Year by Year Polls: 1942 CLOSED

#1

Post by flaiky » July 7th, 2019, 2:08 pm

Help us create a list of the best films from 1942!

Rules:

- Reply here with a list of titles you've seen from 1942, followed by a list of bare IMDb urls for the same films. The last bit is essential as it is how I gather and count the results.

- You can vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 films.

- Your ballot can be either ranked, partially ranked, or unranked. If it's not fully ranked - please state that clearly.

- Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies and TV mini-series are all eligible, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

- We use IMDb dates for consistency, so a title should be listed on IMDb as 1942 to be eligible.

- You may update your ballot at any time before the poll closes (remember to also change your urls list!)

The scoring:

You may list choices in order of preference, in which case your top film will receive a number of points equal to the number of films in your list up to 20, with each next-ranked film receiving one fewer point; or in no order, in which case each film will receive the same number of points. So, for example, if you only vote for 5 ranked films, your top film will receive 5 points and your 5th-place film will receive 1 point. If you vote for 20 unranked films, each film will receive 10.5 points; if you vote for 5 unranked films, each film will receive 3 points, etc. Partially ranked ballots will use both of these systems.

Some resources:

1942 films you've rated on IMDb

1942 films sorted by most votes on IMDb

1942 films you've checked on ICM

1942 films you *haven't* checked on ICM

This poll will run for at least three weeks, probably closing on Sunday 28 July.

The next poll will be for 1987, followed by 1964.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Seen 52 features length films, and 6 shorts from 1942. It is a better year than I remembered, though also one I struuggle to get overly excited about seeing new films from (feels like I have already gone through the key films). That said, I do have a watchlist for '42, and plan to catch at least 5 films before the deadline.

My top 20:

1. 4 passi fra le nuvole / Four Steps in the Clouds (1942, Alessandro Blasetti)
2. Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942, Michael Curtiz)
3. Mrs. Miniver (1942, William Wyler)
4. Emberek a havason / Men on the Mountain (1942, István Szöts)
5. To Be or Not to Be (1942, Ernst Lubitsch)
6. Casablanca (1942, Michael Curtiz)
7. Tales of Manhattan (1942, Julien Duvivier)
8. Les visiteurs du soir / The Devil's Envoys (1942, Marcel Carné)
9. Ala-Arriba! (1942, José Leitão de Barros)
10. The Man Who Came to Dinner (1942, William Keighley)

11. Tragica notte / Tragic Night (1942, Mario Soldati)
12. Wir machen Musik (1942, Helmut Käutner)
13. La nuit fantastique (1942, Marcel L'Herbier)
14. The Major and the Minor (1942, Billy Wilder)
15. Now, Voyager (1942, Irving Rapper)
16. Malombra (1942, Mario Soldati)
17. Gentleman Jim (1942, Raoul Walsh)

The Ox-Bow Incident is 1942 now? I used to defend IMDB's dating method, but now it is just getting sillier and sillier.

3. Aniki Bóbó
4. Bambi
5. L'assassin habite... au 21
6. The Magnificent Ambersons
7. In Which We Serve
8. Emberek a havason
9. This Gun for Hire
10. La nuit fantastique
11. Les visiteurs du soir
12. Son of Fury: The Story of Benjamin Blake

I'm (annoyed) going to sit this one out - I don't have enough films I liked from this year to submit anything.

[but I'm available if you need me with the spreadsheet]

Wait, I thought Four Steps in the Clouds was a massive forum favorite, how am I the only one to even have it on my toplist?

-

Ironically, I did watch Blasetti's other 1942 effort yesterday: The Jester's Supper, and while surprisingly rauchy for '41, just felt far too silly, and even lazy. I would have been surprised Blasetti even did this iif I had not already seen The Iron Crown.

1 out of 5 (presumed) new '42 viewing down.

Every time year-changes on IMDb are mentioned in these threads, I'm surprised people mention things like "I always thought of this movie as a *insert year*-movie". Do you guys really remember years of release of movies you watched? I think of movies releaseyears as "from the '40's" for example. I couldn't even tell the years of the movies in my alltime top 10.

Yes, films are very often seen as defining films for a specific year - and while I don't get upset at these changes it is strange. Imagine if Wizard of Oz or Gone with the Wind were suddenly '38 movies instead of '39 movies - the "story of 1939" would fundamentally change. Especially those of us who actively rank or review years will place some importance of the year - as it tells a story of this specific time. This is also why, in recent years, many will argue about IMDb years vs. when the film was released at the cinema, because it defined their cinematic year and the cinematic conversation of the year.

This also ties in with award ceremonies, best film, best performances, etc.

And of corse you know how many of us at the very least have slight OCD regarding these things. ;)

Same. If someone was to quiz me on film years by listing title after title, I'd probably get 95% of them correct. I don't know why, but the years stick in my head really easily. I suppose taking part in polls like these for nearly a decade has something to do with it, ahem.

It'll be top 10 on mine, when I make it

I've only seen 15 features from 1942, and I doubt there's any point in voting for the 26 shorts.

1 The Magnificent Ambersons
2 The Murderer Lives at Number 21
3 The Palm Beach Story
4 To Be or Not to Be
5 The Pride of the Yankees
6 Bambi
7 Cat People
8 Journey into Fear
9 Casablanca
10 Saboteur
11 Yankee Doodle Dandy
12 The Ghost of Frankenstein (saw this within the past year or so...never realized how much Young Frankenstein borrowed from this)

Dates of release......Me too - I file my dvd library - 8 shelves now - by year of release, with few odd diversions into box sets (Chabrol, Woody, Bond etc) (The ones without cases DVDRs mostly - are alphabetical in x 2 large dvd wallets).

I think I spent a whole Xmas vacation cataloguing my favourites by year in order to make participating in these polls easier.

The other gift I have is near total recall of the order of billing of classic movie casts.

Sadly neither of these abilities will make me rich  B)

OBSCURITIES?

REAP THE WILD WIND Isn't really, but It noticeably absent from other lists - I thought it one of DeMille's best so I'll give it a shout - - a rip roaring Boys Own seafaring adventure. Star watchers note that Paulette Goddard & Ray Milland have the leads - vhs/dvd covers frequently feature the 1950 reissue publicity posters giving more prominent billing to John Wayne & Susan Hayward, who were by that point bigger stars - although they have the second leads here.

THE FOREST RANGERS is more legitimately obscure with Goddard and Hayward love rivals for Fred MacMurray until climactic forest fire distracts them - highlights are a three in a sleeping bag routine and the comedy log rolling sequence - and movie is a must for anyone who has ever wanted to see Hayward play a character called "Butch". :woot:

Judy Canova had a good year - this endearing hillbilly clown featured in TRUE TO THE ARMY - a variant on SHE LOVES ME NOT/HOW TO BE VERY VERY POPULAR with Judy as murder witness hiding out in Army camp dressed as a man. For stark realism though, JOAN OF OZARK has her marked for death by the Gestapo! :o :woot:
Image Marked for death!

BUSSES ROAR - neat B movie about saboteur planting bomb on bus - which I guess makes it the SPEED of 1942..... Richard Travis and Julie Bishop get to play Keanu and Sandra - and a young Eleanor Parker has second lead.

GERT AND DAISY (Elsie & Doris Waters) had two films released - GERT AND DAISY'S WEEKEND and GERT AND DAISY CLEAN UP
Image

Wikipedia tells me that the Kray twins were referred to as Gert & Daisy - although I suspect not to their faces...

MACAO/GAMBLING HELL a good taut wartime melodrama although I think it completed in 1939... hold up due to WW2. imdb says 1942 though so I guess it eligible.

PREDICTIONS?
Here's looking at you kid....

Caught an additional 3 films in my attempt to get at least one more entry onto my list. Sadly I have not yet been in luck.

Le destin fabuleux de Désirée Clary (1942, Sacha Guitry)
There were a few momeents of creativity/cleverness, as expected in a Guitry film - but overall this was a flat and stale effort devoid of passion and humour. 5/10.

Un colpo di pistola / A Pistol Shot (1942, Renato Castellani)'
Very well shot, but the actual story felt overly convoluted. 6/10.

Le mariage de Chiffon (1942, Claude Autant-Lara)
The closest to making my list, The Marriage of Chiffon is classy, tongue in cheek and "reasonably" audacious - brought down only by dwelling far too much the stale romance between the aging colonel and our 16 year old lead (also, when the romantic rival is her "uncle", and neither of these romances being played for as big a laugh as they should, you have to wonder), 7/10.

Seeing Angel list Ala-Arriba! inspires me to make it my 5th and likely last viewing for this poll.
