5 films in one year is certainly impressive
Ehh, I dunno, lots of directors at that time were churning out 4,5 or more. But not many at the average level that Naruse achieves. William Beaudine has 6 credits for 1935 - and he has 10 for each of three later years, and 189 features total. But I don't think anybody is talking about any of his achievements outside of sheer quantity...
And for 1935, I'll raise you my "favorite" director Sam Newfield with 7. Four which I rated 3/10, Two that got 2/10 and one that got the impressive score of 1/10. For the Western Challenge I've just watched 6 of 17(!!!) films he directed in 1946. Which means I've already seen 120 of his films, with over a decade left of his output.
William Beaudine was actually quite good early on in his career, but somewhere down the line he gave up and only got to do poverty row stuff.
