iCM Forum World Cup - Season 4 - Round 1 schedule

#1

Post by joachimt » November 29th, 2019, 11:44 am

Welcome to the schedule of iCM Forum World Cup - Season 4 - Round 1.
If you don't know what this is, you can find everything about the World Cup here.

Rules in the group phase:
- You must watch all 4 films of a match before you vote.
- To vote, rank the 4 films from most favorite to least favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)
- The top 2 of each group will proceed to the next round.
The winners of the match will be decided using these rules:
  • Ranked by highest average ranking (= lowest number).
  • In case of a tie between two movies, head-to-head determines the winner (how many people thought A>B and how many thought B>A).
  • In case there's still a tie after the previous rule or there is a tie between three or four movies, most #1-votes determines the winner.
  • Still a tie? Fewest #4-votes determines the winner.
  • Still a tie? The match will have a 3 day extension (except when the tie is only between #3 and #4).
  • Same rules apply to determine second place, of course.
- Don't vote in this thread. Each match will have its own thread according to the schedule.

I've seen 3/32.
Only 2 films above 400 checks is very impressive, I'm glad to see managers went beyond the usual suspects for their respective countries.

Interesting, I've only seen 8.
And Gosh, my country is competing with Germany and USA. I guess I can surrender now. Who can win over Trump and Merkel?

I've only seen 4 of the 32. A few of the picks are already on my watchlist but there are lots I haven't heard of before. Really looking forward to watching all of these films. Good luck everyone!

After some WC fatigue from season 3, I think I'm properly excited now.

Seen 2 (Senegal - my pick & Portugal -former FOTW)
Already had 5 watchlisted (Slovenia, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Ukraine, India)
Excited to see a few more that I had heard of but hadn't tracked down yet (Canada & Estonia)
The rest are all complete unknowns to me.

Which group do people think is the group of death/most even/most unpredictable?
A, D, and F are the ones I feel most unsure about.

Interesting selections in the main. At least ten of these are films I'm highly looking forward to. I've only seen three of these so far - for two favourites and one dislike.

Good luck to all!
That's all, folks!

Yes, I'll have to vote against my own pick here, Mahanagar is a 10/10 for me personally.

I hope voters will enjoy the Swedish pic as something unusual at least. :D

Awesome that someone else went with a 'one-reeler' as well!

Of course H is the group of death: Three notable choices against my girl (0 votes in BBC poll, an irrefutable proof that the movie is extraordinary). :P

Congratulations to Peaceful and Lilarcor for picking vintage cinema.

Tip of the hat to you.

I've also only seen two. And only heard of eight.

Just noticed this now, but the copy I have and watched is only 147 minutes.

Imdb says this:
Runtime 2 hr 27 min (147 min) (Netherlands)
2 hr 37 min (157 min) (USA)
2 hr 30 min (150 min) (Berlin) (West Germany)

Now I'm curious where those missing 10 minutes are (or if it's just an error for the US runtime).

Seen 10 of 32, all of them between extremely good and outstanding for me. I look forward to seeing the rest (and rewatching ten really good films)!

I have seen 0/32, which is why I was pushing for fewer films/match.

But, I'm glad the entire schedule is posted early and in advance, so I can start in prioritizing what to watch. Also, the Travel the World challenge next month will really help.

Probably the difference between PAL vs NTSC - 25 vs 24 frames per second.

I've seen 3 before today and I watched three more once the schedule was released. Each film I watched today had moments that made me sleepy, so I think I will avoid trying to binge watch them all in a short time frame.

I'm a little disappointed that Mahanagar was chosen because Satyajit Ray has a bunch of great films under 400 checks. Although I still enjoyed Mahanagar so the other films in that group have to be great in order for me not to rank Mahanagar #1 or #2.

Also, match 1A and 1B won't overlap because of Christmas, so we start a little bit slower than the rest of the matches where there is 1.5 weeks overlap.
The whole schedule of round 1 lasts 5.33 months, so you have an average of 6 movies to watch each month to fully participate.

Mario seems to be in a hurry. I just noticed you checked 8 titles from this season within two days.

In case I end up being arrested or put to mental hospital, I have to check off everything on time so I won't lose the perfect participation.

I just watched Midvinterblot and IMDB at the bottom of the page always recommends similar titles. This time for Midvinterblot the similar titles were Why Shoot the Teacher?, Respiro, Ayer Maravilla Fui , Risttuules , Luna Papa etc
wtf?
Is IMDB supporting our World cup? ;) :woot:
I guess people have started rating them together so it triggered IMDB

That does typically happen with world cup movies because they involve movies very few people are searching for on imdb.
