iCM Forum's Favorite Shorts (2019) - Nominations

ICM Forum's Favorite Shorts (2019)

Image

Welcome to iCM Forum's Favorite Shorts. From 2013 to 2016 this was an annual poll. It's been three years since then. The last time we had a new #1 (screenshot above). Very curious to see how this edition will end!

Post a link to an IMDB- or ICM-list with your favorite shorts here.
  • A short film is any short of 45 minutes or less. TV episodes that are part of an anthology show where the episodes are unrelated are allowed.
  • Lists can be any length (but preferably only contain shorts you actually recommend......).
  • Each nominee can only be named once (of course).
  • Your list may be ranked, unranked, or partially-ranked. In a partially-ranked list, the top X films are ranked and everything after that point is unranked. When not specified I will consider a list as ranked.
Listlength will be 300 and halflife will be 50, just like the previous editions.

Last year's list can be found here.

Deadline: November 16th

This one is tricky, since I only keep firm track of all the 30+ minute films I've seen. I've checked/rated some shorts, but definitely not all of them.
I might put some effort in this, but looking at the shorts that are popular here I wonder if it's actually worth the trouble. I went through the ones from the animated list and save one or two they were all big disappointments. Same goes for some of the live-action ICM favorites I've watched through the years.

I'm very much looking forward to this poll, since this one hasn't been run since I got here in February 2017.

Little tip for those who know about Koji Morimoto: don't forget the man's work! He's not big on ICM but he's done some amazing things.

For some reason the iCM list-edit search function doesn't yield One Week (1920). Anyone else have this problem?

I found One Week by typing "One Week Buster Keaton", but yeah it didn't find it with less than that.

I have a question. Would a 2-part mini-series short be allowed? IMDb has Team Sonic Racing: Overdrive (2019) categorized as both a short and a mini-series. One episode was released first and the second episode was released a month later. Both episodes have been combined as a "complete" version by its corporation/owner/distributor. The combined version is only 9 minutes long (the two episodes are 5 minutes each).

Combined version:

Ep 1

Ep 2

If the episodes combined are 45 minutes or shorter, I have no problem with that. Carmel also has a mini-series on his list (#3). No runtimes for that one on IMDb, but I guess Carmel knows it's max 45 min combined.

When in doubt, you can always search by IMDB tt-code.

I'm not really a short film person, I prefer feature films so my list is actually pretty poor. I used my Flickchart as usual, pulling the short films off it. Maybe I will spend some time watching some more to puff out the list with better quality but we will see. There are a couple of good shorts in here though that should have some more eyes on them, the rest though are just animated shorts from various places.

I don't want to mess with tradition or anything, but it seems kinda weird to me that the cut-off is 45 minutes here whereas in the Official Challenges we use 40 minutes (like the Oscars) as the definition of a feature length film. Just saying. Maybe we could also do a poll some time down the track for favourite short features?

When you use IMDb to create your list, you should just sort by runtime and not filter on genre-tag "short". Some might miss that tag. When sorting by runtime, you can choose any cut-off you want. That said, I don't want the cut-off to be on discussion. It has always been 45 here and that's what we'll do this time again.

Your post did remind me to check my ratings on IMDb that don't have a runtime listed......

we live in Europe. 45 minutes PAL is 46 minute 55 seconds NTSC. So nothing is set in stone.

That's fine. I totally get that it makes past results comparable if we use the same cut-off.

Another plus on making your lists on iCM nowadays is that, unlike IMDB, it doesn't allow duplicate films.
