Year by Year Polls: 1935 (Nominations) CLOSED

#1

Post by maxwelldeux » May 3rd, 2020, 6:54 pm

Welcome to the Year-by-Year Poll!

Image

This poll is for the year 1935

These polls are fairly simple. We work our way through film history selecting a different year each time, and you list your top films from the given year. Depending on the number of voters, the poll usually produces a list of around 50-90 films and is a great way of finding recommendations. Lots of people will also list other films outside their top 20 as honorable mentions or runners-up.

The Rules

- You can vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 films.

- Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies, and TV mini-series are all eligible, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

- We use IMDb dates for consistency, so a title should be listed on IMDb as 1935.

- Your ballot can be ranked, unranked, or partially ranked, but I will assume it's ranked unless otherwise stated. For ranked ballots it makes it easier if you use a numbered list.

- IMPORTANT: Along with a list of the titles from 1935, please include the corresponding list of bare IMDb urls for the same films. Your ballot will be deemed disqualified if the IMDb urls are not included.

The Scoring

For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive a number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each succeeding title receiving one fewer point. So the top title on a list of 20 films will receive 20 points, the next 19 points and so on. If the list has only 10 films, the top title will receive 10 points, the next one 9, and so on. If there are 5 films on the list, the top film will receive 5 points, the next one 4, well you get the idea.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot if it had been ranked. If there are 20 films on the ballot, this means each one would receive 10.5 points.

The next poll will be 1974 followed by 1960.

Thank you and happy listing!

Predictions? Not sure really - Hitch always does well, but TOP HAT an Astaire-Rogers favourite and the Dickens much admired. FRANKENSTEIN's missus is a crowdpleaser and the 35 BOUNTY well thought of too. And I'm no fan but the MARX BROS offering that year considered a great one by fans I think.

Obscurities? None really but a shout to LIVING ON VELVET, an airy romance directed by Frank Borzage, moving effortlessly from comedy to drama with Kay Francis as socialite involved with bitter wastrel George Brent, an aviator responsile for the death of his family. Brent is a total revelation to anyone used to him in his usual role of rather dull leading man to bigger female stars, presumably under guidance not to pull too much focus from Bette or Ruth or Garbo.

4. Tsuma no bara no yô ni / Wife! Be Like a Rose! (Mikio Naruse)

20. Golgotha (Julien Duvivier)
HM would include Mizoguchi's two films from this year, Ozu's Tôkyô no yado, all of the Laurel and Hardy films for the year, musicals Roberta and Naughty Marietta, Renoir's Toni, Captain Blood, several Universal horror films, and several Disney and Warner Brothers cartoons. And The 39 Steps, which doesn't need my help but which does need a refresher viewing from me. In short, a terrific year for the three biggest national cinemas of the age, the USA, France and Japan, and for comedy - with 7 of my top 10 in this category, I suspect this is one of the most comedy-heavy lists I've made.

Significant films yet to see include the other 3 Naruse films, which I'd hoped to get to but didn't, Crime and Punishment, Magnificent Obsession, Peter Ibbetson, Les Misérables, La bandera, Anna Karenina, Alice Adams, Dangerous, China Seas, The Ghost Goes West, Broadway Melody of 1936, Bon chance!, Barbary Coast, Hands Across the Table, Jinsei no onimotsu, Mazurka, and many others.
