Mario, shouldn't it be:

I saw Luna Papa years ago, but where you say Kusturica I would say Fellini (or Daneliya to name someone closer) as well.
I haven't seen any films by Daneliya yet, but I'm curious to hear what you mean by Fellini. From what I've seen and remember, his closest film in term of style would be Juliet of the Spirits, or maybe you're thinking about something else?

Amarcord (you can read some reviews and they fit perfectly here!), but in general all his carnivalesque movies after 8 1/2.

Given how poorly Hungary is doing, if it doesn't make it this will be the first time it loses in the first round!
It also means that for either Portugal or Australia (or both if Tajikstan suddenly plummets) will finally make it past the first round after three previous failed attempts.

My favourite round so far. All 4 movies were very strong contenders, I wish we didn't have to vote two out.

1. Last Cab to Darwin - I watched this movie last year as part of my personal challenge on Facebook, taking the top spot in my seeding round. I loved the simplicity of the movie. The story was straightforward and allowed the actors to portray the emotion needed. 10/10
2. Luna Papa - This movie was a real fun ride. The antics that surrounded their search for the father were great and in amongst it we had the seriousness of their plight with the town and the brothers illness. It had great touches to with the potential wedding. Even the surrealism parts didn't seem to faze me too much. 8/10
3. Egy erkölcsös éjszaka - For the beginning of this movie I wasn't really sure if I was going to like this one but as it progressed I started to get right into it. Yeah it was far from perfect but it never tried to be. The mother was well played and you could feel how her presence that night would affect some of the girls in the future. 7/10
4. Os Verdes Anos - Not overly sure how I feel about this one. The movie was well shot, acted and all the like, and the story, a relatively simple one, was well handled. Yet I still find myself not overly enjoying it as a whole, even if I did like it. And while I slightly understand the ending it doesn't really get explained enough to really hit home. Still I did find enough in it to rate it well. 7/10

Overall, a good round.

1. Last Cab to Darwin - 7.6
2. Os Verdes Anos [The Green Years] - 7.4
3. Luna Papa [Moon Father] - 7.0
4. Egy erkölcsos éjszaka [A Very Moral Night] - 6.6

Saw the Portuguese film a few years ago and don't remember much from it. Hungarian film was not bad, just kind of tepid, despite the flashy subject matter. Interesting historical piece, at least, and the Landlady was good. The Tajik film was up and down, and it reminds me of what I think a Kusturica film is like (having only seen Dolly Bell), but I didn't see any connection with Fellini (haven't seen anything post-La dolce vita though). I liked the music and some of the scenes (the cow at the wedding, for example), but other parts felt forced, and the reliance on the idiot savant trope was ... meh. The Australian film was a bit saccharine, but overall solid. Good cinematography, okay characters, an interesting story (based on a true event), and decent acting. The best part of the film was Polly, so I was sad to learn that the actress died suddenly last year at the age of 52.

Thanks to all the managers. :)

1 Portugal - Os Verdes Anos
2 Tajikistan - Luna Papa
3 Hungary - Egy erkölcsös éjszaka
4 Australia - Last Cab to Darwin

I watched Last Cab to Darwin to complete this group. Not impressed, but not bad, it could at the same level as the Hungarian submission and one step below the other two.

That should settle it. Portugal beats Australia (and Iran and Korea) to not being the only 2nd-tier-ish country always losing in R1

1. 'Os Verdes Anos' - 9.5 or 10/10
2. 'Luna Papa' - 9/10
3. 'Egy erkölcsös éjszaka' - 7.5/10
4. 'Last Cab to Darwin' - 7/10

Top two for me are in the region of masterpieces, but I enjoyed all four films quite a bit. A strong and rewarding round.

Thanks to the managers!

Indeed. With their wins this season Portugal and Iran finally claim victory, and Australia is the last remaining country to have participated in all 4 seasons and never advance past the first round (and it was my first choice in 3 of its 4 matches).
Of countries that participated in 3 seasons, Argentina, Thailand, South Korea, and Netherlands have all failed to advance to the second round, with Senegal finally advancing this season.

Unrelated, but from the first 4 matches so far, only 2 of my 8 top-two choices have advanced, and coincidentally they were both the films I'd seen before the start of the season (Senegal & Portugal).

Right, Iran also. Just Korea & Australia stuck now. Well and others like Argentina and the Dutch. But none of them qualified this year. So Australia is indeed in the league of its own. Our resident Australians must be so proud.

Wow Portugal got so much late game it nearly put Tajiks in the hospital.

What has been nominated in the past? I would suggest some de Heer since he's arguably our very finest director. I was going to nominate Alexandra's Project or The Quiet Room myself if I ended up managing Australia.

4th attempt - 8/10 and back to first

yeah I have an upndown history with Australia. the movies I voted for had a run at taking the spot in the next round.

I like Last Cab to Darwin, but The Green Years is one of my very favourite and Luna Papa has its charm also. So it is really a pity that Australia still fail to advance this time.
