iCM Forum's Favorite Italian Movies
2nd edition
:circle: Results :circle:
Image

For the second time we chose our favorite Italian movies. The last time we did this was in 2015. That time it was a top 100, this time I extended it to a Top 200. Because the number of voters allowed for that. For consistency the half-life was kept at 50

Please feel free to discuss the list, the films, and any entries that you're happy or unhappy about, whether you submitted a list or not, but please try to be courteous when doing so. When quoting a post with images it's best if you remove the image unless it's directly relevant to what you're posting.

Wow, quite a number of absolute favourites showing up! Thrilled to see De Seta and Benvenuti being represented with such marvellous and distinct films.

Brunello Rondi's 'Il demonio' looks interesting as well. That's a new one to me and I'm pleased to discover it.
That's all, folks!

I'm keeping an eyeball on these results... didn't submit a list since 99% of the Italian films I've seen to date are either gialli or cannibal films and I didn't think they'd be well received en masse. I can probably use the results here to formulate a decent watch list for Italy though.

Happy that there were enough ballots to generate a list of 200 - 100 seems pretty paltry for a country with the cinematic history that Italy has. And glad to see these early films, most of which I've heard of but few of which I've seen. Certainly an interesting mix of genre and arthouse fare thus far though I'm not hopeful that my big genre find of the last few years, Antonio Margheriti, will place anything here.

I'm curious what's your favorite Antonio Margheriti movie or which one would you recommend?

I'm curious what's your favorite Antonio Margheriti movie or which one would you recommend?
I love his science fiction work the most. It's all schlocky, no question, but IMO no more so than many spaghetti westerns or horror films that are going to show up here. And Margheriti did credible work on some westerns and horror or giallo films also. He never really became a big name like Leone, Bava or Argento, and so his films are mostly low-budget and few have gotten much recognition. And very few are official checks which certainly impacts his influence here :( . Top 5:

1. Il mondo di Yor (1983) (SF-barbarian fantasy)
2. I criminali della galassia (1966) (SF)***
3. Danza macabra (1964) (horror)
4. Space Men (1960) (SF)
5. E Dio disse a Caino... (1970) (western)

***The first part of the so-called "Gamma Quadrilogy", all released in 1966 and all revolving around the space station "Gamma". I think you have to like the particular style - "mod" gets used a lot, I'm not sure that's it - that is also seen in films like The Green Slime. Really bright colors, lots of detailed though typically quite fake-looking models, goofy costumes. I dunno, I love this stuff.

Image

But I guess I get why many don't, science fiction maybe ages the worst in the eyes of many given it's reliance of FX, and our SF lists have undervalued older films also IMO. Anyway I'm not pushing Margheriti as an all-time great, more as a really fun and kind of weird genre filmmaker who made pretty cool stuff with few resources.

I've never heard of Stridulum before, but apparently both John Huston and Sam Peckinpah are in the cast?!?! I can't even imagine.

And Franco Nero as Jesus, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shelley Winters, Glenn Ford, Mel Ferrer...I've know about it for a while just because of the crazy cast, think somebody was a fan of it back on IMDb Classics Board days. I don't get the feeling I'm going to love it but I feel like I have to see it.

A bunch of my faves are appearing (l)
Saw this yesterday. Third film I've seen of the Lina Wertmüller's directing + Giancarlo Giannini acting combo and the weakest of the three (I still enjoyed it though, but I wouldn't put it on my list). I prefer Love & Anarchy and The Last Seduction of Mimi.

I've voted for Stridulum in probably over a dozen various forum polls, but this is the first time it's ever made a final list.

I guess that Once Upon a Time in America is Italian because it was directed by Sergio Leone....

Strange list. I guess Italian cinema means International arthouse, combined with Spaghetti westerns and Italian horror with a sprinkling of violent crime and farce mixed in.

I do like a lot of these films even though I only voted for 36. Especially happy to have helped give Lamerica a +199 push and Respiro a +424, and I'm Not Scared a +470 push with my high rankings. All touched my southern Italian roots (I'm half Sicilian) and are very well made, poignant films. I also liked Ceasar Must Die and Caro Diario quite a bit, though both lost a little traction in this poll.
