Obscurities?
TALKING HEADS not exactly obscure but hope it eligible - monologues written by Alan Bennett - 6 (self contained) episodes limited run series - with the standout being Maggie Smith in BED AMONG THE LENTILS

STREET SMART an engaging thriller with knockout turns from an evil Morgan Freeman and Kathy Baker as his mistress (giving it the full Claire Trevor).

MAKING MR RIGHT a pleasant Rom com with Malkovich in dual role and lovely Ann Magnuson's best chance

What to say about MASCARA?
A truly one of a kind thriller bringing together opera lovers and transvestites/transsexuals in a gloomy European twilight. Charlotte Rampling and Michael Sarrazin are the siblings involved in murder.

Predictions?
Kubrick always does well and the DePalma was a big one at the time. Please god No to the Wim Wenders although I know lots of you like it.

Friendly reminder you'll need to post IMDB URLs, too.
Thanks, I had forgotten about that (more of a symbolic vote anyway given the weighing system, but still).

I forgot how good this year was for both comedy and action. Strangely, I didn't like Lethal Weapon, which is probably the most obvious fusion of the two that's eligible for this poll.

Apparently Yuri Ilyenko's 1965 film A Spring for the Thirsty is now from 1987 according to imdb. I hope we can make an exception and leave it for the '65 poll. It's just too ridiculous to include it here, imo.

Ranked:

1. Plain Talk & Common Sense (Jon Jost)
2. Der Tod des Empedokles oder: Wenn dann der Erde Grün von neuem Euch erglänzt / The Death of Empedocles (Jean-Marie Straub, Danièle Huillet)
3. The Red Thread (Larry Gottheim)

I'm thinking of doing a list, but different sources have different years for James Benning's landscape film. It's confusing. Anyone know if it actually was screened in 1986 anywhere?

IMDb says 17 September 1987 (Toronto Film Festival), The Austrian Film Museum and their DVD says 1986, the book Canadian Film and Video: A Bibliography and Guide to the Literature says 1987 and mentions the festival in Toronto too, but then we have WorldCat, BFI, CFMDC and Rotten Tomatoes that use 1986 as the release year. Other sources will say 1988, but at least that's not true, we have evidence that it was screened in 1987 already. I hate these things!

For this poll, we only use one source: IMDB.

Interesting note here on IMDb
This film was made in 1965 but was forbidden until 1987.
Although the film was made in 1965, I see a variety of released years elsewhere, like 1994 and 2001, or that the years could be for a different film. The film is like the case of that for Ivan the Terrible, Part II (1958) which was released years after it was made. Even when the 1965 poll is conducting, giving the lack of popularity of the film, many people may not realize that it is a 1965 film. I would say in situation like this, we stick with the IMDb year of 1987 and thus eligible for this poll.

- Your ballot can be either ranked or unranked, but I will assume it's ranked unless otherwise stated. For ranked ballots it makes it easier if you use a numbered list.
Oh, are partially ranked lists not allowed? I though Max made a spreadsheet so that it would be possible. :(

What lack of popularity? :verymad:
"Obscured" sounds better?

Apparently Yuri Ilyenko's 1965 film A Spring for the Thirsty is now from 1987 according to imdb. I hope we can make an exception and leave it for the '65 poll. It's just too ridiculous to include it here, imo.
A 1965 film for me, if only for the fact that it has always been such for me. It seems anathema to me to look at this one as a 1987 film, haha. I think it made my ballot for the 1965 poll back on the CFB and it won't be popping up in my submission for '87.
That's all, folks!

Yeah, 1965 for me too, which it has been listed as on IMDb for years until very recently. I'm fine with the decision made, but I personally won't consider it for this year.

If A Spring for the Thirsty isn't a 1987 film, then neither is Blind Chance.

And if they are both 1987 films, then Kira Muratova's Brief Encounters must also be a 1987 film for the same reason.

Either pick copyright date, or first screening date. Imdb go by the last.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109306/reference
Produced in 19991. Due to bankruptcy it was shelved for three years. In 1994 Jessica Lange did win an Oscar for a performance she then did 3 years ealier, which is weird for the others nominated and for Lange herseelf.

And not to speeak of The Day the Clown Died. Completed in 1972. Will be first shown in the Library of Congress in 2024. So is it a 72 movie or a 2024 movie. Jerry Lewis simply didn't want people to see it for 50 years.

Why didn’t he do that with all his movies? -_-

I had no idea it was scheduled for a screening. It's supposed to be the worst movie ever made. Something to look forward to.

For this poll, we only use one source: IMDB.

Landscape Suicide is eligible for this poll
I know, but I was wondering if anyone knew about any screening or something in 1986, as it comes up now and then. IMDb doesn't always have the correct information and some information can be changed.

Now it's back to 1965 on IMDb. I know it was filmed that year and banned until 1987, as someone else mentioned. But I have no idea if it was screened in 1965 or before 1987.

That is an interesting situation. Thank you for pointing it out. Perhaps someone reported, even from one of us. I see that icheckmovies.com still has it as a 1987 film. Someone above suggested the use of copyright date, or first screening date. I know there are many experts here who may know the copyright or screening date by heart. Lots of us don't, particularly for years long past. Personally, confirming those dates can be complicated and time consuming. IMDb is a simple reference. Despite of its drawback, it is one of the most authoritative reference nowadays. Back to the Yuri Ilyenko's film, since it was list as a 1987 during a span of time for the poll and that I had mentioned it as eligible, for the fairness of those who have listed, I keep it as eligible. Of course, people may choose to remove it from their list or not include in a new ballot.
