In the last months some users participated in mocking and scorning users for watching movies because they are official. Just a day or two ago, Ebbywebby wrote a comment, addressing those who disagree with him with "you're not watching movies for the right reasons". When I nominated Miejsce urodzenia two years ago for DtC it was so unknown that it became a left over for the next year. During the following year, the mods adopted the Lodz Film Museum's Best Polish Films list, thereby making Birthplace official. Suddenly the movie became interesting, also to Ebbywebby who watched it shortly thereafter. The official status created enough visibility for it to have enough voters in the following DtC round, and as it is a tour de force masterpiece, it easily made the cut. And while I was confident that it would make this list, I'm happily surprised that it entered so high (it still has only 75 checks). I just wished some people would stop downplaying the impact the icm's gamification aspect has on their own viewing habits, rather than projecting that suggestibility to other users.
I mostly agree with you, but I don't fully agree with your remark people watch official movies only because of the gamification. Lots of people mostly watch official movies, but don't do that because of the gamification. I mostly watch official movies, because they are in some way recommendations, because I value the meaning of official lists. Surely, there are lists out there that could be a recommendation as well, but there are so many, I simply don't know where to start, so iCM mostly dictates my watches. When you nominated Birthplace for DtC the first time, to me it was just a random movie recommended by one user. It was one of the more than thousand nominees, so I had no reason at all to watch it. Becoming official surely is a push to watch it, so I absolutely agree with you that we shouldn't underestimate the meaning of becoming an official check, but gamification is not the only reason behind that.

People who watch lots of unofficial movies often do that with a certain plan. Onderhond watches a lot of unofficial movies, because he knows he loves a certain niche, so watching those gives him a higher chance of finding movies he loves. PUNQ watches lots of unofficial checks because he watches everything with a certain goal. Others watch unofficial movies because they dive into a certain director they are interested in. Etc...... I don't think there are a lot of people who randomly watch unofficial movies. You got to have some reason to do so.
I fully agree and the way you describe using ICM is exactly the way I use it myself. Yes, it's not mainly the gamification aspect, I used bad phrasing when I wrote that, but the quality of the official lists. If those lists would suck, there would be no point on working on them, getting awards, or caring about the ranking.

I just added Planet Earth to my list for next time. Not very high, at #134, but I think it deserves to be in my list.

This week I watched three doc's that also belong in my list:

Fyre (2019 netflix doc, can't yet be added to icm lists)
Abducted in Plain Sight (#30)
Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes (#158)

Only finished watching Planet Earth a couple of days ago but will definitely make my list next time. I never used to like those kinds of documentaries but find them really fascinating now, maybe I’m just turning into an old person. My boyfriend and I started watching Blue Planet last night too and plan on getting through all of those Attenborough series.

They don't automatically tell the truth, but they are not hiding their first thoughts, but speak them out very naturally. Those are two pair of shoes.

That's a known "bug" of icm that a lot of us have experienced before. If a imdb entry gets added to icm, it'll take some days until you'll can find it in search results (even if you use the imdb id), so you can't add it, because you won't find it. Probably something to do with the not-so-good caching system of icm.

Yes, that's what you wrote in one part of that message. But you also wrote just prior that the "controversy really bewilders" you, when on that page there was exactly one person whose comment could be interpreted as being furious because of what you say. So, if that would have been the whole story, I think you would have rather written something like "I mocked that person who was furious...". Anyways, I'm getting off-topic, so that's my last post on that subject.

----

@gromit82: ah, great, it'll have chances to appear in the next poll. I now also watched Hulu's take on the story, Fyre Fraud. Also a good doc, but not as neatly built up as the netflix version.

-----

@mightysparks: I've already seen a couple of those doc's. They're a good choice to watch with a partner. I really wonder why they weren't in my list before. I now added Frozen Planet, Human Planet, Life and The Blue Planet.

I prefer the two first because at that age they actually tell the truth.
They don't automatically tell the truth, but they are not hiding their first thoughts, but speak them out very naturally. Those are two pair of shoes.
Interesting to hear people saying this, as the first is my least favorite bc it seems most of the kids are either reciting lines or saying what they think they’re supposed to.

I had no idea the OJ doc was so highly regarded. I think I conflated it in my mind with the one with Cuba Gooding.
