ICMForum's Favourite Movies 2020 Edition NOMINATIONS Due Mar 25

#1

Post by PeacefulAnarchy »

Deadline: midnight PST Wed March 25, 2020 (8AM GMT March 26).
Once again it's time for the forum's favourite films (includes shorts, docs as well) list.

Rules:
1) Make a list of your favorite films (Films include feature length films, short films, documentaries, mini-series, whatever has an entry on IMDB, except TV series no video games either.).
You can submit a list in one of three ways:
1. Imdb list
2. ICM list
3. List of imdb urls if you can't make an imdb list.
Make sure your (imdb/icm) list is public!

2) There is no maximum number of films, but each film on your list must only be listed once. Your list should have at least 10 films in it.

3) Submit a link to your IMDB/ICM list here, by midnight PST March 25, 2020 (8AM GMT March 26). I will download all lists at the deadline, so feel free to submit an incomplete list and keep editing your list until the deadline.

4) I will assume your list is RANKED unless you specify otherwise.
Other than a ranked list you can submit your list in one of the following ways:
- Unranked: All films get the same number of points (Pts are determined by the length of your list, same amount of total points as if the list had been ranked).
- Partially ranked: Top X is ranked, rest is unranked
- Group ranked: You have to specify the groups that go together, all films in the group get the same number of points. (eg: 11-20, 21-30, 31-50, 51-100)

Last year the point system was Points=100*(0.5)^((R-1)/175) I'll be using the same this year. Here's some example values for the less mathematically inclined:

Some helpful tools for making an imdb list:
Imdb Helper: This Greasemonkey ViolentMonkey script lets you paste either movie titles or imdb urls all together and will search them in order, saving you from having to cut and paste one by one.
Text Linky A firefox addon that lets you highlight multiple links and copy all the urls together at once. Useful if you've already got an existing list on imdb you want to copy, or for copying advanced search results (like all movies you've rated above 9). LinkClump if you use chrome.

Here is my ranked list https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/my+f ... es/zzzorf/
As of writing it is still the 600 I submitted last year but I will update it leading up to the deadline to correspond with my Flickchart order and bring it up to 1001 films (I try to make my lists the same size as the final list if I have enough movies)

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Up to 550 now, depending on what happens the next month I might be throwing another 25 on there.
For handier tips formats: there's also a Letterboxd version and one with screencaps, reviews etc

seen tons of movies since the last poll, it was quite an effort to update the list. starting to watch unseen movies with the most official lists, so I expect to know more movies than in the last polls. looking forward to it.

One clarification from me - I've ranked the individual episodes of Kieslowski's Dekalog as standalone works. Several of the episodes are in my list. Is this OK?

a) Are you posting in the right thread? This is the Forum's Favourite Films, not DTC
b) What do you mean by a poll asking people what they think of the result? What would the options be?

Yeah this is the right thread.

How about this:
“How satisfied are you the results of this poll?”
Very satisfied
Somewhat satisfied
Neither satisfied nor unsatisfied
Somewhat unsatisfied
Very unsatisfied

Satisfied on what basis ? The poll is meant to represent the community's taste... as long as we agree on the method, it can't really fail to do so. Unless you mean for this to be a referendum on whether one finds the forum's general taste to be "good", but that seems nonsensical to me.

Not really a referendum on the forum’s taste, but a referendum on the list itself. Is it of good quality, does it adequately represent the diverse viewpoints of forum members, how does it stack up against different lists of similar size like TSPDT or newspaper top 1000s?

How does it stack up by what criteria ? What does "good quality" even mean here ? All it aims to do is to represent the community's taste... and that discussion would be all about the process used to achieve that, not about the results.

It's fine, though I don't know that you'll get much support on that, besides the two that were released as films.

Well it’s subjective isn’t it? And individuals can answer at their own discretion. Isn’t that the point of the poll? If you don’t have your own view about what constitutes good quality with regard to a list of films, don’t vote.

I agree it's subjective... so you just want people to vote on how much they like the results, ie how well their favorites did ? I just don't really see the point. "You guys agree with me, therefore this poll is great !" "You guys have different taste than me, therefore this poll sucks !" is that the idea ?

Not at all. You seem really set on shooting this down. I’m not that invested in this idea, I just thought it might be useful and provide some perspective. Here’s an example (but not the only example!) of why I suggested this: if you look at last years list, the results skew heavily towards films everyone has seen, and that is for obvious reasons. It also means that even though the list is 1000 films long, somebody who brings an interesting or distinctive perspective like Onderhond still gets almost no representation. I think this community does have fanatastic diversity in terms of taste, but this list tends not to capture that.

I don't want to shoot anything down really, I just think "are you satisfied with the polls result" is not really the question you want to ask, and it's a very vague question. The question is "what is the best methodology for this poll ?", and I do find that interesting, but I'm curious what the alternatives are.

That list with everybody’s top 50 favourites is a lot more promising, if that was being done I’d definitely prepare something legitimate.

I agree with teproc's sentiments; I don't disagree with the idea of a poll, I'm just rather confused as to it's purpose/method.

Are you saying that with the list in it's current format, you don't submit something legitimate? Or am I misinterpreting your statement? Yes, there's a certain amount of groupthink in that the more widely-seen films will have a better chance than the lesser-seen films. Distinctive individual preferences will fall by the wayside as more users participate in the poll by nature, and I don't see any problem with that. I'm not going to look at this list and see what individual users like, I'll take this list as a broad representation of the overall taste of this forum. I can look at the individual ballots for those users whose taste is similar to mine (which I do when someone does that affinity calculation, I forget who), or in other lists that are constructed to allow more unique tastes to shine through (such as hidden gems or dtc).
