Meshes in the Afternoon and Madchen in Uniform belong on any pure directed by a woman list. Their male co-directors are incidental credits due to circumstances not their role in the film.
"Stan Brakhage, who knew the couple, has claimed in his book Film at Wit's End that Meshes was in fact largely Hammid's creation, and that their marriage began to suffer when Deren received more credit." Wikipedia page for Meshes in the Afternoon.

It doesn't make it untrue either. None of us was present on any of these productions, so we simply don't know. If we want a list with 100% artistic control, there is a simple way to do it.

After all, noone is stopping us from running a director team poll sometime later.

Thanks PA, as always. Really pleasing results on the whole, though I definitely expect some goodies in the 150-200 section and I'm sure I'm going to wish the list had extended that far. Glad to hear you'll be doing the runners up. I look forward to analysing the final list(s).

Interesting, because I seem to recall reading recently the opposite. That Hammid himself said it was nearly all Deren's work. I'll see if I can find where I read it.

Edit: Also wikipedia:
Alexander Hamid's role in the creation of Meshes of the Afternoon is as cameraperson. Maya Deren made extensive storyboards for all of her films including camera movements and camera effects. She wrote about these techniques in professional filmmaking magazines. The ideas and execution of the film are fully attributable to Deren. Hamid also acknowledged Deren as the sole creator of Meshes of the Afternoon.(Citation: The Legend of Maya Deren: A Documentary Biography and Collected Works (Volume 1 Part Two ed.). ISBN 0-911689-17-6.)

@russa03 is being a typical sexist by de-legitimizing a woman's brilliant work by trying to attribute it to a man. (Not being deadly serious)

No, it doesn't but he does know more about the production than we do. I think it is relevant.

That's the best source so i'll go with that.

Why do people get touchy when you question a woman's role in a work? This doesn't happen when there's a discussion of where credit is due on Performance.

Well, being given sole directorial credit doesn't mean "100% artistic control" neither.

It's not as though people are voting for male-female director teams only to pollute the results by sneaking some dudes in there.

You say, then writing another comment. I gave a response to your response, apparently that's taking things too far. Why are you being so unfriendly to someone that is merely opening a debate on something?

He acted like an asshole in Visages villages (well, not in, but you know what i mean) but i got the impression from her they were on good terms before that. In an article about the situtaion: “The door is closed,” she says. “We were friendly. I would like to be in his head to know what happened. I don’t even know if he watched the film. Maybe he didn’t. Knowing him, he’s able not to have looked at it.” Are there any quotes by Godard about her films?

At the risk of incurring the wrath of forum stalwarts, I have to admit I found the last film I watched of hers, Le Bonheur, to be a distressing experience (once we hit the third act) that struck me as rather shallow in the end. It kind of discouraged me from seeking out her other films, which doesn't make sense I guess since I thought Vagabond was a masterpiece and loved The Gleaners & I.

Vagabond is my top film by Varda, and would have made my top 10.

Biggest dozen snubs not counting films that showed up too low, or those already mentioned:

A Taste of Others (Agnes Jaoui)- she's made at least a couple that should be on the list

Enlightenment Guaranteed (Doris Dorrie)- much preferred Japanese Odyssey to Lost in Translation. Cherry Blossoms is another very good one by her.

Longing (Valeria Grisbach)- I liked this a lot better than Western

Carnages (Delphine Gleize)- Follows the remnants of a Bull's carcass from character to character to somewhat surreal and satirical effect.

The Secret Life of Words (Isabel Coixet)- This one is in English, and very well done by a fairly prolific contemporary filmmaker

Lore- (Cate Shortland)- excellent, exciting tale about two nazi children trying to escape to safety at the end of the war.

Vazante (Daniela Thomas)- Lucious B & W film about the Colonial Brazilian hinterland.

Los Perros (Marcela Said)- a love affair with one of Pinochet's former henchman

Even The Rain (Icier Bollain)- whilst making a movie about the conquest of Columbus, the film crew stumbles into a political situation....

Antonia's Line (Marleen Gorris)-expected this one to make it given its origins and established profile.

Chevalier- A very good contemporary satire about the ways of men that could be viewed as a double feature with Dorrie's Mannen

Angels Wear White (Vivian Qu)- a very good contemporary crime drama + from China

L'Avenir (Mia Hansen-Love)- did any of her films make it?

Asia represented by Ann Hui & Naomi Kawase  . Not familiar with Jae-eun Jeong, but not very hopeful looking at the other nominations.
and shu shuen tong (dong fu ren 1968) first female hk director @ #74

i nominated (*at least) 4 others :(

momoko ando
kinuyo tanaka
naoko ogigami
nam-ok park
Myeah, watched Dong Fu Ren some time ago. History and all, but can't say I enjoyed the film very much.

Naoko Ogigami is the biggest upset imo (taking this forum into account).
Also missing Mika Ninagawa, Mai Tominaga, Heiward Mak and Jiang Xiao (from the ones with multiple interesting films).

I watched The Love Witch a couple of days ago after seeing it get so close to the list. It's fun camp like a Russ Meyer film from the perspective of a woman, but as great as the visual design is it's not really that great as a complete film. Also the editing approaches Bohemian Rhapsody levels, and while it's more forgivable in a campy weird movie like this it's still distracting. Worth watching but surprising to see it rank that high.
