I think the hate for Dear Zachary is out of proportions. It's manipulative, sure, but it's still one of maybe 5 movies that actually could tear me up. The director put his whole soul in it and had some good timings on when and what to ask and say.

Maybe I failed to see an earlier debate about this, but I can't believe that "Haxan" was considered eligible.

It’s not just a manipulative film but a poorly made one to boot. I’d venture a guess that are tens of thousands of films where the director put his whole soul into the project. Sometimes his entire bank account. And so on. So that means nothing to me. This is a film that, because it has no quality of construction whatsoever, uses emotional manipulation to trick the viewer into believing it is a good film. As such, it left a horrible taste in my mouth and feeling in my belly after watching it. I really don’t care for that type of trickery. It’s a used car salesman-esque tactic. I can get a good cry watching YouTube animal rescue videos; a piece of film engendering that kind of reaction is no indication of quality.

I’ll just say that documentary is likely my favorite movie genre, so to see one of my 5 or so least favorite films in that genre in the top 20 bums me out. It would be like seeing crash in the top 20 of our favorite movie poll. Anyway, I am getting a distinct feeling of déjà vu as I believe this discussion has come up in previous years, so I’ll simply leave it at that.

Yea Dear Zachary didn’t offend me as much as it seems to offend most people but it was pretty bad.

Happy about the rise for Friedman’s but still not as high as it should be :folded:

And now it is the top 10!

Too bad Crumb just missed out.

As for Dear Zachary I actually I loved it when I first saw it. Manipulative certainly, and you may find it immoral or in bad taste for building suspense and a narrative on something this gruesome, but that is what is so unusual, strong and in the end makes it an incredible viewing.

Can't believe they let anyone with such a face out of the prison  - at least it was on an Alford Plea. It's a shame, but I hope he at least stopped torturing animals.

The documentary itself is a very important one, it set the blueprint for a new sub-genre: docs portraying white male criminals as victims of justice (Making A Murderer etc). And it's very interesting, from a sociological point of view, to see how easy it is to manipulate the audience (or at least a big part of them). I myself am also very gullible.

403 error - access denied for the ICM list.

A very impressive rise for Hoop Dreams, not very common that high in the ranking.

Thanks for hosting joachimt! I've only seen 43/200.

Wo-ho!

Why would even do that when he had a camera crew following him
You could say that about Robert Durst as well. I see The Jinx is at #168 just slightly ahead.

403 solved
Dinner was ready, so I quickly posted the links without thinking of making it public.

Only seen 109 out of 200.

My highest unseen are OJ, Los Angeles Plays Itself, Dying at Grace, The Salt of the Earth and Welfare.

I am however absolutely shocked that a film as respected and liked as Chronicles of Summer somehow didn't make it. Was honestly expecting to see it show up in the top 10 ... (I mean 8 official lists, top half of TSPDT, what the hell happened?)

Wow, you're right. It was #33 on my list; strikes me that the French New Wave era filmmakers - with a few obvious exceptions - didn't do as well as I would have expected/hoped.

Bah. Looking at the Top 200, I cannot imagine it wouldn't make the list. If only people would actually watch it.

Seen 40/200, disliked 10. Favorited none.

201! :D
But, yes. Quite a few entries that I thought would made the list easy are in the 201-250 range. Turksib being one of them.

123/200 here.

39/161. Always more to watch. Thanks for running this poll joachim!

My Blues films in this poll are some of my all-time favorite youtube videos that aren't frequently checked/considered for inclusion in the canon. My hope is that they will be more widely watched and will climb in the rankings in future polls. I nominated these 5 films from two different series - check them out if you're interested!

Pretty Good - A docu-series about various topics (mostly based on interesting sports stories). I voted for three different documentaries in my list:
1. Troy State 253, DeVry 141: A documentary about the highest scoring basketball game of all time. The Thin Blue Line of sports docs.
SpoilerShow

2. The Dumbest Boy Alive: A deep dive on the internet's stupidest forum thread. How many days are there in a week anyway?
SpoilerShow

3. 222-0: The story of the highest scoring football game of all time.
SpoilerShow

Bill Wurtz's History Series - These are definitely widely seen (the first has 45m views, the second has 60m), but they aren't widely checked on icm and I was the only one to vote for them in this poll.
4. History of Japan: Part documentary, part psychedelic art project, history has never been this surreal.
SpoilerShow

5. History of the Entire World, I Guess: The Godfather: Part II to the History of Japan, this video tackles the entire history of Earth.
SpoilerShow

I am however absolutely shocked that a film as respected and liked as Chronicles of Summer somehow didn't make it. Was honestly expecting to see it show up in the top 10 ... (I mean 8 official lists, top half of TSPDT, what the hell happened?)
#201 (-80, #121) Chronique d'un été (Paris 1960) (1961, Jean Rouch, Edgar Morin), 222.74 points, checks, official lists, (IMDb)

That's where I draw a line for myself. I don't check series myself let alone youtube videos.

I'll erase the line and check 'Me at the zoo'
I'd do everything for an official check.

Previous list: 39,5% seen
This list: 38,5% seen, but I might have seen Cosmos in the 80s

77/200
Voted for 76 - 23 ended up on in the top 200.

Highest # I voted for - #1 Chelovek s kino-apparatom (#13)
Highest # not voted for - #2 Hoop Dreams
Highest # unseen #9 Lektionen in Finsternis
# of my number 1 - not in the top 200
Highest favorite: none in the top 200
Highest dislike: none in the top 200

Highest movie I voted for outside of list: #202 The Most Hated Family in America
My personal highest ranked movie outside of the list: #415 Leve blant løver (#1)
Highest movie only I voted for: #415 Leve blant løver (#1)

The guessing game
Difference - List Position - My Position
01 69 68 Roger & Me
03 68 71 Toute la mémoire du monde
04 12 08 Crumb
04 27 23 Baraka
06 19 25 Nema-ye Nazdik

Biggest surprise for me is that none of Louis Theroux' documentaries got in. One from the last list even dropped out.

I was at IDFA in 1998, but I think I forgot to vote for any of those dutch documentaries this time. But didn't expect anyone else to do that either.
https://www.idfa.nl/en/collection/films?page=1&filters[edition.year]=1998 (some aren't even on imdb of those I want to vote for)

Highest unseen: #9 Lektionen in Finsternis (1992)

Could you give an overview of the drop offs from last editions list, Joachim?

Much to explore, having seen only 86 of the top 200. Thanks for the compilation and presentation.

April Challenge: Image
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!
