Year by Year Polls: 1972 -- CLOSED

#1

Post by gromit82 » May 29th, 2019, 1:20 am

IMPORTANT!
After you list your films in this poll, please then include a second full list (without numbers) of bare IMDb URLs for those films, in the same order. I ask for your co-operation and understanding as it will save me, your friendly volunteer host, many many hours (thanks to a clever new scoring spreadsheet). I won't be accepting your ballot unless it includes the IMDb URLs (but if you forget, I'll send you a private message and give you a chance to fix it). Thanks!

Please note that I don't want actual IMDb lists, just the URLs so that I can copy and paste them.

Rules:

- Reply here with a list of titles you've seen from 1972, followed by a list of IMDb URLs for the same films. You can vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 films.

- Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies and TV mini-series are all eligible, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

- We use IMDb dates for consistency, so a title should be listed on IMDb as 1972.

- Your ballot can be either ranked, partially ranked, or unranked. Please make sure that you clearly indicate what you are doing with regard to ranking; otherwise, your ballot may not be counted as you intended.

- You may update your ballot at any time before the poll closes, but remember to also change your list of URLs!

The scoring:

You may list choices in order of preference, in which case your top film will receive a number of points equal to the number of films in your list up to 20, with each next-ranked film receiving one fewer point; or in no order, in which case each film will receive the same number of points. So, for example, if you only vote for 5 ranked films, your top film will receive 5 points and your 5th-place film will receive 1 point. If you vote for 20 unranked films, each film will receive 10.5 points; if you vote for 5 unranked films, each film will receive 3 points, etc. Partially ranked ballots will use both of these systems.

Some resources:

1972 films you've rated on IMDb

1972 films sorted by most votes on IMDb

1972 films you've checked on ICM

1972 films you *haven't* checked on ICM

This poll will run for at least three weeks, closing no earlier than Tuesday, June 18. on Friday, June 21, at 7 PM US Pacific time.

The next poll will be for 1942, followed by 1987.

'Solaris' has been listed on IMDb as 1972 for the last decade, only sometime recently have they changed it to 1971. What's the verdict on this big contender?

It says it premiered in Moscow December 30th, so if that is true it can't be anything else than 1971

Can't find anything outside of IMDB about a 1971 premiere for Solaris, just about every other source says it premiered in the 1972 Cannes festival and didn't release in Russia until a year later.

From wikipedia:
In January 1972, the State Committee for Cinematography requested editorial changes before releasing Solaris. These included a more realistic film with a clearer image of the future and deletion of allusions to God and Christianity. Tarkovsky successfully resisted such major changes, and after a few minor edits Solaris was approved for release in March 1972.
So technically the film wasn't even completed until March 72.

Wikipedia is also user generated. With a such specific date they might have found a newspaper ad. There are several examples of movies being called back for edits after a premiere, so Solyaris might be one of them.

Another site with the same date: https://www.kinopoisk.ru/film/43911/

...with a citation, which I obviously can't verify, but it's more than what IMDb asks for. I'm more inclined to go with 1972 since I can't find anything at all on the supposed December premiere.

Also just about every home release and screening I can find lists 1972.

Ultimately it's up to the host, whatever he decides just make a note of it in case the IMDb year does change back to 1972 when we get around to the 1971 poll.

I haven't decided whether to include or exclude Solaris and would appreciate seeing any other evidence either way. When I make a decision, I'll let everyone know in this thread.

Updated to add: I've decided to make Solaris eligible for 1972.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Dr. Mark Bould's (BFI Film Classics) book, "Solaris", states that "Solaris debuted in Moscow on 5 February 1972 before receiving a wide, Category One release on 20 March." The 30 December 1971 date reflects the date that Tarkovsky submitted the as-yet unreviewed film to the studio and is not a release date. I submitted this information to IMDb last month and they declined it as being unable to verify the information.
I also found another website where this was being discussed, and it was mentioned that the faulty information appears to be from an overzealous contributor using the Russian movie database website - Kinopoisk. Here's a link to that discussion:

http://movie-awards-redux.freeforums.ne ... 972-closed

Every sourcebook I have ever read lists the film as 1972.

Fascinating list... would not have expected Pink Flamingos to make your list. Very cool.

And a friendly reminder to include the IMDB URLs when you get a chance...

Added now, don't worry, was always planning to, forgot to add a note.

Pink Flamingos actually used to be even higher up on the list, I love early John Waters!

I posted a thread at IMDb's Get Satisfaction board to request more evidence of the Solaris release date. While I haven't received a definitive answer yet, I think it's most likely that the film will ultimately be determined to be a 1972 release, and I wouldn't be surprised if IMDb ultimately reverts the film back to 1972.

So, for purposes of this poll, Andrei Tarkovsky's Solyaris (Solaris) is ELIGIBLE as a 1972 release.

Thanks for following up on this, Gromit, with the nicely laid-out post on the IMDB board. Doesn't seem like showing the film to the "Art Council" in 1971 -- which seems to be the fact based on official and true Russian-language sources, as well as the unreliable English ones (à la the one guy's response) -- should count as a premiere. That would be like counting dates of test screenings, where changes are made afterwards, or censorship/rating board viewings as official releases.
