Which Polls would you like to be held in 2020?

Post by Lonewolf2003 » November 17th, 2019, 4:43 pm

It's time to chose the six remaining slots for the 2020 Poll schedule. After the poll is over I will use this topic the discuss the results and pick the winners if necessary. After that we will set up the schedule.

This thread can be used to clarify information regarding the ideas being voted on. And no, you don't have to vote for exactly six options; you can vote for less. Please only vote for ideas that you consider our forum to be able to make a decent list about!

These Polls are already scheduled for 2020:
On 0 Official Lists (repeat)
1001 Favourite Films (annual)
2010s (annual)
500<400 (annual)
1950s (repeat)
1960s (repeat)

For those who want some connection between the Polls and the challenge in a year, here is the challenge schedule for 2020. I highlighted the ones that (roughly) correspond with choices in the poll.
2020 Challenge Schedule
MonthCountry ChallengeTheme ChallengeTheme Challenge
January Balkans Sci-Fi/Fantasy 1000<400
February Africa African American/Blaxploitation Academy Award Nominees
March India/Pakistan/Myanmar/Bangladesh Crime films Directed by Women
April Nordic Countries Doubling the Canon Nominees 1950s
May Iberia (Spain, Portugal and surrounds) Western Comedy
June China/Hong Kong/Taiwan TSPDT + TSPDT 21st Century 1960s
July Canada Run the Director Low IMDb rating
August Germany/Austria/Switzerland <400 Checks 1970s
September Russia/USSR Animation Silent Era
October Southeast Asia Horror 1990s
November Mexico Film Noir Unofficial
December Caribbean Documentary 1980s

There is also an Italy challenge coming this December.

Thanks for organizing this Lonewolf.

When it comes to setting up the final schedule, may I request that the "on 0 official lists" poll be held some time after the DTC results are revealed? I think May would be best. Last time it caused a fair bit of havoc because the TSPDT lists were updated during the poll, causing some films to gain or lose official status while people were creating their lists.

Yes, will be best to do that after the TSPDT lists and DTC are updated, but somewhere in the first half of the year. The DTC results are finished always in April, aren't they? I don't know if there are any other major list that are updated annually we should take in consideration for when to do this.

That works for me. The only other regularly-updated official list that comes to mind around that time is TSZDT: mighty does that in May. Reddit is usually March/April and FOK is usually October/November.

Less than one day of voting left. At the moment there is a tie for the sixth place.

End results:
Silents (recurring, previous edition held in 2014) 27
Italian (recurring, previous edition held in 2015) 22
Mini-series (new) 19
TV Series (recurring, previous edition held in 2015) 19
Romance (new) 18
South Asia (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) (new) 17

Noirs (recurring, previous edition held in 2015) 17
African American Cinema (new) 15
Directorial feature debuts (new) 14
Comedies (recurring, previous edition held in 2016) 14
Christmas (recurring, previous edition held in 2012) 11
Music videos (new) 10

So it's a tie between South Asia and Noirs for the sixth spot. My inclination is to go for South Asia instead of Noirs, because this gives a good balance between 3 new and 3 recurring polls added to the schedule. SInce both TV series as Mini-series made it, the later will be scheduled in the first half and the later in the last half so they don't come after each other too soon.

Do we really need an annual director's poll?

Good question. We can decide when the times come and if PA feels like doing it again (or someone else does)

Not sure what's so strange about that, given that this forum seems to be fine with miniseries being considered movies, but obviously not TV series proper... so clearly there's enough of a difference between the two, isn't there ?

I think mini-series are a pretty big stretch already, TV-series are a completely different format altogether. We might as well start doing video game and music polls.

I personally wouldn't be opposed to a video game poll, I do think these mediums (TV and video games) have a lot more to do with movies than music.

Given that mini-series are routinely listed alongside movies in polls here (something I do find baffling), I'd rather they have their own list.

Should they be removed from movie polls? Definitely.
Should they get their own poll? Nah.

I'm totally fine with them having their own polls. Just don't think we needed to have both in the same year, since mini-series were eligible for tv-series last time. Might be best to adjust that this time.

What would you move to August instead? Mini-series? Than Mini-series and Tv-series are close after to each other and both in the second half of the year.

I don't know which ones are scheduled with challenges in mind, but I would say one of the country ones. Maybe shift 0 official list down and do mini-series in July, July-December seems like a big enough gap.

I'm not that fussed about it if nothing can be done.

The two country ones are the ones scheduled so they come directly after a corresponding challenge. Your proposal could work. If others agree on these changes, I will adjust the concept.

I'm interested in having two polls (mini-series and TV), and I think mini-series should be eligible for both polls.

Because only Ivan had one minor proposal for a change, and nobody else have had any complaints or proposals about the draft schedule. We will go with the draft schedule I made. Cause it works perfect the way it is and I see no need to change it for just one minor wish from one user, who's also fine with the schedule as it is.

My first post here and I want to say that I can't wait for the South Asian cinema challenge. I have some favorites to recommend :)
