Year-by-Year Polls: 1932

#1

Post by OldAle1 » March 24th, 2019, 2:55 pm

IMPORTANT! READ:
For this poll there will be a change in how to format your ballot: After you have listed your films, please then include a second full list (without numbers) of bare IMDb urls for those films, in the same order. This will take 5 more minutes than usual, but I ask for your co-operation and understanding as it will save me, your friendly volunteer host, many many hours (thanks to a clever new scoring spreadsheet). I won't be accepting your ballot unless it includes the IMDb urls (but will ping you and give you a chance to fix it). Thanks

Please note that I do not want actual IMDb lists, just the urls so that I can copy and paste them.

Rules:

- Reply here with a list of titles you've seen from 1932, followed by a list of IMDb urls for the same films. You can vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 films.

- Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies and TV mini-series are all eligible, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

- We use IMDb dates for consistency, so a title should be listed on IMDb as 1932.

- Your ballot can be either ranked, partially ranked, or unranked. If it's not fully ranked - please state that clearly.

- You may update your ballot at any time before the poll closes (remember to also change your urls list!)

The scoring:

You may list choices in order of preference, in which case your top film will receive a number of points equal to the number of films in your list up to 20, with each next-ranked film receiving one fewer point; or in no order, in which case each film will receive the same number of points. So, for example, if you only vote for 5 ranked films, your top film will receive 5 points and your 5th-place film will receive 1 point. If you vote for 20 unranked films, each film will receive 10.5 points; if you vote for 5 unranked films, each film will receive 3 points, etc. Partially ranked ballots will use both of these systems.

Some resources:

1932 films you've rated on IMDb

1932 films sorted by most votes on IMDb

1932 films you've checked on ICM

1932 films you *haven't* checked on ICM

This poll will run for at least three weeks, probably closing on Sunday April 14.

The next poll will be for 1972 followed by 1942.

FYI I is barely computer literate, so I'll need help from whoever created the new spreadsheet thingie - how to download, change, fix, etc. Was that maxwell? Anyway thanks in advance I'm sure I'll call on whoever it was when it's time to do results.

Nah, this takes less than 30 seconds extra. The easiest way to compile this is to export your ratings from IMDb and filter that on year and sort by rating and then fine-tune. The export has the urls ready, so it's a matter of copy paste.

Assuming you use IMDb, but most here do.

Maxwelldeux is indeed the person who created the spreadsheet for us, and I would also appreciate a tutorial on the spreadsheet since I'm going to be running the 1972 poll next month.

I'm always available for debugging/tutorials. There are two versions depending on your needs - Google Sheets (available to everyone) and Excel (available to those with Excel). I think the Excel one is a bit easier to work with, but neither are too hard.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

a Good year for William Powell and Kay Francis, both separately and together.

Predictions?

The Lubitsch, maybe... or maybe FREAKS for the top spot

But the Von Sternbergs (SHANGHAI EXPRESS and BLONDE VENUS) , Leroy's prison escapee , the Whale , the all-star HOTEL.and The Marzx Bros will all do well.

Obscurities?

DEVIL AND THE DEEP doesn't have much of a rep - but is without a doubt the most glamorous submarine movie you are ever likely to see - with a superb finale as the sub sinks. Double bill it with BLACK SEA for a modern spin on the old tin can drama - with an equally exciting finish as the sub floods compartment by compartment.....

1932 is sadly one of the years that has impressed me the least, and is arguably the weakest year of the 30s (even worse by being squeezed between '31 and '33, which are among the best of the 30s - may just have been a statistically unfortunate event of release dates).

I tried to explore more (foreign language) films before this event, created a watchlist, and saw 7 new viewing over the last 5 weeks. Of these only 3 made the below top 20, and they landed towards the bottom, but at least I tried to spice it up a little. Still not seen: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls046048461/

1. I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932, Mervyn LeRoy) 9.5/10
2. The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933, Frank Capra) 9/10
3. Grand Hotel (1932, Edmund Goulding)
4. Fanny (1932, Marc Allégret) 8.5/10
5. Otona no miru ehon - Umarete wa mita keredo / I Was Born, But... (1932, Yasujiro Ozu)
6. American Madness (1932, Frank Capra)
7. Shanghai Express (1932, Josef von Sternberg)
8. Three on a Match (1932, Mervyn LeRoy)
9. Jewel Robbery (1932, William Dieterle)
10. Nasanunaka / No Blood Relation (1932, Mikio Naruse)
11. Downstairs (1932, Monta Bell) 8/10
12. La tavola dei poveri / Table for the Poor (1932, Alessandro Blasetti)
13. Les croix de bois / Wooden Crosses (1932, Raymond Bernard)
14. The Mouthpiece (1932, James Flood & Elliott Nugent)
15. Daïnah la métisse (1932, Jean Gremillon)
16. Poil de carotte / The Red Head (1932, Julien Duvivier)
17. Trouble in Paradise (1932, Ernst Lubitsch)
18. A Farewell to Arms (1932, Frank Borzage) 7,5/10
19. 20,000 Years in Sing Sing (1932, Michael Curtiz)
20. One Way Passage (1932, Tay Garnett)

I have no idea whether IMDB is accurate, but it lists a couple of Christmas showings in 1932 and has it labeled as '32 on the main reference page. Is it from an export field that shows '33 now?

Fuck IMDb and this willy-nilly date changing. Executive decision: Bitter Tea is 1932 for the purposes of this poll, whether it gets changed back again before the poll ends or not.

The Most Dangerous Game is an interesting film for those interested in the Zodiac Killer case. Chances are, he's seen it (or read the novel), or heard about it and that his phrase "the most dangerous anamal" (sic) in his decoded 408-cipher was referencing it. Makes it even more scary!

honorable mention tehe

I really like La Cartomancienne but I think this contemporary score does a lot more justice to it's mystic visuals. But then it might just be my taste. soz jerry hill.

Thanks for including this -- probably will be in my top 10, and even though I checked my list not that long ago, I didn't have it in there. Wonder if it's one of those notorious year changes that occurred recently....

Thanks for pointing it out. I had missed that too. I don't know about recently, but yes Queen Kelly has changed years a few times.
