3.39 31 Captain Fantastic (2016)
3.55 34 Captains Courageous (1937)
3.69 17 Davandeh [The Runner] (1984)
3.44 9 Jariskatsis mama [Father of a Soldier] (1965)
4.57 15 Je t'attendrai [The Deserter] (1939)
3.56 10 Meru (2015)
4.67 3 Professor Mamlock (1961)
3.5 4 Right of Way (1983)
2.12 37 The Room (2003)
3.41 18 The Slender Thread (1965)
3.46 26 Under Sandet [Land of Mine] (2015)
2.56 10 Up (1984)

No surprises, really. Finally got one in (that I shamelessly stole). I think I'm done with trying to get The Slender Thread on the list. I'll probably try again with a few others though. Professor Mamlock for sure, but, more people need to see it. Davandeh probably as well. Honestly, that's the one I'm most heartbroken not making it. At least it's still on a few lists. The result for Up is a little disappointing, but, that's what happens when you share a short on here. LOL. Hopefully some who watched it enjoyed it at least a little..

My holdover from last year (Hollywood) remains a holdover.

Thanks Angel and Peaceful for all the work you guys put into it! Really looking forward to the process again next year!

I have never understood the hype about Hong Sang-soo. I think his films are quite boring, nothing much seems to happen, and the cinematography (etc.) is not very exciting either.

And can someone explain again the criteria for the holdovers? I searched all the old threads in the forum and couldn't find the answer, and the link to the old site doesn't work anymore.
It was in all of Angel's results posts:

-Holdovers:
7 votes / rating 4,00 and above
6 votes / rating 4,17 and above
5 votes / rating 4,40 and above
4 votes / rating 4,75 and above
3 votes / rating 5,33 and above
2 votes / rating 6,0
 Thanks. I'll see myself out.
I searched "holdover" in the advanced search function, but didn't search for "holdovers". And I think I just ignore everything in the results posts except the results themselves. :innocent:

Oh, and it appears that some gay porn (LA Plays Itself) is now official, to balance the past demotion of El Paso Wrecking Corp.? Hrm.
Seems you're right. I haven't seen either, but I thought it was the 2003 doc that was nominated, didn't realize they had slightly different titles (LA Plays Itself vs Los Angeles Plays Itself) and ignored the years. I suspect it's the experimental aspect that people voted for as opposed to the porn aspect... the experimental mafia was strong this year and seemingly well-coordinated :D

Interesting to see 'Tonka Šibenice' perform as well as it did and make the cut. It's another one I had meant to prioritise last month but unfortunately ended up forgetting about.

Asquith's lovely, energetic, and wonderfully rewarding 'Underground' is such a fine film. Very pleased to see it succeed!

'Valurile dunarii' is a holdover. Nice - I admire the tension and atmosphere of wartime danger that Ciulei builds through interaction, distrust and uncertainty. On the other hand, it's sad to see that Christensen's contemplative, moving 'Viagem aos Seios de Duília' lost its holdover status. Rodolfo Mayer's performance in that haunting film will forever stay with me.

A little disappointing to see that the exquisite and sad 'Un été inoubliable' polled at 3.00 with a relatively large vote. Kristin Scott Thomas sparkles with pride and luminous vibrancy and the political undercurrent is deftly handled by Pintilie. The film deserved a higher score, I think.

I read with happiness about 'Zhila-byla devochka' being added to Karagarga. It's such a beautiful film of two young girls during the siege of Leningrad and the hardships and difficulties they endure. I hope subtitles can be made for it. I might try nominating it again next year.

Thanks for the presentation, Angel. Some lovely additions this year!

I wonder how many of the film's 11 voters had the very same confusion. I mean, this film was rated *4.30*. Anyone want to confess?

I haven't rated anything below a 6/10 ('Donovan's Reef' and 'Ruby Gentry') on the DtC 2019 list - so it looks like a great selection. Nice to go through the list and see all the wonderful titles that made it!

'Possible Worlds' was my nom this year, actually, and never had been nominated before, at least not since 2014. Sorry 'bout that. But more importantly, I don't see the film appearing anywhere on the list, neither the IMDb nor the iCM one. ANGEL!!!

I can thank you for '21 X New York' and 'Scream of the Ants', though, both films I watched because they were nominated, and they became big personal favorites. 'The Sea That Thinks' I also appreciated a lot but that one already goes back to the 1>500<400 Challenge.

iCM rankings updated for the new list. :D

Image

I only lost one Official Check with the new update (+9 new Official Checks; -10 old Official Checks).

I did, however, lose 35 checks on the updated list. :(

My ranking has, however, remained much the same despite a 35-film loss, from rank #223 down to rank #230. :shifty:

So by bringing it up I succeeded in having the rightful title take the place of a title that unrightfully snuck in, only to have that title be my own unsuccessful holdover from two years ago...
I'm glad I could help to iron out a mistake anyway.

They're usually comedies, if you're not laughing your ass off most of the way through they're not working. The Korean audiences get this. You go to a western arthouse cinema and the audience glares at the one of two of us laughing like we're mad people. The people in his movies are usually exceptionally flawed and narcissistic, it's true though that he draws this out fairly subtly throughout most of the movies.

no need - I double checked that while doing my ballot for exactly the El Lay Plays confusion. Thus why tracking tt numbers is so much useful than names alone.

I wonder how many of the film's 11 voters had the very same confusion. I mean, this film was rated *4.30*. Anyone want to confess?
Oh boy, will this result in a recount?
Thank goodness we don't have any Turkish mods or we'd have to rerun the balloting phase.

Went from 432 seen to 390. Only lost 1 in the ranking 139-140. (I was afraid it was going to be much worse.)

I went from 811 to 780 checks on the list, but my ranking remained stable at #16, nice… hope to be back at 811 at least, before the end of the year
I think I gained a lot of new official checks though, but my global ranking and official checks count doesn't seem to reflect that (yet)

no need - I double checked that while doing my ballot for exactly the El Lay Plays confusion. Thus why tracking tt numbers is so much useful than names alone.
Well, so YOUR vote was legitimate...that's one of 11 confirmed.

General note: I went up five slots with the update, despite losing 32 checks.

'Possible Worlds' was my nom this year, actually, and never had been nominated before, at least not since 2014. Sorry 'bout that. But more importantly, I don't see the film appearing anywhere on the list, neither the IMDb nor the iCM one. ANGEL!!!
My fault!

#725 should be Possible Worlds (2000) instead of Zwischen zwei Kriegen (1978)!!!
Fixed on ICM

The Lost Room (2006) 4,33-10

Looks like one of my former nominations tipped into DtC territory!

Alas, my holdover from last year narrowly missed :-(

I did a little digging into some of favorites that seem to be eternal holdovers in this game:

Papa, umer ded moroz (Daddy, Father Frost Is Dead) [1991]
nominated by me 2015 - 5.00/2 (no holdover)
nominated by me 2017 - 5.25/4 -> holdover
2018 - 4.33/6
2019 - 4.14/7

Pafnucio Santo [1977]
results 2015 - 5.00/4 (holdover)
2016 - 5.40/5
2017 - 4.83/6
2018 - 4.83/6
2019 - 5.29/7

Abendland / Nightfall (Fred Kelemen, 1999)
nominated by insomnius 2016 - 5.60/5 (holdover)
2017 - 5.60/5
2018 - 4.71/7
2019 - 5.14/7

These three need only one more vote to make a decent chance of entering the list. I hope some kind soul will watch them in the coming year. Why wait untill a deadline next year, make them a priority now! :)

are there any long time succesfull failures that are favorites of yours? shout them out and I would give them a watch, if I haven't seen them already!

I plan on seeing the holdovers after I finish the DtC list. Not working until January at the earliest so I'll definitely finish the list before the next edition is due.

These 3 were leftovers since 2017:

Fei cheng [Ghost Town] (2009) 4,43-7
Germinal (1913) 4,40-5
The Red Thread (1994) 4,14-7

And this was a holdover since 2018:

Tagebuch eines Liebenden [Diary of a Lover] (1977) 5,20-5

I can see you liking Fei cheng [Ghost Town]. Not sure about Germinal, maybe if you're a fan of early silent films. It's incredibly ambitious. The Red Thread is recommended if you enjoy experimental films, but I suggest seeing Misery Loves Company first to know if you'll like The Red Thread or not.

Tagebuch eines Liebenden [Diary of a Lover] is amazing, and is great for fans of slow and bleak misery porn. It's by Saless too who is an amazing director. However, the quality of the VHS is practically unwatchable. It even completely glitches out at one point and you only see static. I don't know how any of the characters look like because it's so dark. Still, even with that, the film itself is phenomenal.

this is the only thing that has kept me away from it, sadly…

but there are some good other suggestions here that I hadn't put on my radar yet, will check them out!

I watched Papa, umer ded moroz a couple days ago. So unless one of the 7 voters skips next year it will at least have the minimum number of votes.

seems to already have enough votes, but just not enough support
I haven't seen it yet and I like the director, but I do not to expect to rate it high enough to have an impact on the Doubling score, so I won't prioritise it...

I watched Abendland after last year’s update and had hoped my 6/6 vote would help push it over the line but it seems like someone forgot to vote.
