Btw, movies that were not in the top 104 in 2013 will show up as "new", although they might have been in the top 150 back then. I just don't have any information about anything beyond 104.

I'm hesitating about the eligibility of this. I'm not going to debate whether it's musical or not (I haven't seen it), but I don't think standup-shows belong in a movie list. We might as well start including stageshows of musicals that had a dvd release. I'm sure there are a lot of those as well.

Before posting the results I was thinking of removing it, but I don't want to decide that by myself, so opinions are more than welcome.

Maybe we should update the eligibility rules for future polls. I always just copy-paste from previous polls, but it seems they could use some critical view, because the past year people are more and more exploring the grey areas of those rules.

Woah, had expected One From the Heart to do better to be honest. I know it's a love it or hate it film, to an extent, and less seen than many Coppola's, but it also tends to have a select few who absolutely love it. Maybe that crowd just didn't vote? (or didn't count it as a musical? I did that with the Tsai "musicals" but of course One From the Heart is an all-out musical, not just a film with musical segments)

I'd never heard of this before, but taking a look at it it seems like a stand-up comedy TV special with songs? Doesn't seem like a musical to me.

I just watched the first few minutes of Make Happy. It seems like half stand-up comedy, half concert film.
If this is eligible, then would other concert films be eligible?

Scrap it, this has nothing to do with film.

The problem with allowing a thing like this is that others will try to take it even further.

It's more than just "songs"; some of the musical pieces are wordless with pure stage play, while others include narratives with multiple portrayed interacting characters, which is all interwoven into a metafictional stand-up with pure non-musical parts precluding this from being a straight concert movie.

But do you think the broadway version of The Lion King is eligible for this poll, because it was released on DVD? This is a movie forum, not a stage show forum.

A Star is Born (2018) isn't a musical either. Doesn't have a single musical number (a song just for us the viewers behalf) outside of the songs in the plot.

The genres on imdb appeared a long time before the movie even had a premiere.

If some lone person genuinely felt like he should include that and bothers to do so, then sure.

This is an aside, but the above stand-up actually includes a joke which is only possible to understand while viewing the edited cinematic end product and not while ones seated within the audience during a life show.

That just means the songs are diegetic. It should still count, otherwise movies like Cabaret aren’t musicals either.

That’s not what I meant - here he’s actually directing the joke to the audience, but for it to be grasped and work one intrinsically needs video editing. The cinematic end product and stage show performance are not the same thing at the level of the audience, with a joke materialising itself in a different medium. But anyway, that’s just one example how the show is more than just “stand-up + songs”. Some of the songs are straight-up him singing and playing piano, but others involve an out-of-nowhere overplayed track with him singing a story or dialogue between different characters.

Recorded football match on best movies list - Cinema overall is so nondefinitional that my screwed aesthetics sense would verge on yes. :ph43r: I mean, it depends on the person including it. Apart from 3rd’s porn list for <400, I don’t remember a troll submission to any of the polls since I’ve been here, and hence one can entrust individual users to behave with sincerity. Or, as you suggested earlier, set rigorous standards and enforce exclusions. But where’s the fun in that?

It's fun for the people using these lists to look for actual films. I know it's hard to draw a line where cinema ends and other artforms begin, but that vagueness is no excuse to just include whatever. It's not a matter of trolling either and ideally, these "non-film" entries should be filtered out anyway because they won't be getting enough votes, but in reality some of them do end up in these lists and they are eyesores for people actually looking through these lists. I'd be pretty pissed hoping to see a film and getting some kind of stand-up derivative. Not that I can't appreciate a good stand-up show, but not when I'm feeling like watching a film.

Borderline cases across/beyond genres or artforms that do make it in constitute between 1 to 5% of the final list: it's only ever a handful of entries that inspire eligibility discussions in results threads. If one's concerned about the purity of the list, then sure, I can see why they'd be vexing, but otherwise I'd consider their upsetting, outranking, problematic nature to be something tantalising.

The songs aren't just incidental though - they are intentionally designed to accelerate the plot and reflect how the characters feel at that point in the film. Just like most other musicals.
Cooper added that "the music really became a character in the movie. There is no lyric that's ever in any point of the movie that doesn't have exactly to do with where one of them is or hopes to be or regrets being. That was our launching pad and then it was just about discovering what songs fit in the right places."
