Given the increases for Polanski, Allen and Eastwood, and the drops for female directors, I think we can say #metoo isn't influencing things very much on this poll.

Who said something about Melville beating out the new wave?

(Should have been JLG though)

Still one of the greatest nations for film, just not a top 5 contender.
What countries hold the top 5 spots in your opinion?
Would have to think about think more than I’m going to now but:
Germany, Japan, USA, China/HK/Taiwan, and I’ve not seen enough but I suspect India would ultimately be in there. There are 2 or 3 other contenders I might put ahead of France.

@blocho
https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/ce+qui+nous+lie/
I’d say that one pretty much exemplifies it. Sydney has “the largest French film festival outside France” but I never go because 95% of the program is this sort of crap.
I would add that Poland, Italy, Czech are all strong contenders too.

Omg, Rohmer defied the Francopolypse and actually rose 9 spots. That's surprising.

Loving these neologisms, haahaa... ''Francopolypse'', ''Francogeddon'', etc...

I might have to put together a ranked or tiered list next year. I was too lazy and pressed for time to do so this time around, unfortunately.

Fascinating discussion on Fellini as well. Thanks to those who contributed to that. I've only seen some of his later work and this has proved a tantalising exchange.
That's all, folks!

Well, that's because it's not anything about France happening, but against artsy European filmmakers. Fassbinder dropped, the Italians dropped, etc. Melville is an auteur, but he made genre films, so he's fine.

On that note, I'd be surprised if Bergman retained the top spot.
Can't believe nobody else noticed this until you did. More than that, it is filmmakers who employ less conventional narrative structures that have suffered the most.

Not surprising to me. There is a huge Rohmer mafia here that has been giving steam over the past few years (same with Fassbinder). I actually thought he might climb into the top 10.

Lesser sung artsy filmmakers with large bodies of work have tended to pick up followings, here (Naruse and other Japanese filmmakers included), and the 500<400 poll has been one of several ongoing ones that have contributed to their rise.

Planning to see F For Fake, let‘s see if Well‘s will improve
on my list because of it.

I made notes during this poll of directors I missed put on my list, these will be on it next time I update:

Douglas sirk
Zemeckis
Yimou zhang
mizoguchi
Anderson
Kobayashi
Wajda

Wajda qualifies because I just saw Ashes and Diamonds a few
seconds ago. Great cinematography but I didn‘t understand much of the plot, mostly I guess because I was high on meds. Was his third movie, therefore I can put him on the list. Canal was great, but not that great some people try to make it. It‘s mostly the great cinematography. I also saw Danton years ago and liked it.

QT above OW? Astonishing. No, I guess not given the list as a whole.

I think at this point I need to remove Tarantino from my list; didn't remember that he was still on it actually. Haven't liked any of his work this century all that much apart from Django, and I didn't love that. I guess he's on it for the first three films but really those aren't enough to make up for his subsequent career. He and Tim Burton are probably going to be the first two to go when (I really should say if) I re-do my list this year. Oh wait Burton isn't on my list - maybe I'm not as dumb or uncritical as I thought I was. Woody Allen though why the fuck is he there.

Hey Allen was great for at least 25 years and had nice comebacks too, but yeah...

QT is on my list, and unlike you I still think his work from this decade is great, but yeah, none on par with his early years, and I don't think any are in my top 20 of their respective years, sans Once Upon a Time, but that won't last too long.
