Thank you for hosting, Peaceful. Incredibly happy with the number one, and can't complain about 4 Varda's making the top 10, though like others I am also stunned by Muratova's absence.

There are 14 men in the list, so I do wonder what spots 151 to 164 are, if we had cleaned the list

SpoilerShow
The Ascent hasn't shown up yet, right?
I found it funny that Ivan's post missed the number one film.
I find it funny that I missed my own #3 film. So where did Zama end up in the end?
I'll do runners up tomorrow. I assume it'll be there.

Asia represented by Ann Hui & Naomi Kawase  . Not familiar with Jae-eun Jeong, but not very hopeful looking at the other nominations.

Thanks for doing this Peaceful. Very happy about 1-2 and how well Varda did in general; continue to not get the love for Sofia Coppola, she's my female Nolan I guess, though I do think I should give Lost in Translation another go. Also don't much appreciate The Matrix (or it's sequels) though I like most of the Wachowskis' other work and would have liked to see Cloud Atlas higher and Speed Racer make the list at all. Otherwise no real complaints - I agree that it's weird to see Muratova absent but I suspect not a lot of the voters have seen her work, rather than not liking it. Same goes for the work of several Iranian directors, especially Tahmineh Milani and Rakhshan Banietemad. Little early cinema - no Lois Weber for example. And most egregious of all, no Ida Lupino!

Oh well, them's the breaks. Several films on the lower part of the list that I'm not even familiar with that I will now investigate, and to me that's the best thing about these polls.

I saw through all the lists, and there "many" which voted for Weber's Hypocrites f.ex. But maybe not at the top of their lists. so it would need a lot of votes to get above 200 points.

Ehh, I think some of those 14 belong even on a pure list. Shrek is a full codirection, equally directed by both a man and a woman so it wouldn't be on a "pure" list. But just as Tarr's films would be on a hypothetical "pure" directed by a man list, Meshes in the Afternoon and Madchen in Uniform belong on any pure directed by a woman list. Their male co-directors are incidental credits due to circumstances not their role in the film. I'm sure other 'pure' films have male producers with the same kind of role Froelich had on Madchen, their credit just has a different name.

Yeah, kinda surprised that The Hitch-hiker didn’t make it in there somewhere. And with all those Denis films, I thought even as divisive as it may be, that Trouble Every Day would get enough support but I suppose not. I’m guessing these two films aren’t far back after the top 150.

Anyways, thanks Peaceful!

Glad to see My Twentieth Century and The Meetings of Anna so high on the list with the number of checks that they have. Oh, and I guess The Holy Girl is the highest Martel afterall.

Voted for 8 of the top 10, must be a new record for me, the two that I didn't vote for were both 6/10s, and probably need to rewatch. Also forgot to add The House Is Black and At Land when I was checking for shorts, oops.

Thanks Peaceful, one of the most exciting countdowns we've had!

Vardomination!!!

I'm sure they're out there, but I don't think I've ever heard of someone who didn't like Agnes Varda and/or her movies.

"Stan Brakhage, who knew the couple, has claimed in his book Film at Wit's End that Meshes was in fact largely Hammid's creation, and that their marriage began to suffer when Deren received more credit." Wikipedia page for Meshes in the Afternoon.
