Rufus: Thanks for running this poll.

I will be hosting the 1960 poll, but I don't expect to start it for a couple of weeks.

Thanks for hosting, Rufus-T!

And thanks to everyone who posted along the way last month to help me add over three dozen films (in June alone) from 1974 to my checked list!

And finally, thank you, 1974. Some fascinating works coming out of studios from all over the world that year.

That was a great little thread and your comparison is hilarious, though I haven't seen The Gambler. I'm pretty much always disappointed in gambling films though and with all the bad movies I'm watching this month I can't add in something else that's supposed to be good but that I probably won't like. Oh well.

Thanks for running it Rufus! I actually put more effort into catching up with this year/poll than I have for a while and was rewarded with a new #1 and another masterpiece, as well as a bunch of very good films, really upended the list I would have submitted. Pleased to see Rivette make the top 10 and very pleased to see two films beating The Godfather II. I guess it's about time for another Chinatown watch for me - I like it, but don't love it, and as much as I love noir, and frequently love Polanski's earlier films, I should like it more than I do. Third (or fourth?) time's the charm, maybe? Maybe in Noirvember.

Zardoz still not getting much love... :(

It's a mixture of both--the look of a man who knows he'll do anything to get people to stop thinking of him only as James Bond, even if it means wearing a giant red diaper.

So if I had pushed up Lancelot du lac just 1 spot it would have been in the top 20? Damn it. This is the problem with the 60s/70s in general - if Lancelot was released last year it would be in my top 3, for this year it couldn't even crack my top 10. It is hard to promote fantastic films when they drown in fantastic films.

That said, the results are largely to my liking as well and I'm particularly happy to see The Man Who Sleep do as well as it did - and while I didn't vote for it, great to see Edward Munch do so well too. Even The Mouth Agape cracked the top 20, now that is just shocking and fantastic.

In terms of my statistics:

63/91

Top 5 still to see:

23. Still Life (I believe I was waiting for a better copy)
27. Ankur
31. Hearts and Minds
34. Conversation Piece (not been able to find it in Italian, turned off the English version years ago)
39.The Text of Light

Of the others I should definitely get around to Swept Away and The Deer, and this poll also put L'invenzione di Morel on the map for me, it looks quite alluring.

I wasn't crazy about The Deer, and you know my love for Iranian cinema generally. One of the big bummers about COVID for me was the cancelling of the Wisconsin Film Fest, which was going to have a (newly?) restored print of it, I believe in 35mm - maybe that would have made the difference. Oh well it will probably be available in a better copy soon, somewhere. I had three Iranian films in my top 10 though, and three more in the also-rans, so a great year for that cinema for sure.

This is the thing that is very frustrating with so many older Iranian films; their current condition is often horrendous, or at least quite poor. Even major classics like The Cow - which I did see and still found great, but it detracts so much, and you are not getting a fair representation of the film.

There are so many restorations now that I generally decide to wait if I believe there is a chance for a major upgrade.

Don't know when you saw The Cow but there is a decent copy available now. Very excited about getting to see Beizai's Downpour again in hopefully pretty decent condition soon with the new World Cinema set from Criterion, and Golestan's Brick and Mirror was restored recently so that ought to be appearing too. But yeah, it's just a trickle of all the great stuff that's out there, and even more great stuff that is totally unknown to anybody outside of Iran.

Great to hear of the impending Criterion release of 'Downpour'. That's one I shall have to try to get. I loved the film when I watched it a year or 18 months ago, despite the frankly horrendous quality of the upload I sourced. Very pleasant news!

Happy as well to see the remarkable 'Still Life' make the top 25 here. Certainly one of my most unforgettable viewings of the last couple of years.
That's all, folks!

Cheers for this!

No great surprises - although THIEVES LIKE US definitely deserves more love.....

FWIW I rate that ZARDOZ image as possibly the scariest in cinema..... and I'm not easily shocked... I'd say I;m a big giallo fan....I sat through SALO, THE BROWN BUNNY and THE NIGHT PORTER ( which I thought would do better than it did = although it is a tough film to actually like...- once the last word in screen controversy.. ILSA SHE WOLF OF THE SS for the art house crowd!.... )... not to mention the entire back catalogue of Maria Montez..... :whistling:
