People should be obliged to include IMDb-links, so it saves PA LOTS of time.
I don't know about obligated, but I certainly appreciate imdb links.

Noted. It's a rather simple thing to do for most of us i guess.

Anyone starting an unofficial nomination challenge ?

Absolutely! Anyone who disagrees should really think about the time it takes volunteers like Angel, PA and frbrown, they don't have to do it.

Most of us might be a stretch. I do not use IMDB, and will not create one to submit a list. “Obligated” to sign up to that shit site to submit a list kind of pisses me off.

No one's asking for a list on imdb, just including the imdb urls in your post like some people have done. You don't need an account for that.

Edited my list to remove Profit Motive and the Whispering Wind as it's on the 21st century list. Replaced it with Wisconsin Death Trip.

re: imdb, you can even just right-click copy link location on the imdb button on iCM. there's two of 'em on every movie's page, there's the little button farthest left immediate from the check box (looks like an arrow coming out of two sides of a squared box) or the "view IMDB information" button underneath the film's information, approximately in the middle of the screen. You don't even have to go on imdb to get imdb links!

Is there also going to be an ICM list of the nominees this year to keep track of progress?

For once I decided to play it relatively smart, avoiding to re-champion films ad-nauseam that just never got close to the finish line, such as Motforestilling, Panic in Needle Park, I Am an Elephant Madam or From Morn to Midnight - though, I have to admit, my long crusade to get Aa Bakudan (3.85 last time) will continue - how could it not?!

I also looks back over previous results. Devastating to see the Robbe-Grillet masterpieces Eden and After and La Belle Captive fail miserably, the same goes for the fantastic Karl May - but I'll get over it. Going even further I made sure I didn't nominate any films that would be dead on arrival. I would love to push Mirages de Paris or Der Hauptmann von Köpenick, but when you don't even have 8 checks, chances are you won't get 8 votes.

With improved research and less optimism I am hoping my nominations actually stand a proper chance this time around.

I am however re-championing some films that got dangerously close, such as Jane B. par Agnes V. and Die Parallelstrasse, which lost out by 0.2 and 0.7 respectively last time around, and The Toth Family, which scored a 4.00, but missed 2 votes.

-----

My votes:

Édes Anna / Sweet Anna (1958, Zoltan Fabri)
Die Parallelstrasse / The Parallel Street (1962, Ferdinand Khittl)
Aa bakudan / Oh, Bomb (1964, Kihachi Okamoto)
Tízezer nap / Ten Thousand Days (1967, Ferenc Kósa)
Nikudan / The Human Bullet (1968, Kihachi Okamoto)
Erosu purasu gyakusatsu / Eros + Massacre (1969, Yoshishige Yoshida)
Isten hozta örnagy úr / The Toth Family(1969, Zoltan Fabri)
Moi, Pierre Rivière, ayant égorgé ma mère, ma soeur et mon frère... (1976, René Allio)
Prénom Carmen (1983, Jean-Luc Godard)
À l'ombre de la canaille bleue / In the Shadow of the Blue Rascal (1986, Pierre Clémenti)
Jane B. par Agnès V. (1988, Agnès Varda)
La deuxième nuit (2016, Eric Pauwels)

That is very true, she has risen for me as well, climbing my top directors list from a relatively anonymous lower spot and well into my top 20.

This also means one of the craziest, both visually and "story-wise" Soviet comedies, My Grandmother, gets a new shot. It is absolutely fantastic (and was banned for going on a full-on attack against bureaucracy).

Here are my suggestions :

1 La fin du jour, by Julien Duvivier (1939)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031309/reference

One of Duvivier's most nostalgic piece, on a retirement home for artists and actors, with great performances by Louis Jouvet and Michel Simon.

2 Merci la vie, by Bertrand Blier (1991)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102436/

One of Blier's saddest surreal movie on how absurd and harsh life may seem... The duo of actress, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Anouk Grinberg have a great chemistry, and are like a mirror, feminine reflection of the pair of Gérard Depardieu and Patrick Dewaere in Les valseuses.

3 Liza, a rókatündér, aka Liza, the Fox Fairy, by Károly Ujj Mészáros (2015)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2210769/

I'm still pushing this one, as I noticed it has been seen during a few past challenges... It's a light approach to hungarian cinema, and a sweet comedy.

4 Go do gaai bei, aka Full Alert, by Ringo Lam (1997)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0134664/

This is a choice that bounced in the past, but Ringo Lam died a few weeks ago, and I'm hoping the chinese challenge has brought new viewers to watch this hardboiled thriller...

5 Eldorado, by Bouli Lanners (2008)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1176954/

As Bouli Lanners is gaining recognition as a major belgian director, I would like to suggest watching this early film of his, which is a pure gem.

6 L'autre, by Patrick-Mario Bernar & Pierre Trividic (2008)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1171704/

This is an atmospheric, lynchian film, with a fantastic approach to the dostoievskian theme of the doppelganger. Unexpected in french cinema...

7 Omocha, by Kinji Fukasaku (1998)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0205963/

Fukasaku's childhood memories on geisha houses produced this sweet and sour film, quite an unusual production for this director, but it's certainly worth a watch.

8 Rozmarné léto, by Jiri Menzel (1968)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063527/

A wonderful czech film, and a great adaptation of a classic. I'm surprised this one doesn't get more love, actually...

9 Umi to dokuyaku aka The Sea and Poison, by Kei Kumai (1986)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092128/

Based on true facts : american pilots were vivisected by civilian japanese doctors in 1945. Based on the minutes of the post-WW2 trials, this film tries to understand how such an action could be taken. It is certainly a rough, unpleasant, film, but it is certainly thought-provoking and deep.

10 Next of Kin, by Tony Williams (1982)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084408/

A great, intense australian horror film. With an unforgettable score by Klaus Schulze, and a very inventive and scary direction.

11 Hanare goze Orin aka Ballad of Orin, by Masahiro Shinoda (1977)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076124/

The life story of a blind japanese musician during the early militarization of Japan. Very well-made, Shinoda's sense of photography is a constant amazement.

12 Oasiseu, by Lee Chang-Dong (2002)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0320193/

Lee Chang-Dong's most intense love story, and an intense, hard to forget, film...

Apologies for my confusion, this is my first time really participating in this process. I have a couple of questions:

1. This step in the process is to nominate 12 films for inclusion in the DtC list. Am I reading correctly that my nominations will need to be nominated by 7 other people to guarantee placement on the final ballot? If so I will probably just support others' nominations since I doubt my nominations will get that much support.
2. Movies that are ineligible include: TSPDT films and TSPDT 21st century films. Movies already nominated for the ballot are the movies on Peaceful Anarchy's list from #64. Is this correct?

Thank you everyone for helping me get up to speed here!

No, every nominated movie will be on the ballot. In order to get on the final list a movie need to get at least 8 votes and the average need to be higher than *to be determined*.

I haven't checked PA's list (but I trust him), but ineligible are:
- Current TSPDT and 21st
- Dropoffs from TSPDT and 21st (because they are autonominated)
- Holdovers from last year (movies with high enough score but not enough votes will be autonominated next year)
- Revotes (do we revote movies this year?)
- Movies already nominated by others
- Movies from 2018 and 2019

Did I forget anything? Even after several years I'm still not 100% sure.

I'll just do that. :D
In the meantime, I'm replacing Oasis with Five Star Final, by Mervyn LeRoy (1931)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0021873/

A great pre-code on the cruelty of newspapers... Still very relevant today, one would just need to replace the papers with FB or other social networks...

Very helpful, thank you! So now I'm seeing that I may want to nominate films that aren't on anyone else's lists to cast a wider net in the ballot. The drawback is that there might not be support for them during the ballot phase!

Thank you again for your help :)

I see. Slipped under the cracks, with such a prominent one-time-only placement (#932)...
I've replaced it with:

Twice a Man (Gregory J. Markopoulos, 1964) :imdb: :ICM:

PA, please also make note of the titles in your IMDb and iCM nominations lists that aren't yet listed on the respective sites, usually they were added in the description, and often times some good souls will have submitted the missing titles to the two sites by the time the voting stage is under way. In my case they would be those two:

Incidence of Catastrophe (Gary Hill, 1988) - -
Samouraï / Samurai (Johanna Vaude, 2002) - -

By the way, Incidence of Catastrophe is available on Volume 3 of the 3-laserdisc set "Gary Hill: Spinning the Spur of Moment", a selection of Gary Hills' work. And Samouraï can be found on Johanna Vaude's short films collection DVD, available on many of the Amazon sites and on the re-voir site (if it loads), just in case in helps submitting them to IMDb...or just makes it easier for people to find.

Here is my whole, updated nominations list again for simplicity's sake

Twice a Man (Gregory J. Markopoulos, 1964) :imdb: :ICM:
Visa de censure n° X (Pierre Clémenti, 1967) :imdb: :ICM:

Jue lie / Breaking with Old Ideas (Wenhua Li, 1976) :imdb: :ICM:
Ace of Light (Dennis Pies, 1984) :imdb: :ICM:
Naked Spaces: Living Is Round (T. Minh-ha Trinh, 1985) :imdb: :ICM:
Incidence of Catastrophe (Gary Hill, 1988) - -
Passion (Jürgen Reble, 1990) :imdb: :ICM:
Possible Worlds (Robert Lebage, 2000) :imdb: :ICM:
Samouraï / Samurai (Johanna Vaude, 2002) - -

Profit & nothing but! or impolite thoughts on the class struggle (Raoul Peck, 2001) :imdb: :ICM:
This is already nominated, I believe. Drop off from last year's 21st century list?
I see. Slipped under the cracks, with such a prominent one-time-only placement (#932)...
I've replaced it with:

Tableau noir (Yves Yersin, 2013) :imdb: :ICM:

PA, please also make note of the titles in your IMDb and iCM nominations lists that aren't yet listed on the respective sites, usually they were added in the description, and often times some good souls will have submitted the missing titles to the two sites by the time the voting stage is under way. In my case they would be those two:

Incidence of Catastrophe (Gary Hill, 1988) - -
Samouraï / Samurai (Johanna Vaude, 2002) - -
updated. I actually had put those in the description, but I forgot to click the little checkmark imdb now requires you to click to save changes.

OK, cool.
Sorry, I replaced my replacement title again when I realized that it isn't available yet with English subs (see my previous post).
