There were film performances that were splitted between the leading and the supporting categories. All the points of that performance will be combined in the category with the most points.

To limit the length of the list, more than 1 mention or a landing of a #1 ranking are required to be listed. The film poll also required at least 20 points for the non #1 films.

Tie breaker is # of mentions followed by the film with a higher ranking and then the next higher ranking, etc.

After this poll, we will be returning to our regular Year-by-Year poll for 1932, followed by 1972.

Without further ado, here are our films and performances of 2018:

Ooh yay, results and pretty tables :circle:

Though I'll be using this as a recommendation list, 2018 seems to be a pretty bad year for film based on what I've seen on this list so far...

I knew that I should have left Emma Stone off my ballot. <_< Without the extra nine points from me, we would have had an amazingly justified tied win in the Supporting Actress field.

Very interesting results; thanks for compiling them. Tickled pink to see my #2 of the year triumphantly win here. I feel little unadventurous though with all of my acting #1s coming either first or second.

Oh, and I think that Ethan Hawke's winning margin is probably the largest since these polls ever started on the CFB. :o

Thank you for hosting Rufus. I have to sat I'm surprised The Favourite won. Part of the reason I suddenly jumped in and marathoned through the top of my watchlist was to be able to support it - and now I see my vote was not ever needed. :D

I'm missing a lot of the top films still, so should have a lot of goodies to come.

Same here. From the top 10 I've only seen #2 and #3.

Thanks, Rufus. :worship:
I'm actually more surprised by Annihilation being #3, I know it's liked a lot by others, but didn't know it's loved that much by that many.

Availability must have helped: it's on Netflix for anyone outside the US, and it's been out since March.

Also, Blade Runner 2049 was #3 last year. I wonder how much overlap there is between the voters there (I know I'm one). Artsy sci-fi mafia ? :ph43r:

Good stuff, thanks Rufus. Kind of shocked that I managed to see as many as I did - 8 of the top 10. No real surprises or major disappointments, other than my own disappointment for not having yet seen a lot of stuff further down the list.

re: Annihilation/Blade Runner - the former was high on my list, the latter not even an also-ran last year. I certainly like plenty of "arty" SF but the Blade Runner sequel really didn't do it for me apart from the admittedly impressive visuals.

Personally, I don't like the fact that movies with one vote end up on the final list. I use the forum lists to find recommendations to watch on Netflix by cross-referencing all those lists with the list of movies on Netflix. But honestly I'm not interested in watching a movie that happened to be loved by a single user and nobody else. There's a 6.5 hour documentary at the bottom of this list that happens to be on Netflix. I'm going to skip that one.

Thanks, Rufus!

I’m also (pleasantly) surprised that Annihilation placed so highly, I figured it was too divisive in its reception to secure such a high spot. Pretty cool that it seems quite well liked here.

Kind of an unnecessary comment, IMO.

Can’t you just make an ICM list for yourself with only the films that had at least 2 votes then, for your personal use?

The final list is everything with as many points as a #1 film, plus #1 films. That's kind of by design. I wouldn't look at anything near the bottom of the list as anything but a rec from the voters who voted for it. Seems weird to look at the whole thing as unqualified recommendations, just like when people look at the "all nominees" lists for our polls and find the weird stuff hanging out way off the main list.

There's a difference between the all-votes-lists and these lists, because these are presented as "official" results and leave out movies that didn't get enough points.

I've been doing this total crossreference for a few weeks now and so far I enjoy it. It makes me watch stuff I would have skipped otherwise and already had some pleasant surprises.

@GruesomeTwosome: I don't think it's a unnecessary comment. At other polls we avoid 1-vote movies in the final results. We even try to avoid 2-vote movies as well.
But maybe I'll do what you suggest. Takes some time to create such a list, but it might be useful.

Very interesting to look at. So there were a group of films that scored between 10 and 20pts but were not included because there were no #1s? Do you have a full list?

Thanks Rufus. A shame there weren't more votes for the acting categories.

Also, 5 non-English films in the top 10?!

As someone who usually finds the most interesting things at the bottom of result lists (less middle-of-the-road, crowd-pleasers), I like the inclusion of the #1s.

Edit: like the screenshot of Sorry To Bother You, looks like Lynch's Rabbits :)

:ph43r:
Yes it has a good availability. But that isn’t the reason for it, since it has the least mentions of all in the top 6.

Well, I was one who ranked Annihilation at #1. I didn't have Blade Runner 2049 ranked that high last year (I think it was in the mid-20's on my list). For me, Annihilation had the most scenes that stuck with me. Even if it wasn't a perfect film, two scenes (The Bear and the Mimic) would've been in my top 3 scenes of the year.

Beautifully done, Rufus, thank you! I wasn't sure which film would win but I guess it's all in the title. I've seen 7 from the top 10, looking forward to the other three.

I'm surprised that The Rider missed out. I didn't include it due to date purity, but I thought a few others here would have it on their list. It's a great little film.

It was on my list to see, just didn't get around to it. But one of my friends offsite picked it as his favorite of the year; he's somebody I agree with somewhat often but he's certainly got his eccentricities and I would love to know why he picked it. He writes reviews also but they are immense - 2-4,000 words typically and he always spoils the entire plot - every single detail - so I never read any of them until after seeing the films, and this is the only film from his top 10 that I haven't seen yet. So maybe I'll get to it soon.

The bottom three are the most interesting to me (the middle one of course being my number one pick, which was fantastic). Twisted Pair and La Flor sound insane and are two of my most anticipated films of last year. On that note, is there an IMDb or ICM list of every nominated film? That would be great!

I forgot to mention, congratulation to you guys for busting my watchlist  However, I will take a break from movies for a little while before getting back to my overfilled watchlist.

Regarding film list cut off, I personally also interested in the bottom part of the list. I would have prefer listing everything mentioned without minimum film mention or cut-off points. I understand the rationale about minimum # of films mentioned, as explained by joachimt. Also the list can get too long. There were a brief discussion within our small group about having some minimum film requirement as well. If a film is ranked the best by someone, I thought it is worth a recognition so I included all # 1 ranked no matter how many points, at least for this annual poll anyway. One film I particularly interested in is La flor, a 13 1/2 hrs epic. I don't know where to find it yet.

As requested by yllow and for those who are interested, here are the rest of the films in alphabetical order that did not made the cut. There are some music videos and some live stand-up.

Ha, didn't notice until now that those two Best Pic nominees (Bohemian Rhapsody and Vice) didn't even make our top 97 list. That's a good thing of course.

Yeah that’s kinda funny. I think it’s only an “OK” film (at best), so I’m content to see it absent in the film poll results.

I'm going to skip that one.
im baffled no one else voted for it. was it because its miniseries? top tier of the decad for sure
if we are talking about Wild Wild Country here

Thanks for the full results of films mentioned but yes a bit of an odd list with all those music videos and tons of 2017 releases too.

that's my responsibility and I was mostly on an internet-holiday for the last 10 days - didn't start out intentional. But I should be able to start it shortly.
