Finally, the top 25 is yielding a better ratio of interesting "underrated" films, but the majority of the films on this list are "guilty pleasures" more than underrated.
Enemy (#47) is the highest ranked film on this list so far that I've voted for, and I feel no guilt about liking that movie :folded: :D
I also voted for a couple outside the top 25 without any "guilt," but in general the list beyond #25 is rather uninspiring to me

The Top 25 so far has been disappointing. It's reverting to basic arthouse cinema that's already criminally overrepresented in official lists. Films like The Assassin deserve their trashing, for the incredible waste of potential that they are.
The Assassin made my list at #116, but is much better than its 6.3 imdb score for its cinematography alone. And though we often have the same complaints about lists generated on this forum, our own sense of what makes for great cinema is wildly different aside from a few corollaries.

I love Hou's later films for their sense of style and beautiful cinematography, but the aspect ratio nonsense in The Assassin was a complete eyesore. That film was one of the biggest disappointments of the past decade for me. The only beautiful part of that film is the poster, which is gorgeous.

To me, "arthouse"cinema, especially post 1985 arthouse cinema, is among the most "underrated" by the movie gong public (often because it approaches and works with the medium in a way that doesn't interest the average film watcher), and while the Assassin came out near the bottom of my submission list of 126, it's one of less than 10 of mine that has made it to this user list.

The other kinds of films that tend to get underrated are controversial ones that somehow offends (usually due to something sexual) a large enough audience that their ratings suffer.

An overrated movies poll would be great. Would have had in my top 10
The Usual Suspects
V for Vendetta
300
Scott Pilgrim vs the World
Hot Fuzz
Inception
Requiem for a Dream
The Legend of Tarzan
La vita é bella
Braveheart
Into the Wild

and than a few unranked (but some with low numbers i need to rewatch because likely i didn't get them (Magnolia, The Tree of Life, Boogie Nights, Melancholia ...) or i can appreciate but decided it's nothing for me (Amelie)

Showgirls i need to watch. Only God Forgives is a good movie, but didn't make my list because it's not a favourite of me. I need to watch that movie again, but it's not the easiest one to watch, but it belongs to this list certainly.

There are a handful of films on this list that I would've nominated for a 'Most Overrated' poll (including the spoilered piece of crap :whistling: ). There's quite a few more that I actually like a lot but don't consider underrated at all (including some I reluctantly voted for), so it is quite a weird mix but I guess it depends on the opinions we're exposed to. The only negative opinion of the film you mentioned that I've actually come across is my own so lol.

I thought it was okay, not total crap or anything - definitely different and interesting, but for an experimental film from the director, I greatly prefer
SpoilerShow
Knight of Cups
while
SpoilerShow
The Thin Red Line and especially Badlands
are far superior films from the director to my mind. Whatever. It's mostly just going to be weird having a top 50 TSP 21C film maybe top a poll like this.

Container is a film that fits the mold I think, but maybe not enough people here have seen that one. I might have expected Lost River here too, but Top 5 would be a bit much I think.

Nice to see 'The Addiction', 'Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans' and 'The Forbidden Room' show up. Three offbeat and wackily compelling films that add weirdness and wonderfulness to this list.

As I mentioned upthread, I'm almost certain that

SpoilerShow

also being in the mix. That leaves one which for some reason I'm not getting.

I only voted for the third of those, but agreed. I think the best that can be said about this list is that it does indeed contain plenty of "offbeat" and strange films that don't really have wide general audience appeal. A lot of them are films I don't like personally, or don't like enough to be here, and the list is WAAAAYYY too focused on the last couple of decades, but it is nice to see some of these films that are only on a couple of official lists and really not part of the canon (yet, anyway) showing up here. Though I continue to wonder at the taste for Refn in particular, as empty a filmmaker as ever lived, the Michael Bay of the arthouse IMO.

The same could be said for Nils Winding-Refn. With a tip of my hat to OldAle1: "the Michael Bay of Arthouse." But then I might add DePalma to the list of vacuous plagiarizers, as well.

From Refn, I think I've only seen 'Drive'. Definitely style over substance there but I guess I liked it well enough, without being in raptures.

It would have been nice to have more representation from earlier decades, that's for sure. I was rather pleased to see 'A Farewell to Arms' show up and give the list at least a flavour of the '30s.

Agree 1000%. The only film of his I like in any way is Valhalla Rising... can't say I would go out of my way to avoid him, as I would directors like Bay or Emmerich, but he's very close to that territory.

While I did expect for various reasons there to be many movies from this decade (or to take it broader, this century) to be on this list, I'm also dissapointed by how completely dominated the list is by this decade/century.

Nothing more than a firm sign that older decades are way overrated tehe
Or the strange reverse recency bias many film fans seem to have.

I'm not a big Refn supporter (I like some of his films, but not the ones with the widest support), but as someone who finds very little worthwhile substance in cinema I am glad to defend style over substance. At least that least you with style, instead of .. well, nothing.

I think this is pretty easily explained by the fact that people who watch older movies are a self-selcting audience, and they're mostly watching movies that have furthermore been pre-selected as the most appreciated of their time. It does not work everytime (clearly you are someone who will watch older films but your tastes are completely in disagreement with most of the "film canon"), but it explains much higher averages for these films. So when your criteria for overrated relies on IMDB scores, the list naturally skews more recent.

Still at the very bottom! :D

Even so, I like this list a lot better than other forum lists. Quite a few films with decent ratings for me (though usually not enough of a scoring difference for me to consider them underrated).

Thanks for hosting, Lonewolf.

At least Shyamalan and De Palma got some love. Boo Malick and Coppola!

Links to lists

:ICM: Top 100
:ICM: Complete List
:imdb: Top 100
:imdb: Complete List

A nuance about the complete list: more than any list this been a real "Ain't Nobody's Blues But My Own" one; out of the total of 3055 movies 2386 ones only got 1 vote. And only 244 movies received 3 votes or more.

Thanks for hosting, Lonewolf! That was quite fun. I haven't seen any of the top 5 and am particularly looking forward to Lonergan's 'Margaret'.

I think I've seen 21/100 so lots of underrated recent offerings still to dig into.
That's all, folks!
