A lot of animal close-ups this year!

From the films I have seen I have enjoyed almost all of them and the rest seems very promising as well.

I didn't vote in this poll, but I'll be very interested to see the final top 200. So...thanks, Joachim.

The only two I didn’t vote for haven’t shown up yet. I thought they were the weakest, cause kids just aren’t that good in articulating their opinions yet (generally speaking), but I guess they are the most watched. But then again if somebody watched these and liked it so much to vote for it, why wouldn’t that somebody also watch the others. So maybe others did think the first two to be actually the best.

I prefer the two first because at that age they actually tell the truth.

I also voted for 42 as that is closest to my age. They look very old compared to me though, must be all those trips down to the pub.

In the last months some users participated in mocking and scorning users for watching movies because they are official. Just a day or two ago, Ebbywebby wrote a comment, addressing those who disagree with him with "you're not watching movies for the right reasons". When I nominated Miejsce urodzenia two years ago for DtC it was so unknown that it became a left over for the next year. During the following year, the mods adopted the Lodz Film Museum's Best Polish Films list, thereby making Birthplace official. Suddenly the movie became interesting, also to Ebbywebby who watched it shortly thereafter. The official status created enough visibility for it to have enough voters in the following DtC round, and as it is a tour de force masterpiece, it easily made the cut. And while I was confident that it would make this list, I'm happily surprised that it entered so high (it still has only 75 checks). I just wished some people would stop downplaying the impact the icm's gamification aspect has on their own viewing habits, rather than projecting that suggestibility to other users.

OMG I forgot to to for Encounters At The End Of The World. I very much like that movie, the scene where they conclude how complex a single cell organism is, has influenced my thinking to a certain degree.

Throwback to when I wanted to watch Leviafan (2014) https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/leviafan/

and only realised after 20 minutes of seeing dead fish and water that I was watching Leviathan (2012) https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/leviathan-2012/

Was not disappointed though. Now I saw I forgot to add it to my list as I hadn't checked it yet.

Not sure I'm getting the gist of your post, but isn't this kind of echo chambering exactly why people are mocking the official status-only watchers?

I think my post was straight forward and easy to grasp. You just quoted the gist of my post and I don't understand what you're referencing with "this kind of echo chambering".
Also I didn't write anything about those who mock "official status-only watchers". My post was about those who mock people for doing something they themselves are doing (Being influenced by the official status of a movie). My post is not about those users who have a very high unofficial/official check ratio due to not being influenced (like you say you are, something I so far have no reason or desire to doubt).

If anything, the Up series is a damning indictment of the British dental system.

See, then I didn't really get the gist of your post :)

The way I read it you did, the film you then referenced would be a perfect example of why people would "mock" those people, since it only rose in fame after it surfaced in an official list. My mistake though!

Ahhh, I understand. Yes, it is a good example. I also think that people who are truly unconcerned with the officialness of a movie, like you seem to be, tend to be somewhat more relaxed about the matter, and have a lesser inkling to mock those who are.

-----

The Highland triology hasn't popped up so far, Black Harvest is surely appearing later in this list, but I'm worried about the first two installments, First Contact and Joe Leahy's Neighbours not making it (I specifically watched them both for this vote), which is quite a shame as they are very good and set the stage for Black Harvest. But unlike Black Harvest, the first two are in no official lists, which is likely the main cause why they didn't make it (if in fact they didn't make it). It'll be another good example of how the official status is shaping viewing behavior. If you think of it, it's pretty unusual that a sequel of sequel makes it into the poll but not the original.
But it's also partly my fault, because this time I forgot to bribe Monty into submitting a list.
But it's not over till it's over, so I keep my fingers crossed.

Agree with your points mathias, but disagree with your love of those movies :D
Birthplace was only okay, though the first two Highlands films are almost as good as Black Harvest. The first one is only loosely connected, but the second definitely has more in common with BH. Still, you don't need to have seen the first two in order to understand what's happening in BH (indeed, I saw them in the order of 3-1-2), and perhaps going into BH blind gives more of an impact to people watching it.

FWIW, my ratings (incidentally saw all 4 last year):
Birthplace - 6.8
First Contact - 7.4
Joe Leahy - 7.6
Black Harvest - 7.6

Only BH made my list, though I was considering whether or not to add the other two Highlands films, they ultimately didn't make the cut.

@Fergenaprido: Wow, these are low ratings. Yes, Black Harvest is the best of the tree and while it's the culmination of the thirst two, it functions on its own - I also them 3-1-2. Black Harvest is so strong it made the last documentary poll with only 12 checks.

My ratings:

Birthplace: 10
First Contact: 9.5
Joe Leahy: 9.2
Black Harvest: 10

I mostly agree with you, but I don't fully agree with your remark people watch official movies only because of the gamification. Lots of people mostly watch official movies, but don't do that because of the gamification. I mostly watch official movies, because they are in some way recommendations, because I value the meaning of official lists. Surely, there are lists out there that could be a recommendation as well, but there are so many, I simply don't know where to start, so iCM mostly dictates my watches. When you nominated Birthplace for DtC the first time, to me it was just a random movie recommended by one user. It was one of the more than thousand nominees, so I had no reason at all to watch it. Becoming official surely is a push to watch it, so I absolutely agree with you that we shouldn't underestimate the meaning of becoming an official check, but gamification is not the only reason behind that.

People who watch lots of unofficial movies often do that with a certain plan. Onderhond watches a lot of unofficial movies, because he knows he loves a certain niche, so watching those gives him a higher chance of finding movies he loves. PUNQ watches lots of unofficial checks because he watches everything with a certain goal. Others watch unofficial movies because they dive into a certain director they are interested in. Etc...... I don't think there are a lot of people who randomly watch unofficial movies. You got to have some reason to do so.
