For those who are interested, here's an interesting interview with Antonioni about his film The Passenger that also begins by referencing The Stranger (another film on the list):

BFI is also doing a tribute to Fellini this month, too: https://www.bfi.org.uk/news-opinion/sig ... laborators

The top 4 are obvious. The order...based on where the directors seem to be headed in their other top 50 entrees, I'm going to guess...

4. Ladre di biciclette

Oh and how did I miss voting for L'avventura? It has been a long time admittedly but I should have at least had it on the unranked part of my list. And I should watch it again.

I certainly won't complain that I was wrong in my predictions. Second poll I think where my #1 has mirrored the poll winner. Yay!

Thanks Lonewolf!

I'm curious if the jump up for the two came from people who excluded them last time, but included them this time seeing them being on the list last edition.

It's clear in which decade we think the peak of Italian cinema lays, with the 50s leading up to that peak and the 70s as the flow out.

I don't think there is any other poll were there are so many directors with so much movies in the results. That probably says something about Italian cinema too.

Pretty meh top 10, but I’m happy with how much horror/gialli ended up in the list. Seen 110/200.

Leone was very popular in the IMDb circles that I traveled in way back in the day, so I think the rise is more due to the new users who have joined the forum since the IMDb message boards imploded. Myself included - though I only had C'era on my ballot myself.

The eclectic mix of genre and arthouse is a good representation of italian cinema.

Movies seen: 33/200 (16.5%)
Movies I voted for: 15/200 (7.5%) (75% of my list of 20)
Highest movie unseen: #4 8½ (1963)
Highest favourite: #333 Tiger Boy (2012) (only favourite on the full list)
Highest dislike: #165 Respiro (2002) (only dislike on the full list)
Highest (non-favourite) movie I voted for: #1 C'era una volta il West [Once Upon a Time in the West] (1968)
Highest (non-dislike) movie seen I didn't vote for: #10 L'eclisse [The Eclipse] (1962)
Position of my #1: #333 Tiger Boy (2002)
My highest vote that didn't make the list: #333 Tiger Boy (my #1)

My other four no-shows were
#297 Beauty (2014) (#17)
#384 La cotta [The Crush] (1967) (#12)
#396 Baeus (1987) (#14)
#435 Al buio [In the Dark] (2005) (#20)

Still a lot to see, and I'm glad the list was expanded in size this time. Still, compared to other countries with similar amounts of output/critical acclaim, Italian films generally leave me cold, so beyond the top 200 I'm not likely to explore this too much.

I‘m at 53/200. Hope to improve on this a bit.

Martin Eden at #202 seems quite high for a new film that hasn't been seen by many people. How many voters did we have for that one Loneowolf? If you don't mind checking.

Thanks, Lonewolf.

Seen 141/200 with I Am Love at #65 the highest unseen. I’m certainly guilty of voting for multiple movies by several directors (my top 4, for example, being from Antonioni). I also agree that Italy in the 60s was fantastic.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Sorry for the late reply. Been busy. Of course I can check that. It has 4 voters.

Fabulous list. Didn't think all the campy horror flicks and spaghetti westerns would make the list.

82/200 for me ... generally fairly happy with how my picks did. And some that did well that I just can't quite get into, like 8 1/2 and L'eclisse. Highest unseen is #27 Death in Venice, which is actually on my PVR right now (and eligible for the Oscar challenge!), so very likely I'll see that in the next couple weeks.
