I don't have a problem with Silent Light being slow, but I found it derivative as hell. The ending actually pissed me off.

Based on the other two responses (a very small basis to go on) I got, my sense of what has put people off seems to be on point,
Again I wonder how you come to your conclusions. You've got three responses and none of those confirm they were put off by the slowness. Mysterious Dude maybe was, but he didn't clearify. I only said I remembered the slowness, but I wasn't put off. I just wasn't as impressed as you were. Max was put off for other reasons. It seems it doesn't matter what we reply, because you already had your opinion about it.

In my opening post about the film, I brought up the slow pace and subject matter.

In the responses that followed one or the other was cited as a negative, though I think there must be other reasons, as a great many slow films and films dealing with “religious” or “spiritual” subject matter are well loved on the board.

Since then, other criticisms have arrived, one poster calling it “derivative,” and also being “pissed off” about the ending.

I am trying to investigate, but like any investigator, I have some ideas about the possible answers, and am trying to find out what else is there.

One thing about many of your responses to my posts is that you do a lot of surmising about my intentions, and often react as though you are being personally attacked, so you might consider where you are coming from and what conclusions you are drawing as much as My own

Another fan of Silent Light here. I was predisposed to like it given that Ordet is my joint favourite film. Seeing it on a big screen helped too - not sure it would have been as magical on a TV screen.

I was surprised In the City of Sylvia ranked so lowly when I looked back at my ratings. All I can remember now is the magnificence of the café scene - the lesser half of wandering the streets has faded.

@Obgeoff

Yeah, it looks like only a handful of people, here, really liked Silent Light. I see you have included another homage high up on your list (Flight of the Red Balloon), which, like In the City of Sylvia (and Secret Sunshine) didn't quite crack my top 20.

I was prepared to like all 3 of these more than I did, and perhaps my expectations interfered, but I thought both Guerin's and Hou's films could have been better. As for Secret Sunshine, it probably needs a re-watch, as I think I was not in the mood for it when I first saw it, and different viewings often yield a different sense of appreciation, especially with less conventional movies.

I remember I was very keyed up for In the City of Sylvia after reading the blurb about it at the film festival I saw it at. In fact, it was the film I was most looking forward to. But despite liking aspects of the film (the cafe scene, etc.), I came away a bit disappointed despite loving the idea, and it was somewhat similar for me with Flight of the Red Balloon, though the idea wasn't nearly as compelling for me.

It is not totally easy to add films on imdb, but there is a way.

1. My Winnipeg
2. There Will Be Blood
3. Zodiac
4. No Country for Old Men
5. The Edge of Heaven
6. Lars and the Real Girl
7. Grindhouse [I realise this might be an issue for counting purposes where people vote Death Proof or Planet Terror individually, but it was made to be a cinema double bill/anthology with the trailers & that's how I watched it and enjoyed it. Either title individually would rank much lower for me]
8. Mad Detective
9. Eastern Promises
10. You the Living
11. Persepolis
12. Couscous/The Secret of the Grain
13. The Assassination of Jesse James
14. 4 Months 3 Weeks 2 Days
15. Hot Fuzz
16. The Banishment
17. Ratatouille
18. Honeydripper
19. Katyn
20. [rec]
I can happily join the Silent Light hate. I like Ordet a lot, but I actively disliked Silent Light. I'm yet to click with any Reygadas films at 4 attempts, beyond quite liking the opening of Post Tenebras Lux.

Most others have also excluded Silent Light, but this is a new reason. Some times negative discrimination covers all of the bases, I guess.

Thought about including Sleepwalking Land and a few others in your list (I did include a couple), but the book is so much better (in fact, one of my very favorite African novels)

In any case, Reygadas is not my cup of tea. :P

I have not read Couto's novel. Taking note.

7. Grindhouse [I realise this might be an issue for counting purposes where people vote Death Proof or Planet Terror individually, but it was made to be a cinema double bill/anthology with the trailers & that's how I watched it and enjoyed it. Either title individually would rank much lower for me]
Would have been the case for me if it wasn't for the "missing reels".

This poll will run for at least three weeks, probably closing on Friday 22 November.
Any update on the deadline? I might get around to submitting a list after work tomorrow - around 10:00am GMT on Friday. I could probably make a better list though if I didn't rush things and made my list after a decent night's sleep, which would possibly place it around 11:30pm GMT on Friday.

Given that we are talking 12 years ago now, I have decided to deliberately leave out all films that I have not revisited since they were first in cinemas - hence the absence of There Will Be Blood, Sweeney Todd etc on my ballot.

Meh. I've seen a fair amount from this year but haven't found that much greatness in it yet - weak year, or just missing the right films? I suspect it's the latter. Didn't find out this time around unfortunately so it'll have to wait for the future - and it means I'm more interested than usual in the results. Anyway this is what I have

1. My Winnipeg (Guy Maddin)
2. Starting Out in the Evening (Andrew Wagner)
3. No Country for Old Men (Coen brothers)
4. Autohystoria (Raya Martin)
5. Ne touchez pas la hache (Jacques Rivette)
6. Los cronocrímenes (Nacho Vigalondo)

11. 4 luni, 3 saptamâni si 2 zile (Cristian Mungiu)
12. Enchanted (Kevin Lima)
13. Le voyage du ballon rouge (Hsiao-Hsien Hou)
14. Andosi (Shahram Mokri)
15. I'm Not There (Todd Haynes)
16. The Man From Earth (Richard Schenkman)
17. The Visitor (Tom McCarthy)
18. Madame Tutli-Putli (Chis Lavis/Maciek Szczerbowski)
19. Sukkar banat (Nadine Labaki)
20. Paranoid Park (Gus Van Sant)

Not many HM this year but I did like these also: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Bikur Ha-Tizmoret, Into the Wild, Juno, Once, Persepolis, The Savages, Le scaphandre et le papillon, Sicko, The Simpsons Movie, Superbad, Zodiac

Worst of the Year:

Sunshine
