Year by Year Polls: 1945 (Nominations) CLOSED

Welcome to the Year-by-Year Poll!

This poll is for the year 1945.

These polls are fairly simple. We work our way through film history selecting a different year each time, and you list your top films from the given year. Depending on the number of voters, the poll usually produces a list of around 50-90 films and is a great way of finding recommendations. Lots of people will also list other films outside their top 20 as honorable mentions or runners-up.

The Rules

- You can vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 films.

- Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies, and TV mini-series are all eligible, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

- We use IMDb dates for consistency, so a title should be listed on IMDb as 1945.

- Your ballot can be either ranked or unranked. For ranked ballots, you must use a numbered list. If I don't understand what your intention was, your ballot may be counted differently from what you expected. Edited to add: If you don't use a numbered list nor specify that your ballot is unranked, I will send you a private message to ask what you meant. So, to make this easier, please either number your list or say if it is unranked.

- IMPORTANT: Along with a list of the titles from 1945, please include a separate list (in the same post) of bare IMDb urls for the same films. Your ballot will be deemed disqualified if the IMDb urls are not included.

The Scoring

For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive a number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each succeeding title receiving one fewer point. So the top title on a list of 20 films will receive 20 points, the next 19 points, and so on. If the list has only 10 films, the top title will receive 10 points, the next one 9, and so on. If there are 5 films on the list, the top film will receive 5 points, the next one 4, etc. You get the idea.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot if it had been ranked. So, for example, if there are 20 films on the ballot, this means each one would receive 10.5 points.

Watchin 1945 since this weekend, my plan is to watch all the movies that are more on one official list. But it seems not achievable, because there seem to be no english or german subitles to 'La vida en un hilo'. Well I'm doing my best, and I'm planning to also watch as many movies on 1 official list as possible.

I rated 65 titles on IMDB with an average of 5,89 (which makes it ca #30 of all years).
9 got a rating of 8 or higher (love).
22 got a rating of 7 or higher (strong like).
42 got a rating of 6 or higher (like).

The list as it stands now is:

1. Les enfants du paradis
2. Mildred Pierce
3. Brief Encounter
4. Two O'Clock Courage
5. The Clock
6. Fram för lilla Märta eller På livets ödesvägar
7. Voice of the Whistler
8. The Lost Weekend
9. Fallen Angel
10. Hangover Square
11. Detour
12. Scarlet Street
13. Tora no o wo fumu otokotachi
14. My Name Is Julia Ross
15. Lady on a Train
16. Anchors Aweigh
17. Les dames du Bois de Boulogne
18. Jasenovac
19. Conflict
20. Le vampire

Honorable Mentions:The Southerner, Spellbound, Tree Grows in Brooklyn, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Great Flamarion, Die letzte Chance, Strange Illusion, And Then There Were None, Leave Her to Heaven, Jealousy, The Lady Confesses, Road to Utopia, The Scarlet Clue

It is tempting to call 1945 one of the weakest years in cinema history, but it may be more accurate to say that it was one of the poorest in terms of production. It is really hard to degrade the year of Children of Paradise, arguably the greatest French film ever made, and more incredible coming out of Nazi Occupied France. And surprisingly, my top spots are fairly strong.

Edit: When this poll started I only had a top 15 of great (or reasonably close to great) films. This was not too surprising as I had only seen 51 films, making it the year I had seen the least amount of films from (only tied with 1943, *counting from 1920). I decided to do something about it, caught 14 additional films, and managed, with the last 2 films, to finally finish my top 20, and even kick off the not so great film.

1. Les Enfants du paradis/ Children of Paradise (1945, Marcel Carne`) 10/10
2. Roma, città aperta / Rome, Open City (1945, Roberto Rossellini) 9/10
3. Dead of Night (1945, Alberto Cavalcanti & Charles Crichton)
4. Les dames du Bois de Boulogne (1945, Robert Bresson)
5. Scarlet Street (1945, Fritz Lang) 8.5/10
6. Mildred Pierce (1945, Michael Curtiz)
7. Spellbound (1945, Alfred Hitchcock)
8. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945, Elia Kazan)
9. Brief Encounter (1945, David Lean) 8/10
10. Naïs (1945, Raymond Leboursier)

11. The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945, Albert Lewin)
12. Berlin / The Fall of Berlin (1945, Yuli Raizman) 8/10
13. Le miserie del Signor Travet / The Miseries of Mr. Travet (Mario Soldati)
14. Kungliga patrasket / The Royal Rabble(1945, Hasse Ekman)
15. And Then There Were None (1945, René Clair)
16. The Valley of Decision (1945, Tay Garnett)
17. Nessuno torna indietro / Responsibility Comes Back (1945, Alessandro Blasetti)
18. The Clock (1945, Vincente Minnelli)
19. Quartieri alti / In High Places (1945, Mario Soldati) 7.5-8/10
20. Hangover Square (1945, John Brahm)

These were my 14 new viewings:

Naïs (1945, Raymond Leboursier) 8/10
Berlin / The Fall of Berlin (1945, Yuli Raizman) 8/10
Le miserie del Signor Travet / The Miseries of Mr. Travet (Mario Soldati) 8/10
Kungliga patrasket / The Royal Rabble(1945, Hasse Ekman) 8/10
The Clock (1945, Vincente Minnelli) 8/10
Quartieri alti / In High Places (Mario Soldati) 7.5-8/10
Domingo de carnaval / Carnival Sunday (Edgar Neville) 7/10
Le père Chopin (Fyodor Otsep) 7/10
Två människor / Two People (Carl Theodor Dreyer) 6/10
Pobeda na Pravoberezhnoy Ukraine / Victoria in Ukraine (1945, Aleksandr Dovzhenko, Yuliya Solntseva) 6/10
Fram för lilla Märta eller På livets ödesvägar (Hasse Ekman) 5.5-6/10
Momotarô: Umi no shinpei / Momotaro's Divine Sea Warriors (1945, Mitsuyo Seo) 5/10

A great year for noir.

1. Rome, Open City
2. The Picture of Dorian Gray
3. The Lost Weekend
4. Spellbound
5. Detour
6. Hangover Square
7. The Body Snatcher
8. I Know Where I’m Going
9. Mildred Pierce
10. Scarlet Street
11. Leave Her to Heaven
12. Isle of the Dead

Normally, this is where I would mention what were the worst movies I saw from 1945, but I don't think I've seen a single bad movie from that year. Know Your Enemy - Japan was kind of racist, but I still thought it was skillful filmmaking.

It has been a while (the last one was 1925, held in August 2018), but that's because all the years in that decade were polled by us or by our predecessor poll on IMDb within the time that I've been keeping records of.

I expect that we will eventually go back and re-poll those years, but there won't necessarily be a Year by Year Poll for any 1920s year held this year.

OK. I thought we'd covered all the years by now if we include the CFB polls so we would be "free" to choose, so to speak.

Yeah, I know. For reason the film was never released (in theaters/VHS/DVD) or broadcasted on TV here. No Spanish fansubs available either and not even English subs (which I especially appreciate for this kind of movies). I think I'll wait, thanks.

There are region 1/A DVDs and BDs of that film and it looks like the BD does have English subs. I really wasn't aware of it until I started looking at this year for the poll - guess it's remained a semi-obscure film. George Marshall isn't exactly a cult director and while MacMurray I suppose has a fanbase it's probably not that large - no surprise that in this day and age it wouldn't have an international release digitally any more than it did in the old days. Not something I'm probably going to get to in time for the poll myself in any case though it does look at least a little interesting.

I've decided to extend this poll for another week, to Sunday, March 29. This will give people a little more time to watch films from this year (or, perhaps, from one of the years we will be polling in the future).

Please note that the deadline will still be on Sunday morning in the U.S. (If you are outside the North American time zones, please check a time zone map to confirm your deadline.)

It is OK - 5/10 - pleasant enough & Fred as genial as ever....but overall just short of the level I'd give an HM to. But I'm a hard marker...... :D

HMs: THE ROAD TO UTOPIA; MY NAME IS JULIA ROSS; LADY ON A TRAIN; A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN; SCARLET STREET; CLUB HAVANA; DIVORCE; AND THEN THERE WERE NONE and LES ENFANTS DU PARADIS

Predictions? I'm guessing the Carne, although Lean's enduring stiff upper lip romance, the horror portmanteau, MILDRED, the Rossellini, The Wilder, the Hitch and Stahl's gorgeous technicolour noir will all place highly

Obscurities?

I'M A CIVILIAN HERE MYSELF is an amusing army training film about being demobbed, with Robert Benchley and a bit from Ava Gardner,

HIGH POWERED is a jolly B about a lady run lunchwagon serving construction workers on high rises.

If i tell you LATIN QUARTER is about a mad sculptor and features young Joan Greenwood as his model... that should probably be enough....

KEEP YOUR POWDER DRY - Lana joins the WACS and fills out her uniform with aplomb....

Not exactly obscure - but certainly not getting the love it should - this rather wonderful romance (not nearly as torrid as the poster suggests!)
