iCM Forum World Cup - Season 3 - Semi Finals preparation

#1

Post by joachimt » February 11th, 2019, 5:55 pm

One week left in the quarter finals, so let's have a place to prepare the semi finals. You can discuss about it whatever you want to discuss, but managers shouldn't post their selected movies here. Instead they should PM them to me.

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT YOUR MOVIE: February 23rd
Countdown till deadline

Decisions about the semi finals:
- 2 matches of each 2 countries.
- Pace will be 2 weeks per match with 0.5 week overlap.
- First match starts February the 24th.
- Country with most #1 votes proceeds to finals. In case of a tie, there is a three-day extension.

Guidelines for managers to choose a movie:
- Less than 1000 checks (at the moment the movie is picked).
- Maximum runtime of 180 minutes.
- Only one movie per director for a country in the whole season. A director with movies in multiple countries can be chosen once for each country.
- No movies from season 1 or season 2.
- Coproductions are allowed, but with an explanation why a movie certainly belongs to the country it competes for.

Countries that won their match in the quarter finals, so they proceed to the semi finals:
A: Greece (Mia aioniotita kai mia mera, tommy_leazaq)
B: England (Of Time and the City, funkybusiness)
C: Japan (Kawaita hana, monty)
D: USA (The Mudge Boy, filmbantha)

I'll completely randomize the matches, so nothing like "movies that competed each other in round 1...". I didn't even check if that would still apply though.

It no longer applies. Would have if Poland & USA or Croatia & Burkina Faso had won their respective Round 3 matches

So we've got Greece, England, Japan and USA in the semi finals. Managers have a little less than 6 days to decide their next pick.

currently working thru such film lists (besides TV): 2010s bests, RW Fassbinder, Luis Bunuel, Yasujiro Ozu, Eric Rohmer, Visual Effects nominees, kid-related stuff, great animes (mini-serie or feature), very 80s movies, 17+ sci-fi lists on watchlist, ENVIRO, remarkable Silent Films and Pre-Code (exploring 1925 atm) and every shorts and docu list I'm aware of and

and "Gordon" Liu Chia-Hui/Liu Chia-Liang and Yuen Woo-ping and "Sammo" Hung Kam-bo

I think the semi-finalists from the first two seasons were also worthy: Hungary, Japan, Poland, Spain & Egypt, Italy, Spain, United States.
If you look at repeat semi-finalists, Japan, Spain, and the US have all reached this stage twice.

Had it been France instead of Greece it would have been perfect but as a Greece manager I won't complain

Japan would have been 3 out of 3, had not been for a offbeat choice in Fish Story which enabled Egypt to make a surprise entry.

Not sure England would be in my top 10, or Greece in my top 20.

No way, you're just being a contrarian for the sake of it. Next thing you'll tell us is Vietnam, Belgium and Nicaragua are your top 3.

Off the top of me noggin—

USA
Iran
France
Russia
Japan
Poland
Sweden

That’s 7 that are for sure ahead of England for me. They’re in a big mess of a group after that along with China, hk, Taiwan, Hungary, Canada and Spain. I’d even put India near that tier if counting quality over quantity; Nothing from England can touch any of ray’s masterpieces.
