Post by joachimt » October 23rd, 2019, 7:35 am

Welcome to the iCM Forum World Cup - Season 4!

Here's a quick summary of how the tournament worksShow
We start with 32 films from 32 countries. Each country has a manager who determines which movie will be watched. In the first round the countries are divided into 8 groups of 4. From each group the countries that end up at #1 and #2 proceed to the next round. In the 2nd round the 16 remaining countries will be divided into 8 matches of 2. The managers pick a new movie. The winner of each match proceeds to the next round. This continues till the final.

This topic is for discussion about round 1. Movies will be send secretly, but it's allowed to discuss recommendations etc...

Which movies are eligible?
- Less than 1000 checks (at the moment the movie is picked).
- Maximum runtime of 180 minutes.
- Only one movie per director for a country in the whole season. A director with movies in multiple countries can be chosen once for each country.
- No movies from season 1, season 2 or season 3.
- Coproductions are allowed, but with an explanation why a movie certainly belongs to the country it competes for.

If you want to dig back into the previous seasons, you can find all topics here.

Countries will be divided into pots for the draw. Pots to be decided......

Did I count right? I think we've got exactly 16 countries from Europe and 16 from the rest of the world (I put Russia in the rest of the world).

I think that's a cool distribution, but shouldn't Australia (and maybe even Canada) switch places with either Brazil, Mexico or Senegal?

It's debatable but from my POV your distribution looks great.

Australia - Brazil being the only one that could be changed but I'd go with Australia as well.

Portugal and Czech republic / Hungary could also be a switch, looking at the world cup succes level of those countries.

I was basing Senegal on Sembène + Mambéty, but I can understand how Australia might overtake that. But that was a bit farfetched, Mexico and Brazil were my main suggestions.

Regarding Portugal, if the pools are based on previous performances then I'm totally in favour of switching it with either Hungary or Czech Republic. If they aren't, then all three are probably around the same level, so I'd agree with any one of them being in the first pot.

Strictly speaking (production/industry): Czech Republic should be above Portugal and Mexico above Iran, but it doesn't really matter.

Maybe it's a good thing to change pot entries every once in a while, I mean there's difference between big-hitters and yo-yo countries even in the highest echelon.

Ukraine's first film should be easily traceable: A former DtC nominee and a regular on my <400 ballot. :innocent:

How 'bout just randomising it. Just say F' it and hope for the best. If a group ends up 4 heavy hitters so be it. It might mean a group of 4 lower countries get drawn together but then it means two lower countries get a chance to prove themselves in the next round.

How about another idea. 2 groups between each group. That is group a and b is Europe-big. C and d are Europe-small and so on. Again allows the minor countries a chance to prove themselves.

Just some drunken' thoughts for you to think about. (Honestly I dont care how it is run, I just want to be involved)

I could just throw all Europe in one pot and the rest in another pot, so each group will get two European countries and two from the rest of the world, no matter how big or small the countries are.

It's probably the easiest way, yeah.

If we keep the separate big-small pots, I agree about switching out Portugal for either Czechia or Hungary.

Perhaps for Non-Europe, we split geographically instead of big-small

Asia: China, India, Iran, Japan, Georgia, Pakistan, Taiwan, Tajikistan
Rest: Australia, Canada, Russia, USA, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Senegal

On that note, we could even split Europe geographically
West: England, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Iceland
East: Poland, Albania, Czechia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Slovenia, Ukraine

If you want to dig back into the previous seasons, you can find all topics here.
On that note, could the rest of the Season 3 threads be moved into the subforum? It only contains the matches up until the quarter-finals. There are 6 threads that I can see on Page 2 that need to be moved.

Yes, that partition would probably create some fun groups too, but Russia seems to have been banished from both Europe and Asia :D

You should ask a mod to do so. I always start a thread in "Our lists and projects" so it's not stuffed away in a subforum. When something is finished it could be moved indeed.

Punishment for bad behaviour... or being chosen last. :p

(But in all seriousness, there was one too many European countries, and it seemed the most logical to remove. I suppose Russia could be put in East, pushing Greece to West, and then have Iceland as Rest of World since it's geographically close to North America...

Or put Russia in Asia and move either Iran or Georgia into the Rest of World group since they're both often considered Middle East/West Asia, which could be separated from East, South, and Central Asia.)

I just made the groups this way. Seems fine to me. Sure, one group is stronger than the other, but that would always be the case. I don't see any horrible draws. It's not like Japan, USA, France and Italy are in one group together.

Sometimes I wonder why some frequent/consistent members avoid this cool stuff... 4th season and kicking but you won't see any replies from 3eyes, flaiky, WalterNeff, xianjiro etc. Is there any hope for them getting into the competition?

So what's the track record for films close to the 3 hour mark? Also, would fan edits be eligible?

I was always kind of daunted by the whole process, until someone (I think it was you!) suggested that I join the third WC, instead of just moaning that I wish more people would watch a film I liked. (You said it much more nicely, of course -- I'm just paraphrasing.)

It seemed like a big undertaking until I got involved, trying to figure out which films qualified and hadn't already been used, and feeling like I didn't know right off what country to represent before I read more of the rules and exchanges. In the end, it turned out to require very little adjustment to my viewing habits, and was lots of fun. Looking forward to WC4!

Season 1's longest film was 177mins
Season 2's longest film was 167mins
Season 3's longest film was 163mins

The long ones seem to be around 2.5hrs. I like them to be between 90mins to 120mins myself for the world cup. However I'll watch whatever I'm given but at 3hrs long it better be damn good and hold my attention :D
