iCM Forum World Cup Season 4 - Round 2 preparation

#1

Post by joachimt »

Let's have a place to prepare round 2 of the World Cup. In this OP I'll list all the decisions about how round 2 will be done. You can also use it to discuss countries and possible choices, but managers shouldn't post their selected movies here. Instead they should PM them to me.

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT YOUR MOVIE: May 19th
Countdown till deadline

Decisions about round 2:
- 8 groups of each 2 countries.
- The groups will be made randomly from 2 pots. Pot 1 will include the 8 #1's of round 1. Pot 2 will include the 8 #2's of round 1.
- Countries that competed against each other in round 1, won't compete against each other again in round 2.
- Pace will be 2 weeks per match with 0.5 week overlap.
- First match starts May the 21st.

Guidelines for managers to choose a movie:
- Less than 1000 checks (at the moment the movie is picked).
- Maximum runtime of 180 minutes.
- Only one movie per director for a country in the whole season. A director with movies in multiple countries can be chosen once for each country.
- No movies from season 1 or season 2 or season 3.
- Coproductions are allowed, but with an explanation why a movie certainly belongs to the country it competes for.

Countries that proceed from round 1 to round 2:

How about:
Spoiler
This is what I wrote about the film on last year's Iranian Challenge thread:
Spoiler
Based on an acclaimed Iranian novel, this WTF movie apparently flows better if one knows the complex story beforehand, but this is still easy to appreciate even when the plot and character motivations make little sense. The whole thing plays out like a living, breathing nightmare, full of odd colours, oodles of fog, offbeat camera lensing of the Morgiana and The Cremator variety, voyeuristic treetop shots a la Miller's Crossing, creepy point-of-view walking shots and low camera angles from inside shallow graves. And there are ominously cackling supporting characters too. For interested parties, the YT print is shoddy, but the subs are very readable and I can only imagine how glorious it would look with a decent digital restoration.
Probably not a film for most tastes, but if I recall correctly OldAle quite liked it too.

Same here. I had a plan, only using unofficial movies for this game, but the new Cinema Tropical list screwed my plans for that so might as well go for something on other list(s) as well.

First film that comes to my mind is Donskoy's Raduga (Rainbow), but there may be too many similarities between this and The Unforgettable. Best alternative: Dorogoy tsenoy (The Horse That Cried).

Wait a minute, Ukraine is not advancing! :P

I have a question for you all. Do you think that black comedy can easily translate or is it better to go with a good drama or somewhere in between or something else?

I'd say it also depends on the quality of the subtitles, and how culture-specific the comedy/jokes are.

With Match G finishing, there are exactly 7 European and 7 non-European winners*. Match H looks like it will split the regions as well. Do we want to make the round 2 matches all Europe vs Non-Europe, or would that be complicating things too much?

*Russia was seeded as non-European; if both China and India advance, Russia could be moved to European.

No, they gonna be split to group winners vs group runners-up (just like in real FIFA world championships).

Well, based on my experience with this forum I'd say your safest bet is a sex comedy - everyone here is wild about that stuff.

As long as everyone checks their #wokebloke hats at the door, that basically gives Poland a free pass into round 3.

I am. Or should I leave the forum, you mean? If I hadn't abstained from voting in that round you'd all be watching a fab U.S. sex comedy next - you guys don't know what you're missing out on - oh, well, your loss.

Nope, no need to leave the forum. Just that you hadn't voted in any match and didn't post anything, so I was wondering if you even noticed your tiny defeat.

Under 1000 checks.

The rules are listed in the first post.

Anyone want to suggest some Polish films? I have a few in mind but they are likes and not loves and I would like to watch a couple more at least before the deadline.

Edit: preferably stuff off the beaten path, not a lot of checks, no or 1 list, etc.

I can't offer much but this is what I've got in order of my preference.

Sara (1997) 69 checks/0 lists
Córki dancingu (2015) 595/2
Wrony (1994) 136/3
Demon (2015) 187/0

tt0064570 - Lalka 1968 - The Doll
tt0054119 - Niewinni Czarodzieje 1960 - Innocent Sorcerers

my of the track tips for Poland, underrated movies, three of them not on any official lists. For this game I think the 60's movies are your best bet though, so I included Innocent Sorcerers too.

Thanks for the Poland recs. A few were on my radar, a few others I'll look into. Trick will be getting myself to watch a few films in the next week. My appetite for the medium is pretty low. In the last month I've watch a handful of Benning docs and the Deadwood movie and that's it.

Just checking, is the counter right? When you say the 19th you mean 19th in the morning and not end of the 19th as we usually do? I'll be sure to send something whichever it is.

Sorry, I meant the end of 19th at Hawaii like we normally do. I sometime forget that I should select one day later in the countdown timer, because the deadline is one day later at noon for me. I fixed it.

15/16 now. PA is the last one.

I'll post the schedule right after PA sends me his pick. No changes from then on, even if that moment is today before the actual deadline.

First match starts Thursday.
