Voting Rules:
- You must watch both films before you vote.
- To vote, post which of the two movies is your favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)

Voting deadline = Jun 4th
Countdown till deadline

The country that ends at 1st place proceeds to the next round. The ranking of the match will be decided using these rules:
- Movie with most votes wins.
- In case of a tie the match will have a 3 day extension.
- In case there's still a tie then, the next voter decides by sudden death.
Here's a quick summary of how the tournament worksShow
We start with 32 films from 32 countries. Each country has a manager who determines which movie will be watched. In the first round the countries are divided into 8 groups of 4. From each group the countries that end up at #1 and #2 proceed to the next round. In the 2nd round the 16 remaining countries will be divided into 8 matches of 2. The managers pick a new movie. The winner of each match proceeds to the next round. This continues till the final.

1. Sanatorium pod klepsydra 9/10
2. El violín 8/10

El violín is a very good movie. I just didn't feel like I was watching something special, which was the feeling I had when I watched Sanatorium twice.

01 - Sanatorium pod klepsydra

02 - El violín

Enjoyed both. Sanatorium pod klepsydra is a top 75 favourite though so the ranking was pretty much predetermined.

1. Sanatorium pod klepsydra 5/10
2. El violín 5/10

This was not a fun match. I first watched El violín three years ago. When I first saw that the film was picked for WC, I tried to remember it but I couldn't bring back any memories. It took my mind a few days to remember the film. I didn't care for the film.

Due to the fact that El violín was a forgettable film for me, all Sanatorium pod klepsydra had to do was not suck. I never watched Sanatorium pod klepsydra before, but I always wanted to, so this gave me the perfect opportunity to watch it. Sadly, Sanatorium pod klepsydra was an incredibly boring experience for me. The film starts out fine but after ten minutes or so, it just drags on and on and on. By the halfway point, I thought for sure I'd rank El violín higher than this film because a boring film that's roughly over two hours long is worse than a boring film that's roughly over 90 minutes long because that's 30 more minutes of complete boredom. In the end, I did not care for either film. But Sanatorium pod klepsydra did have some beautifully shot scenes with music that compliment the scenes even if the scenes that comes afterwards every single time are dreadfully boring. And the beautiful shots are enough to put the film over the edge compared to a film I barely remember but agonized in what few memories I have of the film.

This is the first time I have seen both films before a WC match and they are excellent picks. I hope this is an indicator of the quality of the films I have yet to watch in the second round!

It was a close call, both are strong 7/10s for me but The Hourglass Sanatorium is higher on my ratings list, if only by a small margin.

1. Sanatorium pod klepsydra
2. El violín

Rare occasion for me too, seeing all the films in the match previously (2016-17) and keeping some notes I wrote then. There is plenty of fantasy, symbolism and gorgeous visuals in the Polish film, they make it singular, sometimes a reminder of Jodorowsky's works, but ultimately tedious, as others said before. Quite the opposite, El violín is simple and straightforward, and, despite the hazardous life of the lead characters, it has a calm mood that I enjoyed. So:

1. El violín — 6/10
2. Sanatorium pod klepsydra — 5/10

Sanatorium pod klepsydra sure doesn't look like a 5/10 from the start. Looks like about one of the most atmospheric films so far.

1. Poland - The Hourglass Sanatorium
2. Mexico - The Violin

Very tight. THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT would have been a clear winner, but SANATORIUM has some narrative flaws. Even so its Poe-esque imaginery is unforgettable.

1. The Violin - 7ish
2. The Hourglass Sanatorium - 3-4ish

Sanatorium was uninteresting to me. Didn't care for the aesthetic, or the story, or anything, really. And this quote from someone's review on imdb caught my eye - "The sleazy shots of half-naked women are a nice touch" - and I find it quite disturbing. The comment itself is sleazy, and I was baffled by the decision to make all of the women except the mother have their clothes often open/barely covering their bodies. Seemed unnecessary. Overall, I disliked this film, but I'm not sure if it's the film I really detested or the book that it's based on (since I don't know how faithful the film is to the book).

Violin was a tough watch from the get-go, but thankfully it mellowed out after about 10 minutes. Some misses here and there, and I didn't think the story wrapped up as well as it could have in the end (not that every loose end needed to be tied up) even though I did like the ending for the most part. I'm on the fence about whether or not the black-and-white cinematography was a good or bad idea, but the acting and music were both enjoyable, and I thought the story was an important one that isn't often told (though maybe it's really common in Mexican cinema and I'm just unaware).

1. El Violin
2. Sanatorium pod klepsydra

Sanatorium has some of the best mise-en-scene I've ever seen. From sets to costumes to lighting, everything is a wondrous cabinet of curiosities. On the other hand, most of the movie passed without me having a single clue what anyone was talking about. (Incidentally, I've felt similarly about many other Polish movies, such as O-bi O-ba, Austeria, Petla, Third Part of the Night). I suppose that's the point - the movie is more about sensory experience than dialogue, but as a result there's no narrative or dramatic tension. And El Violin has plenty of both.
