Year-by-Year Polls: Looking back at 2019 (Nomination)

#1

Post by Rufus-T » January 5th, 2020, 5:06 pm

Happy 2019! Welcome to the Year-by-Year Poll looking back at 2019. It is time again 1) to bring on the new year, and 2) to celebrate the movies from the year just ended.

The Rules

The rule is slightly different from our usual poll. In addition to poll the films, we will include polls for the 4 acting categories (leading actor, leading actress, supporting actor, and supporting actress).

The eligible films are the following:

1) Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies and TV mini-series, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

2) Listed as 2019 according to IMDb

3) Listed according to IMDb prior to 2019 if the film released in 2019 in your country. These usually are 2018 films and sometimes 2017 films. If earlier than 2017 and I do not notice any 2019 release at any country, I may disqualify it unless you can justify the inclusion in your ballot. The Release Dates page at IMDb for the film provides information about the release dates in many countries, if you are not sure about the eligibility. Some prefer to include only films that listed as 2019 on IMDb. That is fine too. Great thing about these polls are that they are accumulation of different opinion and taste within the rules.

You may list up to 20 films for the film poll, no minimum number.

You may list up to 10 performances for each of the 4 acting categories. If you are not sure whether a performance is a leading or a supporting role, put it in the category you deem most fit. The split will consolidated later to the category with the most points follow by number of mentions and by higher ranked.

If you have an actor or actress in multiple films in your list, please list their performances for the different films at different slots since they are different performances.

Your ballot can be either ranked or unranked, but I will assume it's ranked unless otherwise stated. For ranked ballots it makes it easier if you use a numbered list.

Regarding IMDb links, since there may be many revision for some and that the poll includes the performance categories, I relax on this rule so you do not need to include the IMDb links as usual. You may if you want to. However, if the film you listed has another film with the same name, please distinguish it by including the director or a link or some other way. Otherwise, I will choose the one with the most IMDb votes.

The Scoring

For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive a number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each succeeding title receiving one fewer point. So the top title on a list of 20 films will receive 20 points, the next 19 points and so on. If the list has only 10 films, the top title will receive 10 points, the next one 9, and so on. If there are 5 films on the list, the top film will receive 5 points, the next one 4, well you get the idea.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot if it had been ranked. If there are 20 films on the ballot, this means each one would receive 10.5 points.

The scoring for the performances is the same as films except that the scoring is for lists up to 10 slots.

The Deadline

You may update your ballot at any time before the poll closes.

Don't worry too much if you have not seen enough films. You are still welcome to participate. The result turned out to be quite decent every year with enough participation. The poll may help you keep up to date the recent films. It helped me every year.

After this poll, we will return to our regular Year-by-Year poll with 1945, followed by 1935.

Thank you and happy listing, and let's generate another awesome year-end list!

Not the best year of the decade; can’t even come up with a top 10 yet. Still one or two movies I’m interested in that I’ll hopefully see before the deadline, though (Vitalina Varela, A Hidden Life, …)

1. Parasite
2. Joker
3. The Lighthouse
4. Ad Astra
5. Midsommar
6. The Irishman
7. Marriage Story

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Indeed, although I'm not sure if it will help that much. As a fan of Asian cinema, the best of 2019 is bound to hit me/us somewhere in the second part of 2020, possible 2021. I definitely won't get to 20 entries, but I'll play along with a Top 7 or 8.

I'm doing this strictly to IMDb/LB dates, because most (good) films open a year later in my country anyways, so the list would contain mostly 2018 titles if I went by premiere dates... This also means that I've only seen 18 films from this year. (I've also included Ben Rivers' 'Now, At Last!', as some sources puts it as 2018 and others as 2019. To my knowledge it only had like one screening in 2018.
The only big favorite is my #1, 2 & 3 are candidates. Hope to catch a few more titles before the poll closes.

1. Atlantique / Atlantics (Mati Diop)
2. Säsong / Ridge (John Skoog)
3. Now, At Last! (Ben Rivers)
4. Hvítur hvítur dagur / A White, White Day (Hlynur Pálmason)
5. In Dog Years (Sophy Romvari)
6. Gemini Man (Ang Lee)
7. Marriage Story (Noah Baumbach)
8. Ad Astra (James Gray)
9. Krabi, 2562 (Ben Rivers & Anocha Suwichakornpong)
10. Parasite (Bong Joon-Ho)
11. Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (QT)
12. Lapü (Juan Pablo Polanco & César Alejandro Jaimes)
13. Joker (Todd Phillips)
14. Glass (M. Night Shyamalan)
15. The Fall (Jonathan Glazer)

That's just IMDb doing some funky dates... It's from 2009, but you are probably aware of that. But sure, if we go strictly by IMDb dates then it's eligible  .
Solomon's Last Days In a Lonely Place also shows up as a 2019 film suddenly.
At one point we also had all Mani Kaul's 70's films being from 2018...

I'm really happy to see the beautiful and very well-extended deadline. This will be quite a battle for me. Only seen 18 films from 2019 so far (may include 2018 titles as outlined by rules, but I don't like to do that).

So far the only two I would consider placing on a final top 10, or even top 20 are The Lighthouse and Synonymes, but I have seen other great films to fill up lower spots for now like Varda by Agnes, Ordinary Love, Toy Store 4 and even the mini-series Good Omens.

Hope I will get the chance to see About Endlessness, Portrait of a Lady on Fire and A Hidden Life, which are my 3 most highly anticipated films of the year that was. Would be pretty snobby if I made a list without seeing them first.

Last year I was in a similar position and managed to catch up to most of the top spots on my watchlist, and put together a more than solid list. Let's hope history repeats itself.

I'll prob formulate a watch list of sorts for this year from the results as I have only seen 5 (but 2019 seems more promising than the output from other recent years imho)...

Climax released in certain countries (and played at festivals) in 2018, so that's why it's listed as such on IMDB, but you're in the U.S. I believe, and it wasn't released theatrically here until March 2019. I loved it so it's on my list as you can see.

I just saw this morning that the latest Makoto Shinkai film, Weathering with You (2019), is getting a surprisingly wide-ish release here in the states this weekend, as it is playing at a couple of local Regal theaters. I'll have to take advantage, and see if it can make my list.

Thanks Gruesome. I don't really pay attention to actual release dates, which probably matters more in a poll with films as recent as these.

Cinematic release in Germany. So if they premiered in 2019 you're good to go. See rule 3
Use imdb-date for everything else that wasn't in cinemas. Streaming etc

Climax and Under the Silver Lake was released in 2019 in many country, including the US. You can check the Release Date page for those films at IMDb for your country if you like to be sure for proper representation on your list.
