Year by Year Polls: 2006

#1

Post by flaiky » December 2nd, 2018, 7:39 pm

IMPORTANT! READ:
For this poll there will be a change in how to format your ballot: After you have listed your films, please then include a second full list (without numbers) of bare IMDb urls for those films, in the same order. This will take 5 more minutes than usual, but I ask for your co-operation and understanding as it will save me, your friendly volunteer host, many many hours (thanks to a clever new scoring spreadsheet). I won't be accepting your ballot unless it includes the IMDb urls (but will ping you and give you a chance to fix it). Thanks :turned:

Please note that I do not want actual IMDb lists, just the urls so that I can copy and paste them. See the first reply to this thread for an example.

Rules:

- Reply here with a list of titles you've seen from 2006, followed by a list of IMDb urls for the same films. You can vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 films.

- Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies and TV mini-series are all eligible, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

- We use IMDb dates for consistency, so a title should be listed on IMDb as 2006.

- Your ballot can be either ranked, partially ranked, or unranked. If it's not fully ranked - please state that clearly.

- You may update your ballot at any time before the poll closes (remember to also change your urls list!)

The scoring:

You may list choices in order of preference, in which case your top film will receive a number of points equal to the number of films in your list up to 20, with each next-ranked film receiving one fewer point; or in no order, in which case each film will receive the same number of points. So, for example, if you only vote for 5 ranked films, your top film will receive 5 points and your 5th-place film will receive 1 point. If you vote for 20 unranked films, each film will receive 10.5 points; if you vote for 5 unranked films, each film will receive 3 points, etc. Partially ranked ballots will use both of these systems.

Some resources:

2006 films you've rated on IMDb

2006 films sorted by most votes on IMDb

2006 films you've checked on ICM

2006 films you *haven't* checked on ICM

This poll will run for at least three weeks, probably closing on Sunday 23 December.

The next poll will be for 2018, followed by 1932.

whom shall we find
Sufficient? who shall tempt with wand’ring feet
The dark unbottom’d infinite Abyss,
And through the palpable obscure find out
His uncouth way, or spread his aerie flight,
Upborn with indefatigable wings,
Over the vast abrupt, ere he arrive
The happy Ile?

This is actually the year I started to pick up a greater interest in films, and as a result of such a sneaky, strategic position it managed to get me to see 144 films, without being any kind of standout year otherwise. It is however crowned by Brand Upon the Brain, which is in my all-time top 10. (l) (l) (l)

4. Kiraware Matsuko no isshô / Memories of Matsuko (2006, Tetsuya Nakashima)
5. Den brysomme mannen / The Bothersome Man (2006, Jens Lien)
6. This is England (2006, Shane Meadows)
7. Black Snake Moan (2006, Craig Brewer)

Obscurities
Both RED ROAD and NIGHT OF THE SUNFLOWERS are solid thrillers with intesting and unusual narratives and intriguing locations.

Predictions?

No idea really - the new years are more interesting for me from that perspective - the canon has not settled - although Lynch always does well, so if I were a betting man... and(EDIT) from ballots so far looks like Bond and CHILDREN OF MEN will place highly

Maxwell (who set up the new scoring spreadsheet) initially wrote a partially-ranked formula but it doesn't seem to work on the Google version, so I just decided to leave it....Max, if you see this, could you take a look? What do you think?

Heh. I didn't put it into the Google sheet. It'll add a little complexity to how you have to manage the data entry sheet, but it's totally doable. Can you PM me the link to the sheet you want me to work from?

Try that - if it's partially ranked, add the number of ranked entries next to all the films for that person (like in the Excel version). And obviously let me know if I broke something.

Well, it was nice while it lasted but I hate IMDb links and none of mine would make the cut anyway, but I'll be interested to read others' lists. Thanks anyway, and keep up the good work.

Right, Max is a G, so we're good to go. People are welcome to do partially ranked lists.
