Yes, I'm debating between two favorite picks for Greece right now, but that isn't one of them! I appreciated the recommendation, though!

I also want to recommend Klass to jvv, it has a great checked/favorited ratio however judging by Ivan's rating at Letterboxd it's a love it or hate it kinda thing for some. Btw it's also the final opportunity to use it in WC as it getting close to 1000 checks.

I've already sent in my nomination for the first round. I might look into it for the second round if I make it that far (would be a first for me).

We're allowed to change submission before they're revealed in case we start having second thoughts, don't we.

Probably, but I chose Estonia specifically for the movie I submitted for the first round, so I am definitely not going to change it.

I'm still considering which sex comedy to pick - I might need some extra time.

Thanks for the rec. I'll look into it. Other candidates I'm considering atm: Dr. Carstair's 1869 Love-Root Elixir, Alice in Wonderland: An X-Rated Musical Fantasy, A Touch of Genie and Thundercrack. It's gonna be a tough call this one...

Thanks for the recommendation. I already saw this movie and while it has the potential to do well in the world cup (reminded me a lot of Roy Anderson movies, which are quite popular on the forum) I personally disliked it.

Interesting to see this rec from you, Ivan. I've actually had it open on YouTube for the last few days and have been meaning to watch it. Does anyone know whether there are subtitles available?

Judging by the view counts on imdb/letterboxd, probably not. I saw the Mandarin dub, which I understand just enough of.

It's worth watching even if you can't nominate it for the WC, the premise is simple enough that you don't NEED to understand everything that they're saying, but IIRC you have no problem watching unsubbed films anyway.

Thanks, Ivan. Yes, I don't mind dipping my toes in un-subbed waters on occasion. I like the look of the film, so I might well watch it anyway this month.

It's rather quirky and interesting how Albanian films of the period were shown in China!

I actually discovered this particular film because it was featured in a Chinese film(Electric Shadows), and it's very easy to see why it was such a popular film in China at the time. :D

All the stuff mentioned so far for Poland is on my watchlist, but I doubt I'll get to all of it. The Lure I might actually skip since it's already got such a large footprint with the Criterion release.

I tried it last year (I chose Recordações da Casa Amarela, and I posted a translation of one of Bénard da Costa's texts about the film, a beautiful meditation on the role of the mother throughout his work), but I guess people don't like fun :P

I'm a big fan of the book, and while I enjoyed the film I found it to be somewhat lacking in the way it portraits their relationship. Nevertheless, it is an interesting suggestion and I'm willing to consider it just for the photography, which is gorgeous. Thanks for the rec ;)

In terms of divisive directors though, I did think about selecting something from Michael Snow.

If I were representing Poland (though sebby has already done a damn good job of it): https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103150/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Ha, I was planning on watching this today, along with 300 miles to Heaven, Korczak, and maybe something from Has. Trying to fit in at least 30-40 watches before the deadline. I don't want to cakewalk into round 2 w something like Sanatorium or Promised Land -- would rather play exhibitionist and expose a film with 100 checks or less.

The film is on YT for anyone interested.

That particular channel has a ton of good polish stuff w eng subs, some of it in HD to boot.

I recommend this to blocho (Australia):
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059040/

and this to sol (Canada):
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095871/
That would be a bold choice for Canada. I'd probably pick something even more over the top like Siblings. It would get destroyed though.

As for Australia, the first and last one I'd have lined up for round one would be A Woman's Tale. I was considering claiming Australia just to get this one in.

I also take the liberty to give some reccomendations / movies I would choose for the selected WC-countries:

...

4. Canada (sol) - Careful (1992)
I hate Maddin, so that's not going to happen as long as I'm managing Canada. :P

In terms of divisive directors though, I did think about selecting something from Michael Snow.
If I was managing Canada, and I couldn't pick a Maddin film, I would pick Out of the Blue.

Not a big fan of Out of the Blue, but I certainly liked it more than everything that I have seen from Maddin.

Pin is an awesome film. Big fan of that one but it's too widely seen/well-known for my liking. I think it's better to be promoting the more obscure stuff.

Outta 3 Canadian films listed on your 500lessthan400 it's no other than Pin having best fav/check ratio, while speaking of obscurity among these is ridiculously small (around 310vs285vs250 checks). But in the end you should pick what's dearest to you.
