017 an 2018 for instance, and shorts, and movies that are checked so little that they don't have a chance anyway, and... so on.

Looking at the top 100 I came to in this way, I am seeing loads of Eastern-European art-house (bartas, sokurov, balabanov, loznitsa and a whopping 4 from zulawski) and loads of Japanese cult (sono, miike, ishikawa, tsukamoto, fukui, ishii, wakamatsu, toyoda). Next to those there are a few other names with multiple entries like Ruiz, Seidl, Sautet, van Warmerdam and, with 5 the most entries in the list, Hal Hartley, who seems to be the forgotten/least valued of the 90's gen US indie directors.
- 17/100 have more than 400 checks, most checks has Naissance des pieuvres (2007) with 984 at the moment

- glad to see there is room for another Japanese list to be official
- why is Sautet not doing better on the 500<400 and Doubling lists?
